Mecum AuctionsSpring ClassicGentlemen, start your bidding!

Mecum Auctions made some radical changes at the start ofthe 2008 auction season. Beginning March 29th, they held aweekly auction at the Indiana State Fairgrounds, just north ofdowntown Indianaoolis. These sales were televised onDiscovery HD each week for six weeks. The grand finale wasthis massive auction, which displaced their former long run-ning Belvedere, lL location for the Spring Classic. While it wasnot held on Memorial Day weekend as it had in previousyears, (l think there's some of big event in Indy on MemodalDay weekend!), it proved to be a very good sale all around.First of all, every single car was parked in a building on con-

crete or pavement. Initially, one would think that this wouldinvolve a lot of walking, but it was no more than if this sale washeld in tents on grass. Not only did the cars stay dry & out ofthe weather, but the dust factor was nil. Secondly, while notaround the massive audience of Chicagoland, they drew somenew consignors and bidders from further east. The big news was the sale of the Dave Christenholz collec-

tion. This had been promoted since the January auctions inArizona, when the collection was on exhibition in Scottsdale. The prime piece from the collection, a 1969 Chevy CamaroRS/SS ZLl, also proved to be the top sale of the weekend at$800,000.Held in the hometown of the Brickyard, we expected to see a

few Indy Pace Cars, and we were not disappointed. In addi-tion to no less than eight years of Pace Car editions and repli-cas, Mecum served up the actual pace car from 1964. One ofthe most significant Mustangs in history, it failed to find a newhome with a $300,000 final bid. Taking all of it 's history, cul-tural impact and mechanical specifications into consideration,we think it 's worth at least what the ZLI brought and were dis-appointed to see it go unsold.

While the number of cars consigned was down from 1275

last year to 751 this year, when all was said and done salescame in at a touch over $21 Million. Of those 751 lots, 407found new homes, Not too bad at all considering the market, and you can expect Mecum back here next year.

Very well preserved all-original interior, with more yellowing and fading from age rather than wear. Moderately cleaned up mostly originalengine bay. The rear of the undercarriage (from the drive axle on back) has had a recent superficial spray of undercoating. The remainder of thechassis and body has light surface rusting, typical of sitting parked in storage for a long period of time. Runs out quite well and very muted. Overallcondition 3, bid to $15,000, SOLD! Whle not quite a sexy as a GS, fhis Skylark does well with being a low-mile car that hasn't been taken apart.Thusly, sold for a strong but right price, so both the buyer and seller should be pleased.

Newer rear shocks and glass-pack resonators welded onto therusty exhaust pipes. Overall condition 3+, bid to 50,000, SOLD! Ihat whole big-fin Cadillac fad from the eighties sure has faded. Still, these arestatement cars and fhis was the right car in the right condition for the money.1976 Cadillac Eldorado 2-door convertible. Lot 510, VIN 6L67S0Q221317. Larkspur Blue, blue top, Harbor Blue & Larkspur Blue Nylon & vinyl benchseat interior. 283ci Power Pack V8 with 2-speed Powerglide automatic transmission.Recently completed body-off-frame restora-tion, with only '15 test miles indicated since.Loaded up with accessories, including powersteering, power brakes, full tinted glass, fend-er skirts, Continental kit, rocker moldings, AMradio with rear antenna, rocker panel moldingtrim, and under dash mounted tissue dis-penser. Restored to better than new condition, with no indications of wear or usage almostanywhere on the car. The one exception is theundercarriage, where the bare metal fasteners and components have started to develop light surface rust. Overall condition 1, bid to $85,000 notsold. /f's amazing how fickle light can be. When I first saw this car parked in one of the buildings, it was a definitive light blue. When I saw it out-side, I thought it was a different car, as it looked to all the world like it was mint green. Tri-five Chevy's seem to be seftling out to the same extent asmuscle cars, so this bid should've made an ownership change.1961 Chevrolet lmpala4-doorsedan. The sellerclaims that the 26,236 miles indicated areactual since new. lmmaculate original paint, with only a few light scuffs. The same alsoapplies to the chrome and the trim. The seatswere well preserved under the original dealerinstalled clear vinyl pattered seat coves. Whilethe original door panels are in great shape, thearm rests on all four of them have some extentof wrinkling. Additionally, the rear parcel shelf

