That’s why, when asked to provide/operate video switchers for a 2011 SXSW (South by SouthWest music/fi lm/technology conference-festival) adjunct event, Stengle went with none other than Roland’s V-1600HD Multi-Format switcher and

V-440HD mixer/switcher. The extravaganza was the ever-popular Red Bull Thre3Style DJ battle, a 3-genre competition judging track selection, technical skills, creativity and crowd reaction level.

The System

“We generally use the units,” reports Stengle, “for concerts, house-of-worship and high-end corporate events/galas along with Christie HD10K and/or Barco 20K FLM projectors, Maxedia Broadcast media servers and various lighting consoles. The Red Bull showdown featuring performances by hip hop trio De La Soul and rapper/actor LL Cool J, warranted SDI capability for HD signal distribution over 200 feet, plus integration.” Using the V-1600HD in DSK mode, standard content switching requirements were more-than-adequately met. The V-1600HD located at FOH was housed outside, onsite at a Warehouse District parking lot in Austin. A complement of cameras surrounded the DJs, with each of two 10’x17’ HD-SDI screens at either end.

Application

Stengle is happy with the Roland V-1600HD video switcher’s “SDI inputs/outputs, and quality of hardware. The unit improves upon the V-440HD platform by adding HD-SDI and DVI input/outputs to meet high client demand for full HD video mixing.” He also likes its ease of installation, confi guration and operation. “It’s proven to be cost-effective and time-saving, too. And for transportability, versatility and reliability, the V-1600HD gets a 5 out of 5.”

Stengle sums up his experience with Roland hardware: “Roland is my fi rst choice because of the professional, broadcast-level features, quality mix with artist-friendly interface and fl exibility.”

ILIOS Lighting’s owner/lead designer Bryan Azar fully attests to the V-1600HD video switcher’s merits: “From setup to show, you can tell the machine is made to be quick, and work great with anything you throw at it. It fi ts our standard racks, plus it houses its own monitor.” Azar fi nds it “works well with what seems to be all formats. It’s a great switcher in any application.”
