They’re free, fun and exciting and like the Fringe anywhere you take them as you find them!All Fringe events are FREE. There’s no need to book in advance – just turn up.

SATURDAY 4 OCTOBER

Wearing PurpleChurch House LS29 9DS 5.30–6.30pmSlightly irreverent, heart-warming, laugh-out-loud and occasionally shocking, these writers ‘of a certain age’ return for their second Fringe performance. Enjoy their experience-packed poetry, fiction, musings and memoirs.

Three Hares 7–7.20pmA new collaboration between poet Alison Lock and musician Robin Bowles exploring the woodlands of the South Pennines and bringing the two art forms together in a complementary and unique way.

Getting into Print9–10pmMeet and share the experience of authors Bryony Doran, Susan Elliot-Wright, Danuta Reah, Ruth Valentine, Linda Lee Welch, Jenny Rodwell, and award-winning foreign correspondent Angela Robson as they answer your questions about getting published. Meet Bill Allerton and understand what drove him to found Cybermouse MultiMedia.

The House of Tragic She9–10pmA harrowing, humorous journey round the mental health services through the stories of three women, exploring literature’s constant re-interpretation of madness. A psychedelic show of experimental electronic music, physical theatre & visual projections by Six Lips Theatre!

SUNDAY 5 OCTOBER

Poetry SHOUTING Meet at Cow and Calf car park 12–1pm Come for a walk and SHOUT poetry into the wilderness of Ilkley Moor – your own or other people’s, it’s up to you! Poetry books and loud hailer provided. Please note the walk is mainly on footpaths with some uneven ground – you’ll need adequate shoes and bring waterproofs.

MONDAY 6 OCTOBER

Jenny: a frightening woman!9–9.45pmBorn in a Newcastle gutter, brought up in a convent, Jenny survived WW1 as a prostitute in Normandy, living by her wits to a ripe old age. A frightening story told in 10 dramatic poems with a little music.

Shash Trevett 9.15–9.45pmYork-based poet Shash Trevett reads in English and Tamil from a selection of her work about the civil war in Sri Lanka, touching on the trauma of warfare, exile and the lasting effects of conflict.

Wharfedale Poets 9–9.50pmTaking their cue from the breathtaking Dales countryside, ---eight Wharfedale Poets read from, and discuss, their joint debut anthology Drystone Lines.

Hartlington Press 9–10pmDales-based Hartlington Press host an evening of readings and discussions headlined by local poets Ray Snape and Roger Nelson.

THURSDAY 9 OCTOBER

Ilkley Writers 9–10pmInspired by the windswept Ilkley Moor and drawing on local archives, Ilkley Writers weave local stories into a rich and dramatic piece shrouding the audience in a dark and chilling world.

FRIDAY 10 OCTOBER

Bell-la-Bell 9.15–9.45pmTwins Marva & Pat Bell take you on a Caribbean journey of humour, love and pain in a fast-paced performance of sketches, monologues & poetry!

SATURDAY 11 OCTOBER

Creative Booster Church House Ilkley LS29 9DS 5–6pmFlex your creative muscles exploring the imaginative potential of ‘getting it wrong’ and see the familiar differently in this practical workshop by Playful Being.

Something on My MindChurch House, Ilkley LS29 9DS 7.30–8.30pmCelebrating World Mental Health Day, Mind in Bradford service users perform from their recent anthology Something on My Mind. Incisive and inspirational poetic expressions about dealing with mental health in our society.

MONDAY 13 OCTOBER

Every Voice CountsClarke Foley Centre, Ilkley LS29 9DZ 7.30–8.30pmSI Ilkley present a mosaic of women’s stories. Join them for storytelling, conversations, life writing exercises and the chance to add your own voice.

An After Dinner’s Sleep... 9–10pmMaria, Gill and Hannah, MA students in Creative Writing from Leeds Trinity University, have a poetic rant about youth, age and what might lie in-between.

All Aboard the Book Bus!9.15–10pm All aboard the Book Bus with Adrian Thompson! Learn all about the work done with children in rural schools in Zambia by UK charity Book Bus. An adventure featuring elephants, lions and lots of books!

TUESDAY 14 OCTOBER

A River of Voices 9–10pmThe Mouth of the River group, who met via poetry workshops with past Festival Poet in Residence Rommi Smith, perform poems and stories fused with live music in a show flowing between spoken-word and song.

War Hospital StoriesBeyond the Trenches: Everyday Life and WWI 9–10pmThe Wartime Hospital at Beckett Park was the setting for extraordinary scenes 100 years ago. Richard Wilcocks tells some true stories about the lives of men and women from his acclaimed new book.

Something Rhymed 9.15–10.15pmWho did Jane Austin turn to for literary friendship? What about Charlotte Brontë? Emily Midorikawa and Emma Claire Sweeney discuss the friendship of female authors and share new writing inspired by the friendships of Ilkley Festival goers.

Going Home: Fever Therapy 9.15–10.15pm Local author Jim Burnside reads from his fourth novel Fever Therapy, discusses his literary influences and answers your questions about the publishing industry.

THURSDAY 16 OCTOBER

Bradford in the Great War: 100 Years OnBeyond the Trenches: Everyday Life and WWI9–10pm1914. How did local people react to outbreak of war? What did the global conflict mean to them? Bradford WW1 Group explore the challenging dilemmas faced by local people as the Great War began.

Tibet: an Accidental Pilgrimage 9–10pm Ivan Cooper reads from his book Tibet: An Accidental Pilgrimage. Comic, dramatic and on occasion scary, join Ivan on a trip through the remote and barely-visited regions of Tibet!

FRIDAY 17 OCTOBER

Sing FREEDOM9–10pmDaughter of ANC activist Rusty Bernstein, Frances Bernstein tells of growing up in apartheid South Africa as Free Range choir perform songs that helped sustain the liberation movement.

Poems Become Songs 9–10pmAn ambitious collaboration of poets, composers and instrumentalists from York. Hear Sounds Lyrical Project fusing poetry and spoken word to new classical music in a fascinating and original concert.

SATURDAY 18 OCTOBER

Change Your Mind (2214 AD)Church House LS29 9DS 6–7pmWhat will the future be like? Leona Deakin talks about her time travelling debut novel Anomaly and asks the audience to make their own predictions for the future.

The Happening at the Bandstand Ilkley Bandstand on The Grove LS29 9LW 6.30pm and 9pmInspired by the Cow and Calf this group of local artists will be bringing live music installation and projections of dynamic physical performance. SurvivingChurch House LS29 9DS 7.30–8.30pmExpect to be moved, surprised and entertained as writers from Osmondthorpe Hub perform short stories, poetry and plays on the theme of surviving, bridging words and worlds.