has some light fading. Modemized battery and hoses, but otheruise the engine bay is original and cleaned up quite well. Dusty undercarriage, withoriginal undercoating & a new replacement gas tank. Overall condition 3+, bid to $11,000, SOLD! Mosf 61's seem to be underappreciated, as theywere after the wild fin era and before the 409 era. Regardless, his was one well preserved original car, and was one of my favorites of fhe sa/ebecause of it. lt was a/so the favorite of others, as it continued to get bids when it surpassed its $10K reserue.1965 Ghevrolet Ghevy ll Nova 4-door sedan. All original trim, with some light pittingor scufring on a most pieces, and some heav-ier dents on the ends of the side molding trim. The original steel wheels are now wearingChevy Citation wheel covers and economyradial tires. Older engine repaint, but other-wise very dingy and haphazardly maintainedengine compartment. Aftermarket electric

horn is mounted to the right side of the firewall. Heavily worn front seat, with multiple tears in both the bottom and back cushions. Heavily fadeddoor mounted arm rests, gauge pod vacuum plated bright work, and rear parcel shelf. Overall condition 4, bid to $4500, not sold. Ihere was someon-the-spot market correcting going on while it was being auctioned, as if was "bid" to $6400 before the seller figured that there was no money onit. I think that he was befter fooled the second time around, as even at this it should've sold easily. Not much call for bland, minimal option Chevyll 4-doors; not even from the let's-drop-in-a-real-motor small-block V8 crowd.1966 Ghevrolet Chevy ll Nova Super Sport 2-door hardtop. Lot F149, VIN 118376N153883.White with black vinyl bucket seat interior with con-

All GM in the engine compartment, which is well detailed and clean, although theoriginal hood bumpers are starting to dry rot.Good quality body prep and repaint, with olderbuffed out original trim showing a few minorscuffs. Better quality bumper replating. Thereare some gouges and scratches in the rightrear corner of the rear window from clumsytrim removal and sanding. Generally clean

undercaniage, with good paint detailing. Non stock chambered exhaust system with aftermarket chromed outlets. Reproduction seat upholstery, expertly installed. Hidden modern stereo, but with speakers cut into the rear parcel shelf. Overall condition 2-, bid to $41,500, SOLD! One of fhemost heavily "cloned" muscle cars, but this one seem lo check out as a real deal L79 Nova. Thusly, the pice is right.1966 Chevrolet Corvair Yenko Stinger Stage ll, modified 2-door hardtop. Lot U20, VIN 107376W131385fYS-028. White with dark blue accents,

black vinyl bucket seat interior. 160hp 164ciBoxer 6-cylinder with 4-speed manual trans.Disclosed on the auction block that the car was"rebodied": A 3-ring binder full of papenvorksince the original car was sold new confirmsthat the YS number is real. Claimed withdecals to be a Stage ll engine, but appears tobe more of a warmed up 140hp stock engine, especially since it is a docile as a stockCorvair. Mediocre old repaint, which is nowflat and chalky on most surfaces. Fitted with14-inch American Racing wheels with over-

