New Business: Website does not work properly, especially for updating and for reporting - very important for our treasurer and tax purposes. Alejandro Cremaschi, previous Colorado State president, can build us a new website for a low cost comparatively, This will make reporting easy and have a teacher directory. Our tax issues will be taken care of with his site as well.Discussion of having our competition registration online now - Chris said it would not be difficult to add. Patti Nyien worked with Alejandro and felt he was easy to understand and good for ISTMA. Chris proposed we hire Alejandro, Dora seconded the motion. All approved.

Other discussion: Jane Bruggeman; wants to know if studio price survey’s are OK if they are anonymous. Lynette Zelis mentioned that this is a question for MTNA and Gary Ingle is our FTC representative. Janice Razaq said we should avoid this entirely.

Officers Reports:

President ReportPresident - Lynette Zelis

ISMTA President ReportTo all ISMTA board members, committee chairs, local presidents, our Executive Assistant Justin Hedrick and his assistant Sarah Schwartz - thank you for all of your hard work and dedication to ISMTA and MTNA. I could not do this job without your complete

cooperation.

In September, I went to the yearly MTNA leadership summit in Cincinnati, OH. This is always an interesting time to meet with all of the state presidents and learn the ins and outs of MTNA from its leadership to its finances.

Updates for ISMTA - new goals and results from last years work:1. Talks with Superintendent and assistant superintendent of schools have not been

effective. For one reason or another, the State of IL doesn’t want to start a program where students can get high school credit for music lessons with a certified teacher.

2. Create more collegiate chapters in IL - we are now having a poster session at this conference for the collegiate chapters and other activities. Hoping this will drum up interest and inspire new membership. .

3. Membership is holding steady - we have talked about having brochures available for local music stores and IL colleges to have around to help raise awareness of ISMTA. We need to be relevant to all of the generations that are represented in our membership. Previous brochures are outdated and not attention getting. I want to say Thank you to Susan Twitty for all of her years of service to ISMTA. Our new membership chair is Yeeseon Kwon. I know she will do a wonderful job!

4. Ramp up interest in certification &- interest more collegiate members, who get ½ off. There have been more teachers certified this year! These members will be mentioned in the general board meeting for the state. Thank you to Susan Lipnick for all of her efforts!

5. We have a wellness chair, Dora Diephouse - now we need to get wellness articles on the website and offer some wellness programs at our conferences.

6. Our new website has a “Find a teacher” link that prospective students could use to find teachers by Zip code. Do our teachers know about this> We need to get more of our membership to take advantage of this resource.

7. Honor longterm members - 50+ years - at our annual banquet. This year we will be honoring Mary Maddox from the Kankakee Valley MTA.

Page 7: Illinois State Music Teachers Association | Affiliated ...€¦  · Web viewFri., May 19, 11 a.m. – Lunch and Annual Business Meeting; Ruby Tuesday restaurant, Fairview Heights,

8. Composer Commissioning program is up and running, thanks to Amy Jo Sawyer, our state chair. Please visit our website for more information - applications are due Nov. 30th.

9. We have two new MTNA fellows from ISMTA - Patti Nyien & Bruce Berr. Patti’s $1000 has already been raised!

10. Please remember to attend the general board meeting at 10 AM today and the winners recital on Sat. night at 5:30 PM.

11. Minnesota has a wonderful program for music students with disabilities. I have been in contact with Beth Bauer from Wheaton College about setting up a similar program in ISMTA to coincide with our AIM program. The program is call Music Bridges - information is available on the MN MTA website.

At the national conference, we have been asked to split a table (and cost) with Michigan. If you are going to the banquet, please let me know.

We had our first online meeting via “Go to Meeting” in April of this year. We were able to cut costs for ISMTA and for the members traveling a great distance to Champaign.

Respectfully submitted,Lynette Zelis

Chair Reports

ISMTA Board Report for November 2016 meeting:From Susan Lipnick, NCTM, ISMTA Certification Chair

Certification Numbers:

Since the current fiscal year started on July 1, 2016, two ISMTA members have become Certified through the Administrative Verification process. Four teachers are in the process of becoming Certified: One, an ISMTA member, is using the Administrative Verification process; three are working their way through the Teacher Profile Projects process. Of these three, one is an ISMTA member and one is a member of a collegiate MTA chapter in Illinois. The third teacher has no affiliation with ISMTA.

Last year (2015-2016), five ISMTA members became Certified, one through the old examination option (no longer available) and the rest through the Administrative Verification process. Additionally, an ISMTA member who had let the Certification designation lapse for many years had it reinstated.

