Words are a very poor substi-tute for feelings. Having justexperienced what has to be

one of the most exhilarating Masonic

weekends in my career, I am strugglingto describe my emotions and give thanksto those who made the weekend special.

On Friday evening, the Masonic FamilyHealth Foundation hosted a dinner forsome of those who would take part in thenext days festivities, as the Cornerstonefor the Center for Advanced Care at Ad-

vocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center,Chicago was symbolically laid. A cer-emony, presided over jointly by BrotherMillard V. Driskell, Most WorshipfulGrand Master of the Most WorshipfulPrince Hall Grand Lodge, Free and Ac-cepted Masons of the State of Illinois andits Jurisdiction and myself, Brother BarryD. Weer, Most Worshipful Grand Masterof the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge,Ancient Free and Accepted Masons ofthe State of Illinois was held. Immedi-ately prior to the meal, the two GrandLodge teams had a walkthrough of theCornerstone Ritual which was woventogether with alternating participation ofboth sets of Grand Lodge Officers.

About five hundred attendees includingMasons from both Grand Lodges alongwith their ladies or friends and variousrepresentatives and supporters of theAdvocate Illinois Masonic MedicalCenter administration were presentas the sun finally shown over Chicagoaer a week of damp, cool and drizzlyweather. God was smiling on this event.

e Medinah Highlanders Drums andBagpipes smartly stepped off while a suc-cession consisting of joint Commanderycontingents moved into position to form

a guard of honor through which a pro-cession of the combined Grand Lodgeofficers passed, until the arrival of eachGrand Master which brought forth acommand for an arch of steel by crossedswords. e procession moved into ahuge tent where at one end three hun-dred fiy chairs awaited those who couldassemble on the site of the ceremony, inaddition, about two hundred additionalmembers and guests witnessed the cere-mony on a live streamed video feed in anauditorium inside the Hospital proper.

With dignity and solemnity, the age oldceremony unfolded and the cornerstonewas symbolically laid, tested and foundto be well formed and trusty, truly laidand proved by the implements of Ma-sonry. e stone was then consecratedwith corn, wine and oil, and the cer-emony concluded with prayers includingan appeal to the throne of grace for theprotection and safety of the workmenlaboring at the site.

    e Masonic Family Health Foundation,

which since its creation, has provided inexcess of thirty million dollars in chari-table support for healthcare, communityand Masonic endeavors, then conductedtheir annual meeting. It was announcedthat from a portion of the Foundationsgrants for this year, our Grand LodgesIllinois Masonic Student Assistance As-sociation received a generous award and

a special grant was awarded as an answerto the appeal for assistance for thoseMaster Masons, their families, and wid-ows who suffered devastating damage in

last Novembers series of tornados.A unique aspect of the Foundation andHospitals programs is the MasonicAssistance Program (MAP). e MAPprovides medical care for Masons whoneed but cannot afford medical services. Our own Illinois Masonic Outreach Ser-

vices Program has referred a number ofbrethren from around the state for theseservices and the number of brethrenhelped is expanded by referrals receiveddirectly from Lodges and concernedMasons in the Chicagoland area. eFoundations funds offset the clinicaland/or co-pay portions of outpatientand physician care, while any in-househospital services are covered throughAdvocate Hospitals charitable outreach.is superb partnership has maintainedand enhanced the legacy of care andcompassion that epitomizes the heritageof the Illinois Masonic Hospital. enew Center for Advanced Care, underconstruction, will add a needed expan-sion to critical diagnostic and outpatient

care, allow for the anticipation of changesin healthcare delivery and position thehospital to continue the provision of thefinest medical services to Masons, thecommunity and beyond, to the City andState. e synergies of these programsare exciting and extremely beneficial.