sized tires, so the fronts rub on the wheel well trim. Serviceable original bumpers and trim. Like most late-model Corvairs, it sits low in the rearBone stock interior, which has replacement seat upholstery (fronts only - no back seat) and original carpeting. Grubby used car undercarriage, withsome attempt at cleanup under the hood - err, engine compartment lid (which is the Fiberglas Yenko item). Overall condition 3-, bid to $22,000SOLD! OnSundaythey found a live one (atthough both times it was verbatty declared to be a rebody - on a unibody car). At least we know what a Yenko Sfinger ser-al number tag and suppofting paperuork is now wotth: $12,000, srnce if's attached to a $4500 car. I know it doesn't add up - and neither does th.ssa/e.1967 Chevrolet Camaro Rally Sport / Super Sport 2door convertible. Lot F266.1, VIN 124677N191809. Over-the-top polished stainless steel fuel lines, brake lines, & dual exhaust system in a clean-ly painted undercarriage. All top-quality repro-duction soft trim, with all other interior components correctly restored. Overall Condition 1, bid to $44,000, SOLD! For a well as this car was restored,it was actually restored by a Camaro enthusiast in his garage. Shows what you can do if you have the time, skill, knowledge, and desire to do a caryou know very well right. Not cheap, but not crazy, either. Well worth the bid.1969 Chevrolet Camaro Rally Sport 2-door hardtop. Lot S99, VIN 124379N641266. Lemans blue with white stripes; white vinyl roof, Parchmentbuckets with gauge pack console interior. ZL1427ci all-aluminum V8 with 4-spd manualtrans. Well documented and known to be 7413indicated original miles and unrestored. Theoriginal blue paint has a few nicks and scratch-es, plus some light crazing on the trunk lid.The white stripes have somewhat sloppymasking - must have been a Monday paint job. There is some light discoloration of the driver'sseat, but otherwise there is far more aging ofthe interior than wear. Somewhat dingy enginecompartment, with some light surface rust onseveral steel components. However, it's all GM, and with the exception of a reproduction battery, is all circa 1969. More light surface rusting on thewhole of the undercarriage, although the shock absorbers and exhaust system is recently replaced and identical to stock. Overall condition 2-, bidto $800,000, SOLD! Ihe headline car, part of the featured collection consigned for the event, and one of the most talked about cars of the sale.Easy to see why, as it is documented as the most heavily optioned of the ZLl COPO Camaro's. While there was a $750K reseNe on it, whateverit sold for is market value.1969 Ghevrolet Camaro Yenko/SC 2-door hardtop. Lot 5199.1, VIN 124379N615704 I YS-9666. Fathom Green, black vinyl top and bucket seatinterior. 45Oho 427ci V8 with Hurst Dual-Gateshifted automatic. Verified as COPO 9561 L71High Performance Unit and 9737 Sports CarConversion Package, remanufactured byYenko Chevrolet, and sold as a new car byHult Chevrolet of Madison, Wl. The only otheroptions fitted to the car are the AM radio, vinylroof, power steering, automatic transmission, and Yenko Atlas cast aluminum wheels. whichhave since gone away and are now replacedby reproduction Rallye wheels on repro WideTread bias ply tires. The repaint has somelight polishing swirls in it. Original type of workmanship in installing the tape stripes, with lots of overlap. Excellent body and panel fit. Concoursquality engine bay is all GM and is spotless. The same can be said about the undercarriage, although the exhaust system is clamped together ratherthan welded. A period Stewart-Warner tachometer, which matches the Yenko-installed ancillary gauges, is clamped to the steering column.Otheruvisetheinteriorisfullyrestoredtolikenewconfigurationandcondition. Overall conditionl-,bidto$117,500,notsold. Darkgreenmetall icishardly the color that one dreams of having in a Yenko Camaro. Nor is lt with an automatic. Even with a better color combo, it would've probably gotmore action across the block. Possibly enough to reach the $125K reserve.1969 Chevrofet Caprice 2-door convertible. Lot F148, VIN 1646792031874. Garnet Red, black vinyl top, black vinyl bench seat interior. 335hp427ci YB with column shift TH400 automatictransmission. Product of GM of Canada.Factory options include air conditioning, powersteering, power brakes, tilt steering column, power windows, power seat, power door locks, and Rallye wheels (now on modern radialtires). Newer, concise restoration. Body prep, panel fit, and paint work are no less than GMspec from new. Very solid door fit. Non-origi-nal manufacturer modern replacement wind-shield. The rear suspension seems to sit a bitlow, common on these cars. Fully restoredtrunk, to include the spare tire rim & original spare tire. Reproduction door panels, seat upholstery carpeting, & dash pad, all expertly installed. Asidefrom band clamps on the hoses and a farm store battery, the engine bay is all GM and well detailed & clean. Very clean undercarriage, with semi-gloss black chassis & suspension components; new shocks, brake lines, gas tank, and dual exhaust system. Overall condition 2, bid to $42,000,not sold. The seller strongly implied that the 54,258 miles on the odometer were actual, but couldn't prove it. lt does make sense as a Canadiancar, as it was probably someone's summer nice day driver since it was new. Otherwise, it would have been heavily patched-up from the body sidemoldings on down. While as desirable as you can find a full-size '69 Chevy, the final bid is above market value.

