Police and members of the Provincial Liquor Board confi scated more than 200 crates of beer and arrested the owner of an illegal shebeen during a raid at Senakwe village in Matipane last Thursday.
Jeanet Malatji (56) who owns a liquor outlet in Botlokwa in the Capricorn District allegedly used a license for another business to operate a shebeen from her home.
Bolobedu police spokesperson, Constable Rebotile Shai said police received a tip-off and arrested the suspect for illegally trading liquor.
Constable Shai said the illegal shebeen was closed and the suspect was released after paying an admission of guilt fi ne of R 1500.
One arrested after crimespree in Taganashoek
Local police arrested a 21-year-old suspect in connection attacks on a farm in the Taganashoek area in Letsitele on Satuday afternoon.
According to provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi the eigt-man started their reign of terror around midday when they attacked and raped a 32-year-old woman, before helping themselves to two rifl es, a pistol and R 300 in cash.
‘Their next stop was at another house just a few metres away. In this incident the three members of the gang allegedly raped a 59-year-old Zimbabwean woman,’ said Mulaudzi.
The suspects proceeded to another house where they only managed to steal electrical appliances including DVDs, before disappearing into the bush on foot.
According to Mulaudzi the suspects dropped some of the stolen items and money while they were on the run.
The police made the breakthrough in the case after they launched a manhunt for the eight suspects.
They arrested the 21-year-old suspect on Monday afternoon.During his arrest the suspect was found in possession of some of the
stolen items.The suspect was due to appear in the Tzaneen Magistrate’s Court at the
time of going to press on Tuesday on charges of house breaking, possession of a fi rearm and ammunition as well as rape.
Police are still looking for the remaining seven suspects and community members are urged to inform the police if they see people selling suspected stolen appliances.

Two people were found in possession of property that they could not account for and were subsequently arrested and charged with possession of suspected stolen property. Three people were charged with malicious
damage to property. One person was arrested and charged with pointing someone out as a witch, two people were arrested for being in possession of dagga and one person was arrested for being in possession of a dangerous weapon.

for various criminal offences over the past week. Maake police spokesperson, Constable Mpho Seroto said four suspects were arrested for malicious damage to property, one for shoplifting and fi ve for assault common.
Eight people were arrested for contravening the Road traffi c Act, two for rape, one was arrested for robbery, two for possession of dagga and two for housebreaking.
Police in Tzaneen are appealing community to help in the fi ght against crime particularly housebreaking and theft. Tzaneen police spokesperson, Constable Glenda Maimele can assist the police solve crime by reporting suspicious looking people in their area.
The community can call the Tzaneen Police Station Community Service Centre at 015 306 2121 or alternatively 015 306 2133.

The Department of Higher Education and Training urges students, parents and guardians to ensure that the institutions they enrol with are legally registered.
This as the department is inundated with complaints from students who have fallen prey to bogus, illegal or unregistered private Further Education and Training (FET) colleges.
The department encouraged people to call the toll-free number, 0800 87 2222, to make sure the institution is recognised and registered.
Students can check for themselves the registration status of any private FET college by logging on to: www.dhet.gov.za.
Any private college that offers
occupational and trades qualifi cations must provide proof of accreditation by the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO) or a relevant body.
The director of the Independent Institute of Education (IIE), Dr Felicity Coughlan says before signing up prospective students should ask the institution to show their certifi cate of registration with the Department of Higher Education. It should detail the campus, provider and the qualifi cations offered.
“Students eager to sign up in the current climate where spaces at tertiary institutions are scarce may be tempted to forego this little bit of additional hassle. But failing to make the effort makes you enormously
vulnerable to some unscrupulous people exploiting students’ diffi cult situation, for fraudulent and selfi sh fi nancial gain ,” says Coughlan
The police in Limpopo have warned that anyone found to be running an unregistered institution will face the full might of the law.
Provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant Fannie Masemola said the police in conjunction with the Department of Education offi cials would conduct investigations and bring the perpetrators to book.
Those found guilty of running unregistered institutions could face up to 10 years in prison or a fi ne of R250 000, or face both.

Greater Letaba Municipal offi cials with some of the top matric learners.
The Greater Letaba Municipality hosted an educational breakfast session for top matriculants at Ga-Kgapane Community Hall last Thursday.
The purpose of the event was to acknowledge and honour top achievers in the 2013 matric examination in the Greater Letaba area. Greater Letaba obtained 69.6 % pass rate in 2013 matric results which is 9.8% improvements from 2012 results.
Speaking during the event, The mayor of Greater Letaba Municipality, City Modjadji applauded learners, their teachers and circuit managers for achieving great results and for putting the area on the map.
Modjadji said with the help of the sponsors the municipality has made available more than 200 study bursaries this year.
He said the municipality will organize an award ceremony for all top performers in which they will receive gifts for their efforts.
He appealed to learners furthering their studies at various learning institutions not to forget where they come from.
Mopani District senior manager of the Department of Education, Dr Lydia Mafenya urged parents to continue supporting their children when they are studying at tertiary institutions.
He appealed to matriculants to plough back to their communities after completing their studies.
The best performing schools in Greater Letaba are Blue Mountain and Mawa which obtained 100% pass rate.
The top learner in the Greater Letaba area is Cedrick Lebeya (19) from Realedisha High School in Ditshosing village in Mamaila Circuit.
Lebeya got seven distinctions, including 100% in Physical Science. Lebeya, who has registered to study medicine at the University of Cape Town said he took advantage of extra lessons offered after school, evenings, weekend and school holidays.
“Nothing is impossible if you are determined to succeed,” said Lebeya who was raised by a single parent.
The under performing schools in Greater Letaba in terms of 2013 matric results are Matome Modika and RSB Motsinoni, both school in Rakwadu Circuit registered 39.3% and 26.5 % respectively. Of the 61 learners who wrote matric examination at Matome Modika, 24 passed whilst 37 failed. Five qualifi ed to study for bachelor’s degree, four qualifi ed for national diploma whilst 15 met requirements for higher certifi cate..
Of the total 49 learners who sat for examination in 2013, 13 passed whilst 36 failed. Only three qualifi ed to study for bachelor’s degree, another three qualifi ed for national diploma whilst seven met requirements for higher certifi cate.
The worst performing school is Matarapane in Molototsi which only managed 17% pass rate.

