A Note On The Illinois Digital Archives ( )http://eli.sls.lib.il.us/ida The Illinois Digital Archives (IDA) is a repository for digital images from the Illinois State Library’s collection as well as those of other libraries and cultural institutions in Illinois which have generated an Archival Library of digital records totaling well over 3,000 items as of February, 2003. This Archive is comprised of a broad spectrum of Illinois-related materials, with a strong emphasis on local, regional, and state history. Illinois State University has built an archive of records of women from the Bloomington-Normal region who served in World War I, while Skokie Public Library has built an impressive array of records related to the famous Nazi March in Skokie. You will find electronic-based images of historical maps of Aurora and Kane County, mounted by the Aurora Public Library, and post card images of Illinois’ historical past in other sites. The Illinois State Library’s Digital Imaging Program has contributed close to 500 items, both image and full-text, to the Archive. Established in 1839 as the library of government in Illinois, the State Library is one of the oldest libraries in the State with strong collections in federal publications, Illinois State documents, and “things Illinois.” The State Library’s records in the Illinois Digital Archives reflect these collections. Since the records of each institution in IDA are arranged in alphabetical order by title, it was perceived that an index needed to be created which clustered the State Library’s records in IDA by subject, so librarians and researchers could grasp the extent and number of available records on a given topic. Hence, this subject-oriented index. Index entries are in an abbreviated, bibliographic format, so that a researcher can tell at a glance what the significance of a precise record is – when it was issued, who issued it, what the content is, and where is it linked in IDA. Major focus of the Illinois State Library digital records has been World War II (in especial, the large collection of war posters at the Illinois State Library), and Illinois publications that have been significant to Illinois history and government. Abraham Lincoln is said to be the “most written-about man” after Christ and William Shakespeare, and so has merited his own section. In time, each of these sections will grow, as will the Archives in its entirety grow. What this growth means in the larger picture is that Libraries are now, not only found in monumental buildings or private homes, but are also a very real dimension in the dynamic, electronic global arena of the Internet.