A bench seat in a Challengeris something that you don't run into very often. Not that people really want one, but it is one of those things that can make a "one of one" car. components have started to show some aging, especially the NOS competition tires. The bare body repaint is far better than Ford could've pulledofi in 1964, with reproduction graphics. Nearly wrinkle-free replacement convertible top is about as well installed as possible on a regular produc-tion car. There is also some light yellowing of the seat vinyl and steering wheel. The stock blue carpeting and dash pad, with the red seat belts andarm rests, lend a unique patriotic motif. The motor, when idle, pretty much looks like a stock D-code 289. However, when running, is quite robustand loud, thanks to a shelled-out exhaust system that also looks bone stock. While this car originally left River Rouge with a 260, since Holman &Moody was tasked with making the pace cars competent to pace the starting grid, one can hardly call their installation of a detuned 289 intended forthe fledgling GT-40 program NOM. Neat as a pin undercarriage shows almost no signs of usage. Overall condition 1-, bid to $300,000, not sold. One of the most (if not THE most) histoically significant Mustangs even as it's faded color image leading the pack before the start of the race at lndyon earty color TV helped shape the Mustang's image for millions, so how can you say this was either bid too low or bid too high? ics, white vinyl bucket seat interior. 260ci 2-barrel V8 with 3-speed floor shift automatictransmission. Claimed by various MustangPace Car sources as the only IPC which still iswearing its original circa 1964 graphics andmost of its original paint. Quite a bit of panelpainting is evident by the masking l ines, includ-ing along some of the graphics. Everythingwas wet sanded down and then clear coatedover. The Mustang emblems were notreolaced on both front fender sides. New seatvinyl, door panel, and dash pad, with original

carpeting being very faded on the top of the transmission tunnel. Neatly repainted motor and engine compartment. All Ford components in therealso, but not necessarily correct for mid-l964, such as the modem ignition wiring, distributor cap in gray, & yellow dip stick. Surprisingly little under-carriage surface rust, with some light overspray from the clear coat on a dusty bottom. Overall condition 3, bid to $35,000 not sold. Odd as if seernsin 2008, dealers were so hot to get any Mustang they could get their hands on to sell that most of the Pace Car promotional cars, all 107 of whichwere awarded to top selling Ford dealers after their use as lndy festival and official use cars, were repainted or had the stripes removed lo se// asregular Mustangs. Boy, how things change...1967 Ford Thunderbird 2-door hardtop. Lot F29, VIN 7Y82Q159120. White, white vinyl roof, parchment vinyl & gray Nylon bucket seat interior.

428ci V8 with column shift automatic transmis-sion. Factory options include air conditioning& cruise control. Fitted with dealer installedKelsey-Hayes wire wheels, still shod with theoriginal red and white wall tires. The sellerclaims that the '13.045 miles on the odometeris actual since new. The left rear quarter panelwas repainted a long time ago, but it blendedwell with the rest of the original paint. Verylight rust staining on the vinyl under the mount-ing tabs of the landau bars. Generally cleanengine bay and mostly original - to include 41

year old radiator hoses. Slight mothball smell inside, emanating from the all original and well preserved interior. Overall Condition 3+, bid to $20,000,not sold. Confirmed correctwith a recently generated Marti Report on thecar. Two variations from stock are the reartrunk mounted spoiler and a pair or rear airshocks. Was also recently restored, with better lhan new quality body work, panel fit, andpaint application. All of the brightwork hasbeen replaced with reproduction pieces. Thesame applies to the interior, but with lesser

workmanship, as the seat upholstery fits loosely. Highly detailed engine bay would be MGA concours ready once the new economy battery wasreplaced. Clean undercarriage, redone in the stock manner with red primer on the bottom of the body and the correct stock exhaust system. Overall

condition 2, bid to $51,000, not sold. ln a woldfull of red Mach 1's, this is an odd duck. Oneof 5,958 GT's made in their last year.
