October 3rd, 2020

Welcome to the 25th Annual Illinois State Perfusion Society’s Educational Conference!

(6.6 CEUs via Virtual Webinar!) What a year 2020 is shaping up to be – and what an unbelievably challenging, rewarding, and needed time it is to be a perfusionist!

The ISPS Board of Directors and I, extend our sincere thank you to all perfusionists for

your hard, and often unrecognized, work in helping thousands of patients’ lives during the global pandemic. Together, we have made an extremely large, life-saving impact that no other profession could have done. For your dedication and commitment to saving lives, we are grateful and honored to be your coworkers.

Obtaining continuing perfusion education in 2020 has presented some challenges. We

empathize with many perfusionists who rely on large conference formats for continuing education who will be unable to attend this year due to conference cancellations, delays, reimbursement cuts, travel restrictions, and many other reasons. In understanding these challenges, the ISPS Board of Directors unanimously voted to present this years’ conference in a virtual and truncated format to all perfusionists FREE OF CHARGE. This is our society’s effort coming together in support of our coworkers and profession in these uncertain times.

We hope you find this year’s webinar lectures to be extremely current and relevant to

what we are all facing at work and in our lives each and every day. The surgeons, physicians, and perfusionists presenting are all experts in their field, extensively published, and offer you the very latest in clinical and research topics. A sincere “Thank You” to all this year’s presenters for preparing your lectures and volunteering your time on a Saturday morning in support of perfusionist education.

Lastly, I would like to extend my heartfelt thank you to each of the members of the

Illinois State Perfusion Society’s Board of Directors. Your vision and hard work has not only made this educational event possible and free, but most importantly, has helped perfusionists nationwide do what they do best – be perfusionists. I am extremely proud and humbled to work with each of you in service to our profession.

We look forward to seeing you next October in-person and virtually at the Hyatt Lodge

in Oak Brook, IL for our 26th annual educational conference! Ryan Piech, President Illinois State Perfusion Society

Valluvan Jeevanandam, MD

Valluvan Jeevanandam, MD, specializes in the surgical management of heart failure, and is an expert in high-risk cardiac surgery. He has performed more than 1,100 heart transplants — including the total artificial heart — and countless cardiac surgery procedures, including transmyocardial laser revascularization, complex valve reconstruction, and minimally invasive coronary artery bypass graft surgery. Additionally, Dr. Jeevanandam has received national attention for his skill in performing bloodless cardiac surgery, particularly working with Jehova’s Witness patients, which requires the use of precise surgical techniques to minimize blood loss during the procedure — sparing the need for a blood transfusion. Dr. Jeevanandam is a pioneer in the field of mechanical circulatory assist devices. In October 2000, he was the first surgeon in the world to successfully implant the CardioVad, a revolutionary, permanent circulatory assist device that boosts heart function in patients with severe heart failure who are not candidates for transplant. He invented and was the first surgeon in the world to implant the NuPulse IABP system. He continues to be a recognized leader in the field of advanced heart failure and currently serves on the FDA Device Panel. He is a world-renowned surgeon and avid volunteer of his time. His volunteer work includes starting high risk surgical programs as well as cardiac assist programs in several countries including China and India, as well as several countries in the Middle East and South America. He travels annually to the same programs to operate on patients who would otherwise be unable to receive cardiac surgery.

In Remembrance of Bob Lehne

On August 20th, 2020 the perfusion community lost a great perfusionist and friend with the passing of Robert “Bob” Lehne. Bob worked as a perfusionist for over 40 years between Children’s Memorial Hospital (Chicago, IL) and Loyola University Medical Center (Chicago, IL). Bob’s passion and dedication to his work and commitment to excellence was unparalleled. During his extraordinary career he was instrumental in saving countless lives of his patients undergoing cardiovascular surgery, ECMO, and transplants. Bob was always willing to share his wisdom and experience by teaching and mentoring perfusion students and junior staff, thereby helping future generations effectively and compassionately treat patients.

Bob will be dearly missed by his friends, colleagues, and family, but his legacy will live on in the lives of the patients he has saved and knowledge he has instilled in the next generation of perfusionists.