Page 8: Illinois State Music Teachers Association | Affiliated ...€¦  · Web viewFri., May 19, 11 a.m. – Lunch and Annual Business Meeting; Ruby Tuesday restaurant, Fairview Heights,

Getting the Word Out:I thank all of the local Certification chairs/contacts who last year encouraged their local Chapter members who are collegiate or university music faculty members to become Certified through the Administrative Verification process. This year, I am encouraging local MTA chapters to hold presentations on Certification on both processes (Administrative Verification and Teacher Profile Projects). I have put together a program for local chapter Certification chairs/contacts to share with their chapters; one local Certification chair has taken me up on this offer so far. I am also available to give Skype presentations on Certification, which I have done with one chapter so far this year. I will also present this program in person later this year to my local MTA chapter.

Foundation ChairISMTA Foundation ReportNovember 4, 2016Debi Inch, Chair

We had 2 baskets of music teacher gifts which were raffled at the state conference November, 2015. Lynd Corley’s family made a donation of $1,000 to support the funds for her foundation fellow. Donations from local associations and individuals completed our total of $2035.00 which was phenomenal for one state conference.

I send out a formal thank you letter each quarter to all the donors to the foundation. The National Foundation chair, Jenny Thomason has begun emailing the donors in a spreadsheet with names and addresses so we can send thank yous in a mail merge form that makes it a reasonable process.

I have been working with our President, Lynette Zelis, to add a fresh approach to the conference. The ISMTA hat and T shirt from the 2015 conference were a positive approach and appreciated by all the members attending the conference. This year we have a foundation table with a very professional and reusable banner to represent the foundation.

Bruce Berr and Patti Nyien are our 2017 foundation fellows. We will have all checks made out to ISMTA so that we can direct the funds exactly how we want them directed. It is a bit more work for our treasurer to do it this way, but we will avoid the huge troubles we had last fall getting the funds directed for our fellows.

The giving for the first through 3rd quarters for Illinois was $3007.00. Considering we only had one fellow, we contributed $2007.00 to the foundation before our fourth quarter which will be our largest due to the conference fund raising.

The following chart shows the grants, awards, and rebates we have received from National according to their records for 2015 and 2016:

Group Piano Chair

This year's Group Piano conference contribution will consist of a panel discussion.  Included are participants who, together, have experience in just about every area of group piano. I have prepared several topics of discussion for the panelists and will allow time at the end for questions.

Here is the title and description:

"Teaching the Class, Teaching the Individual: A Discussion of Issues, Techniques, and Ideas Pertaining to Teaching Group Piano."

Obviously the term "Group Piano" is broad, covering many specialties: Keyboard Skills for Music Majors, Keyboard Skills for Piano Majors, College Class Piano for Non-Music Majors (sometimes known as Leisure Piano), Community Class Piano aimed at specific age-levels (Adult, Teenage, or Young Child), Group Piano Lessons as supplement to Private Piano Study, Piano Ensembles Classes, etc. While the categories are abundant, teaching strategies related to all categories are similar.  What goes into making a piano class exciting, interesting, and engaging?  How do you consider pace and presentation when you are teaching a variety of students? How do you insure the education of the individual while teaching the whole? Our panel of seasoned group piano teachers will include Bruce Berr, Christopher Goldston, Jennifer Merry, and Susan Osborn.  Together, they represent a broad spectrum of experience and will discuss topics with general, specific and unique suggestions to enlighten every teacher of group piano.

Independent Music Teachers Forum Chairman report for board meeting on November 4th, 2016

Last Spring, on Lynette's request, I checked into what it would take to open a Google AdWord account for ISMTA to promote our teachers in our organization. I opened a Google AdWord account for my own business, Halvorson Music Studio, to experiment with it before trying it in a bigger venue. It seemed easy to do, although I don't receive many student information requests, it does give me a presence on the internet. I have received a few student requests from internet

Page 15: Illinois State Music Teachers Association | Affiliated ...€¦  · Web viewFri., May 19, 11 a.m. – Lunch and Annual Business Meeting; Ruby Tuesday restaurant, Fairview Heights,

places, but I have a lot of different places now with information for my piano studio. I advised Lynette against opening a Google AdWord for the ISMTA chapter of MTNA because I experienced other internet companies clicking on the Google AdWord and creating their own ad about my company with false information. I spent a lot of time contacting each of these companies and asking them to take the information down. Then, I contacted Google and they gave me instructions of how to mark the companies that I didn't authorize to create information so they could contact them. Within a day, those companies had dropped their ads, but it was a ton of work and I constantly need to check on it to make certain they aren't popping up again. Long story, short, the clicks I received were more from these companies than from actual potential students.

