What

Our aspirations for the calculatorProvide fresh data about current modelsHelp establish best practices Facilitate comparison to anonymized peersSupport evidence-based decision-making

Use CasesUsers want to know:Their resource sharing unit costsHow those costs evolve over timeHow their costs compare with peersUsers would like to project:The financial impact of automating a processOf buying a high-end scannerOf implementing a new local DocDel service

Make data entry simple and easyMinimize collection of confidential or sensitive dataAggregate and anonymize data in reportsUse existing functionality where possibleAim to produce actionable intelligence, not satisfy curiosity

Background:6 Years ago we conducted a cost analysis for ILL and On-Campus Document DeliveryProcess took 1 yearsResults:Increased our article charge from $11 to $15Increased our DDS charge from $3.25 to $5Future:Conduct cost analysis every 5-10 yearsILL Cost Calculator is identical to how we conducted our cost analysisWHY DID UCLA BECAME A BETA TESTER?

Traditional ILL Lending recoups some costs

50Actually, I think its worth noting that this library recoups nearly half or its borrowing costs via traditional ILL lending.

Within consortial borrowing schemes, participants dont charge each other. At all.

So its through those transactions that pass through the traditional ILL infrastructure, generally when lending hard-to-get items or interacting with less-familiar or distant partners, where lenders have an opportunity to bring in revenue. This institution tends to charge low prices. This may be an indication for them to consider maybe raising their lending charges a bit.