    EvaluateA Pilot Test to

    the Intender Program

    F

reemasonrys primary purpose is to accept good menas members and help them to become better men byexposing them to Masonrys moral philosophy. is is

done by assisting candidates to learn and apply that philosophyon an individual or group basis, or both. e key to achievingthis purpose is to ensure men learn the specifics of our moralsand values through a mentor-guided or self-directed educa-tional process.

en we must ensure they remain actively involved with moreseasoned Masons in the lodge and elsewhere, especially byparticipating in lodge meetings and degrees. Minimally, thereneeds to be a sufficient length of time in order for the candi-dates new Masonic-based thoughts and actions to take holdand become enduring habits.

What Were DoingOur Grand Lodges Intender Program is designed to providethe guidelines and resources to accomplish this behavioralimprovement. e brothers at my lodge are conducting a pilottest to determine the most effective way to use this Program inorder to achieve our candidate education goals. We are explor-ing a combination of one-on-one learning opportunities withan assigned Intender as well as group events, bringing togetherall candidates, their Intenders, and a few lodge brethren.

We currently have nine apprentices, and shortly a tenth, so wehave a good supply with which to work. Our first initiative wasto conduct a two-hour Intender training program using the

Grand Lodge training materials, both video and print items. We next made sure the one-on-one aspect was being carriedout, including work on the catechism. Last month we sched-uled our first group session and, interestingly, it included a fewapprentices and Intenders from other lodges. Unfortunately, two of Wilmettes candidates were working that evening.

Our agenda was to provide a guided discussion that coveredreasons for wanting to be a Mason, the lodges expectations

of candidates, and a review of (and answers to) the questionsat the end of their Guidebooks. We provided time to answertheir general questions about Masonry plus opportunities for

comments and opinions from the Intenders and other Masonspresent. One of the purposes of the group aspect is to geteveryone acquainted and to begin building a base of friend-ships, as well as starting their habit of coming to the Temple. All attendees believed the session was worthwhile and wantedto know when the next one was scheduled. As the IntenderCoordinator, I followed this up with calls and emails to Intend-ers and candidates to assess how the continuing one-on-oneswere progressing, and assessing how soon they would be readyfor their catechism exam.

    What We Hope to Achieve

Decreasing the number of newer Masons driing away from

lodge involvement or even leaving the Fraternity during theirfirst few years.

Creating Masons who are more knowledgeable about ourFraternity, its history, philosophy, and symbolism and alsobuilding greater commitment to the lodge and its activities.

Building fraternal bridges between new and longer-termedMasons; between the young and the more senior members.

A Continuing Process of Evaluation and Adjustment

We recognize were in an all too human and voluntary environ-ment. e process of making good, committed Masons isnt

easy, but using the above-mentioned educational materialsand procedures, we have a much better likelihood of success.;that is to say, better than just leaving it to chance, as we have alldone in the past. Continuing evaluation of the different com-ponents and making appropriate adjustments should increasethose chances of success. Finally, ongoing results and problemswill be fed back to the Committee on Masonic Education.

In addition, anyone wishing to refer aneedy brother or widow for assistance may do so by contacting

the IMOS program or utilizing the same website. ere is alsothe opportunity for a lodge to help out a member in need byapplying for a matching grant aer the lodge has given a dona-tion to the brother or widow or by requesting dues assistance.Information regarding the matching grant or dues assistanceprogram can be accessed through the website or by calling theIMOS program.

Asking for help is never a small task. Oen times, pride cripplesa persons willingness to ask for help. e necessity of admit-ting one needs help causes that person to become vulnerableand exposed emotionally. e person deals with, first, the actof admitting the need, second, the fear of how the request will

be perceived by others and third, the fear of being rejected orridiculed. Realizing the necessity of asking for help is somethingthat the majority of us will experience at one point or anotherin our lives. Asking for help exemplifies a persons courage, strength and desire for change. Taking the opportunity and hav-ing the ability to extend an offer of assistance to a person is anhonorable and cherished gi. No one should ever find opportu-nity to judge another based on what is merely seen or presumedbecause more than likely there is more to that persons storythen will ever be known.