A WELL-KNOWN motor dealership in Modjadjiskloof, Trophy Toyota, made a generous donation towards CHoiCe Trust last Monday.
CHoiCe Trust received a donation of R7,200 from the dealership. This amount was raised by an energetic team of Trophy Toyota cyclists who took part in the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge in November last year.
The 14 cyclists in the Trophy team gathered private sponsors who donated money per kilometre cycled. Dr Shani van Den Heever, who had a unfortunate accident during the race, but is now recovered and back at work, managed to raise the most funds of all the team members, and despite being unable to complete the race, her sponsors were most generous in their contribution.
Jon Hyde of Trophy Toyota shared the following: ‘We at Trophy recognise the value of health and development of people in and around Tzaneen. Riding for CHoiCe Trust meant that we were able to have a fun day out as a team, while at the same time contributed funds to an important cause. We look forward to growing our team and taking part in the 2014 Cycle Challenge for CHoiCe. Please look out for us this year and let us know if you want to join us in this great initiative.’ CHoiCe Trust has allocated these funds to the painting and furnishing of the school library at Mmphai Primary School in Lenyenye. Cllr. Rene Pohl writes: The electricity crisis in GTM is not the only
problem area facing the municipality. The roads department also fi nds itself in
a similar situation. The GTM has only six workers available for fi xing the entire 6 000 km of road.
Then there are appointed contractors for specifi c road projects where major problems and disputes occur regularly. These projects then come to a halt.
Adding to the crisis is the newly bought front-end loader which has now broken down. The guarantee has expired and it has been standing for two and a half months.
The repair costs will be R80 000 to fi x it. Since the guarantee expired, the front-end loader hasn’t been serviced. It already did 4 000 hours within two years, and is 300 hours over its service period.
It has been reported three times, but nothing gets done. It seems that the senior offi cial did not budget for the maintenance of the front-end loader to be included in the yearly budget.
It seems that there isn’t a properly qualifi ed offi cial responsible for the workshop. The normal waiting period for orders is two to three months.
Having received these orders it again takes two to three weeks.
The tipper truck is also standing at Tzaneen Heavy vehicles, the exact details are unknown to me at this stage.
Where is the service programme for all GTM’s machinery, if at all? Are all of the offi cials and workers properly qualifi ed to do the job?
Apparently a GTM employee stole railway lines, was found guilty, paid a R50 000 fi ne, and went back to work!
These incidents caused by incompetent employees with a lack of integrity to fulfi l their responsibilities, now cause the GTM to deteriorate at a dangerously fast pace!
This information was given to me by seriously concerned community members.
Urgent letters will be written to the municipal manager as well as the mayor.
Questions will also be forwarded to Council for written response.
The DA continuously warns Council that 25% of the total budget must be allocated towards maintenance.
An emergency fund must also be in place, but in spite of this the ruling party rather think it best to buy a vehicle of R480 000 for the Speaker.

than 50 students at Mopani South East FET College received awards at the Best Exam Performance 2013 Awards held on Friday.
The event which was held at Phalaborwa Campus (Hospitality Centre) was to give recognition to students’ exceptional performance in the 2013 examinations.
The chief executive offi cer of the college, Charity Sehlake, together with college council members, presented the awards to the students in the following categories; top performer in all subjects per level, best performer in Gateway subjects (Accounting and Mathematics), most distinctions and overall top performer.
The categories including both National Certifi cate Vocational (NCV) and Nated programmes offered at the college.
A level 2 student in engineering and related design, Morongwe Pilusa, emerged as the overall top performer with 83% and received a certifi cate, trophy and a Lenovo tablet. Pilusa topped all the level 2’s (NCV) in all subjects, getaway subject (Mathematics) and received fi ve distinctions in fi ve subjects.
Pat Hermon Shikwambane also received
a certifi cate and trophy for obtaining fi ve distinctions in fi ve subjects.
As one of the aims of the awards is to motivate, academic sections were also awarded and thanked for the good results.
Best fundamental subject awarded was mathematical literacy (Phalaborwa Campus) with 85% and best vocational section awarded was civil engineering (Sir Val Duncan) with 65%.
Charity Sehlake congratulated all the recipients and thanked the educators for their hard work.
‘We are proud of our students, we want them to succeed and be better people. Our contribution as the college is to change the lives of the people through education. To all the lecturers, it is our responsibility to improve the lives of the students, therefore let’s strive to succeed and excel as we are an institution of excellence and choice. ,’ said Sehlake.