I did ask Deborah Smith of SIUE to present a program for the Independent Music Teachers Forum. I also asked Joseph Welch if he would present a program. I told Karen Ball that if Deborah Smith didn't present a program that I wanted the program that Joseph Welch is presenting to be the Independent Music Teachers Forum program.

Sincerely,LeAnn Halvorson, NCTMIndependent Music Teachers Forum Chairman ISMTA

AIM VOICE REPORTFall 2016

New voice syllabus is taking its final shape and is currently on various spreadsheets. The challenge we experienced was due to expanding the syllabus by 2 levels. The intention of this syllabus will help teachers and students to achieve better outcomes in their school choir programs, ILMEA auditions, Solo and Ensemble, and get comfortable with the specifics of vocal music.

The syllabus will soon be ready to be formatted and sent to peer review. It should be in print some time towards the end of December, 2016.

I invite any of the colleagues to direct any questions they might have to me. I would be happy to offer further information and will send e-mail when the syllabus is done.

Concerns: As our faithful membership ages, we are maintaining fewer membership

numbers. We have had new members in the past few years, but we are not gaining

on numbers for our organization. How do attract more members? Once we get new

members, how do we keep them? How do we get more members to participate in

meetings and activities provided by the group? This Fall there were three fantastic

programs with fewer than 10 members in attendance. Food is always an attraction

and we get more members at meetings with a meal involved, but that isn't always a

possibility at every location.

Northwest SuburbanNORTHWEST SUBURBAN MUSIC TEACHERS ASSOCIATION

ISMTA BOARD MEETING REPORT, NOVEMBER 2016

The Northwest Suburban chapter meets on the 3rd Monday of the month at the Rolling Meadows Library. As of October 17 we had 122 members.

Our first two meetings this year featured programs by George Radoslavjevic, titled “Wind and Water: Debussy and Motion,” and by Svetlana Belsky, who discussed the repertoire for our awards competition on April 29, 2017. On November 28 four of our own members, Jennifer Cohen, Vonnie Mrozinski, Helen Grosshans and Bev Taylor will present “Studio Crawl 2.0.” In January Dr. Bruce Berr will design a presentation on topics requested by the membership. The February 20 program will be given by Christopher Goldston and is titled “Yes, You CAN Teach Composition.” On March 20 several of our members will present an Independent Music Teachers program on “The 21st Century Piano Teacher.” Our final speaker for the year will be Dr. Mary Beth Molenaar discussing “Girl Scout Tricks – What Music Teachers can Learn about Retention from Scouting” on April 17.

We are very excited this year to sponsor a workshop with Peter Mack titled “Lessons with Peter Mack” which will feature a Lecture/Recital on Sunday, March 5, 2017, and continue on Monday, March 6. We want to encourage members from other ISMTA chapters to attend, and have brought brochures for publicity to this conference.

Our chapter has already held several events this fall. Our 23rd Festival of Pianos took place at Northbrook Court on September 25 and included over 300 participants playing duets on multiple grand pianos. We held both classical and pop/jazz recitals on October 16, and will hold recitals again in April. Our Sonata-Sonatina Festival will be Sunday, November 6, and a Gold Medal recital will follow on November 13. AIM exams will take place at Harper College on November 13, January 29, March 12, and April 23.

An informational coffee for AIM was held early in October. We will enjoy a holiday party in December and will finish the year with a luncheon in May. Pictures from many of these events will be posted on our website and on our Facebook page.

SALT CREEK

MTNA Chapter of the Year 2011

Salt Creek Association meets on the third Thursday of each month, excepting December.

We are pleased to welcome 6 new members this year giving us a membership of 39 with 2 honorary members, 8 Nationally Certified teachers and 3 Foundation Fellows. We are honored to have Janet Hickey chosen as 2016 Teacher of the Year. Our annual Fall Festival on October 16, 2016 had a registration of 75 students of all age groups performing pieces about “Animal Themes.” A new web page format is up and running; committee chairs have successfully made necessary adjustments in some difficult situations so all upcoming events are now in place. We completed minor adjustments to the wording of our Constitution.

The Glorious Grands Board continues planning for Monster Concert III next year. Early in 2017 registration and parts assignment should begin. The event will replace the annual Fall Festival next year.

We are beginning discussion about the possibility of an all Chopin Recital in collaboration with the Chopin Foundation of Chicago as they prepare to dedicate a new statue of Chopin (like the one in Warsaw) in the Millennium Park area of downtown Chicago.
