A state level exercise (SLE) in February allowed many of us to interact with representatives from the other Mobile Support Teams. Our team meeting in March provided us the chance to review in detail both lessons learned and best practices from the November tornado deployments and the State Level Exercise. It is easy to emphasize the successful aspects but we chose instead to spend

time seeking areas we can further improve, especially any recurring issues. A "list" has been developed and position leads will be tasked with providing recommendations for improvement. In April we will seek input from the National (NIMO) Team for the fourth consecutive year. Several of our peer teams from other states will join us at this training in
Collinsville. We have our next team meeting in May in Bloomington and in June we will have team involvement at the "Capstone 14" exercise in Springfield. With your continued dedication to team development we will enhance our capabilities to serve.

A Word from your TNSP
A “shout” to our past team-mate, IL State Qualification Committee Chair & Barbeque Master William Farnum! During the 28 years that Bill spent at IFSI, he influenced the instruction in many programs from basic firefighter through fire officer and the incident management class series. Bill worked diligently to draft a document that became the basis for the Illinois Terrorism Task Force's policy guidance on qualifications for Illinois IMT. He also served as the first Chair of the State Qualifications Committee to verify taskbook completion and Illinois IMT member qualifications. Bills love of the logistics system was central to his ICS training in Illinois but he did also work in planning and in general staff functions on deployments. Bill deployed to the flooding in Illinois in 2011 and deployed with Illinois IMT members to Long Island efforts in the Hurricane Sandy relief. Past team co-chair Tom Lovejoy said it best “One could call Bill energetic, committed, and always willing to serve. I like to say that whenever there is trouble, Bill Farnum is there!”

National Committee Reports
On February 26‐27, Illinois IMT was involved as key players in an exercise that was created to test managers from team leader up through the ranks. IMT members had opportunities to work with other Mobile Support Teams as well as state groups who manage large‐scale events. Two 12 hour shifts were put in by all the involved organizations. We had wonderful occasions to work well with folks who have heard of us, but never worked with us. This exercise will continue to give us another foundation to build upon.

Joe Jones reports the National Qualifications Committee has completed its work on the general guide. A copy is on the AHIMTA web site for members to view. Work continues on task books. Dan Ellis and Joe are members of the NFPA committee on Mass Evacuation, Sheltering and Re‐entry. We attended a committee meeting in San Antonio in February. The committee has completed seven drafts to date and is working towards a complete document. The NFPA has approved the NFPA 1616 as the standard number.

Bob Elliott reports: Les and I presented an
IMT update to the IL Association of Chiefs
of Police Executive Board Meeting in
Springfield. More than 70 Police Chiefs
from around the state were informed of
our team capabilities and availability.
Our photo is with Executive Director John
Kennedy.
On Thursday, March 27, 2014, Major General Eyal Eizenberg,
Commander of the Israel Home Front Command, and his staff met to
exchange information with representatives from the Illinois National
Guard, IEMA, Cook County Homeland Security and Emergency
Management, Illinois Task Force 1, ILEAS, MABAS, IL‐IMT and others. In
addition to the roundtable meeting, the group conducted a tour of
several in‐progress, hands‐on training activities that were taking place on
the site. Rich Mikel represented the men and women of the IL‐IMT for
the three hour event which was held at the Northern Illinois Public
Safety Training Academy (NIPSTA) in Glenview. According to Rich, “the
group had a very beneficial meeting at which much was learned by both
Illinois personnel and Israeli delegation as well. One common
denominator identified is the need for interoperable communications
between civilian response forces and Military support units”. In a very
interesting side note, Israeli elected political leaders are required to train
with the response forces and are actually graded on their performance
and interaction with the response teams. The elected officials often use
these evaluations in their re‐election campaigns, assuming of course
they receive good scores.
Mike Moos reports: The exhibiting at the ILEAS
conference was great. Chief Donald Volk of the
Washington Police Department dropped by to
give his regards and indicated Washington is well
on its way of recovering from the tornado that hit
last November.

The article discusses our mission and contributions to the communities of Gifford and Washington during the November 2013 Tornado outbreak. Keep a eye out for the Spring 2014 issue of Command, the Illinois Association of Police Chiefs (IACP) magazine, for a similar feature article on IL‐IMT. The latest edition (April 2014) of the USFA Newsletter All Hazard Herald profiles IL‐IMT!
The Medical Unit Leader Class was held January 29‐31 at IFSI. Terrence O’Connor, MEDL MNICS Team “B” (Minnesota) a nationally carded Medical Unit Leader was the instructor.