IMOS staff members are pleased to be able to offer help tothose in need throughout the Fraternity. ey recognizes thateach person has value and is worthy of respect. erefore, theinformation provided to IMOS staff regarding an individualscircumstance and financial need is kept in strict confidence. It isnot as a matter of secrecy that this is done, but out of a desire toprotect and further help the person in need. In addition, there

are legal guidelines that must be followed by any agency thatoffers assistance with regards to releasing a persons personalinformation. e law clearly states that a persons personalinformation should be protected at all times. e few exceptionswould be when authorization from that individual is given torelease information (such as to bill collectors), in the case of acourt order, and in the case of an extreme nature (such as crimi-nal activity or abuse). IMOS staff appreciates the understandingof the lodge membership regarding the need for such privacyprotection.

It is the goal of IMOS to provide assistance to our Masonicmembership whenever we are made aware of a need. Lodge

officers can have a positive impact on the IMOS program andthe assistance we provide by, making members aware of theprogram, making referrals as needed for needy members andby respecting the position of the IMOS staff and their desire torespect each and every person that contacts them. e endow-ment program was created to optimize the assistance providedto the Masonic membership and the IMOS program is oneavenue by which this can be accomplished. e future of IMOSis bright and we are excited about the opportunity to provide forour Masonic brothers and their wives or widows. We are here toassist whenever we can. ank you for your continued supportof this wonderful program. You, the Masonic membership of Il-

linois, can be proud that you are contributing to the bettermentof your fellow brothers and their families.

    Other Topics

Over the past several months I have hadthe pleasure to travel the state of Illinoisand meet many of our loyal donors who

support our charities. eir devotion toour great fraternity and our charitablemission is very inspiring. I thank all ofyou who truly believe in our passion tohelp our brothers, our surviving spousesand our children.

When I travelled to our Illinois MasonicChildrens Homes in Murphysboroin January and La Grange in March, Itoured the facilities and witnessed first-hand, the care and compassion that thesechildren receive. I asked Jill Morrison,

the administrator if there was a WishListof items used on a daily basis that Icould print in this newsletter article. Shewas happy to oblige. e items that arelisted in the box at the le, are items thatare necessary staples for the children. If you would like make a donation, youcan send a check made payable to the

Illinois MasonicCharities Fund, 2866Via Verde Street,Springfield, Illinois

62703 and we will besure to see that Jillreceives the funds forthe children.

ank you very much for yourconsideration!

Make a list of who you would like toreceive your possessions, whether it befamily members, your church, your fa-

vorite charities and other special peoplein your life.

Consider including a Revocable LivingTrust in your will. It might help to avoidlengthy courtroom battles and excessiveinheritance taxes.

If you already have a will, if you haventhad it updated in the past five years, take a look at it to see if anything needsupdating. Ill bet that it does.

If you would like to include our IllinoisMasonic Charities in your will, the fol-

    lowing language can be used:

I give to the Illinois Masonic CharitiesFund, an Illinois not for profit corpora-tion, 2866 Via Verde Street, Springfield,Illinois 62703, ____________Dollars or___________% of my estate, for use asdetermined by its board of directors.

I hereby bequeath everything that I

own to the United States Government.

I got your attention didnt I? Withouta will in place, your possessions could

end up belonging to the government. Ifyou feel as I do, then you believe that thegovernment has already taken more thanits fair share over the years through taxes, user fees, hidden taxes and more taxes.

Studies indicate that over 50% of peopledie without a will or valid will! inkabout that for a moment. We take bettercare of our cars and lawn mowers thanwe do with our most important assets. One thing is certain, besides death andtaxes. If we fail to produce a valid will, someone other than who we mightchoose, is going to get the real estate,

jewelry, furniture, autos, savingsaccounts and the coffee maker!

Here are a few things to consider in thevery near future:

Get in contact with an attorney whospecializes in making out a will.

    AA Batteries

    Scientific Calculators

    1 and 2 inch binders

    Mechanical Pencils

    Pocket Folders

    children)
