Did you know? Shutterfly Shakopee is the newest location of the three primary Shutterfly manufacturing teams. Products are produced for a family of brands, such as Tiny Prints, Wedding Paper Divas and Shutterfly, and range from invitations and cards to photo books and photo gifts (playing cards, phone cases, etc.). Shutterfly is essentially mass customization and faces some unique challenges with regard to quality, seasonal loading and implementing lean and continuous improvement.

President’s Message Tracey Bauer, IIE Twin Cities President. The weeks have flown by as we have all been taking
advantage of the summer months and its outdoor
opportunities and here we are, Q3! Fall is
approaching, school has starting up again and
another transition is in the works. This new season
also brings a new class of Industrial Engineers at
surrounding regional colleges and the Annual Dave &
Busters Student Networking Event hosted by IIE Twin
Cities. IIE Twin Cities Liaison, Nate Andrican, is
planning the event for November 5th
, so please
consider joining us as we share the love of the
profession with our future IIE superstars.
Since we have last published in Q2, Jeromy Knapp,
President-Elect for IIE Twin Cities, made the journey
to the IIE National Convention in Nashville to
represent our chapter. He had a lot to stand up for
with repeat recognition for both the Gold Chapter
Award and the Platinum Newsletter Award. He was
also there in support of a local lean partner, Didier
Rabino, who was
awarded as an
Honorary IIE Member.

Nominations for IIE Twin Cities Board Members are now open for a Jan-Dec 2015 term. Please send an e-mail to [email protected] if you'd like to run for a position or if you'd like to nominate someone else by

Serving on the IIE Twin Cities Board of Directors provides you with the benefit to:
- Network with other IE and process improvement professionals
- Lead the chapter to fulfilling our vision to be recognized as a premier organization in the Twin Cities
by providing superior value to students, IE professionals, and continuous improvement professionals
- Lead committees
- Help develop strategy and action plans to accomplish the chapter's vision
- Have fun!
Chapter Elected Positions: These positions are voted positions by IIE Twin Cities membership. Members can nominate other members or themselves.
1. Events Director (2 positions) Plan Tours, Social Events, and/or other Professional Development events and send out invitations to members
Work hand-in-hand with speakers/event hosts to create a positive experience for both them and IIE
Update surveys for each event using the survey template and record result and attendance for future event planning and reporting
2. Membership Director Welcome new members and encourage renewal of membership for expired members or members
Facilitate mass-communication to the chapter membership and respond to member e-mails
3. Newsletter Director Create and distribute chapter newsletters to inform members of events, publicize chapter information, encourage involvement
from inactive chapter members and promote IIE
Submit chapter newsletter to IIE National Newsletter Competition
4. Social Media & Web Director Engage member discussion, facilitate job postings, and communicate chapter
activities through the active use of social media, such as LinkedIn and Twitter
Maintain and update the IIE Twin Cities website with chapter information and event details
Communicate with National IIE to keep current with website requirements and improvement upgrades
5. Student Liaison Director Connect with student chapters and promote industrial engineering as a major
Promote attendance to one or more IIE current events as well as involvement
after graduation

This position works with manufacturing, customer care, and engineering to determine improvement opportunities, improve product and processes and reduce nonconforming product and customer contacts through lean six sigma implementation. Chapter Activity Report Focus On: Institute Support

Jeromy Knapp, the 2015 IIE Twin Cities President-Elect, took the opportunity to participate in the
National Conference held in Nashville, TN this year. Along with representing IIE Twin Cities, Jeromy
was also there in support of a local lean partner, Didier Rabino. For several years now IIE Twin
Cities has been the beneficiary of a fantastic partnership with Didier Rabino. Didier has presented
workshops that serve as fundraisers for the group as well as influenced several members of IIE
Twin Cities Board of Directors as an instructor, coworker, mentor and friend. For this reason, he
was nominated and received an Honorary IIE Member Award at the National IIE conference.
The IIE Region leadership team was represented by Mayo Clinic’s Tarun Mohan Lal and Thomas
Roh. Tarun is the Regional VP and he gave a presentation on Human Systems: Healthcare and
Sustainability - “Implementation of Human Factor Analysis and Classification System for
Understanding Never Events.” Thomas is our Assistant Regional VP and he gave a presentation on
Patient Safety – “A Systems Approach to Improving Patient Access to Mental Health Resources.”
IIE Twin Cities was awarded Professional Gold Chapter, yet again. This is always a chapter goal and
with only five other chapters receiving this award in the country, everyone involved deserves
congratulations.
One of the highlight for many was the topic of potential name change for the organization. The
proposal is to change the name from Institute of Industrial Engineers to Institute of Industrial and
Systems Engineers. This will be coming to a vote in December this year. The question will be in the
2015 ballot for the IIE Officers Election. Polls will open Dec. 10th
, 2015, and close Jan. 15th
, 2016.
The vote is restricted to IIE professional members, but IIE student members are encouraged to
participate in discussions.

After the tour, the volunteer portion of the event started. The task for the volunteers was to work an assembly line to fill food boxes for
the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP). Second Harvest Heartland provides a box of nutritious food each month to low-
income seniors 60 years and over through the Nutrition Assistance Program for Seniors (NAPS).
The assembly line consisted of Work Stations that started with making a box from a flat folded box, adding an item of food at each of 13
work stations, placing a sheet listing the contents into the box, and palletizing the completed boxes. The attendees quickly realized that
this was a perfect task for a bunch of IEs! We noticed various improvements that we were making as time went on - making the pick area
more ergonomic by stacking boxes; learning the job of the workstation both up and downstream in order to help out if the worker at the
other workstation was re-stocking their supplies.
The results at the end of the 2 hour assembly line shift were: 9 pallets /450 boxes of food packed.
This equates to 13,050 pounds of food or 10,875 meals! Great job to the IIE and other volunteers! 7

IIE’s student outreach activity is called “Brilliant Bracelets” and provides education on
process improvement principles such as brainstorming, spaghetti diagrams, layout design,
and visual standard work through a hands-on activity where “bracelet factories” produce
Brilliant Bracelets for picky customers. The girls work in teams to develop ideas for
improvement and implement their future state in order to produce bracelets more quickly
and with higher quality.
Participants and volunteers agreed that this year’s event was fantastic! Over 125 girls and 50
volunteers came together to participate in 4 activities total. Everything went smoothly,
everyone had a lot of fun and Normandale has shown interest in hosting future events.

us to contribute two separate activity rooms running the Brilliant Bracelets activity: Kelly
Minchow, Jeromy Knapp, Tracey Bauer, Michael Lubke, Raymond Zhang, Janelle Ross,

Past Event Recap Second Harvest Heartland Tour & Volunteer Event, June 2015
On June 23rd
, IIE Twin Cities had a tour and volunteer event at Second Harvest Heartland’s
Maplewood facility. Before the volunteer portion, the attendees received a brief tour of
the distribution warehouse. The distribution warehouse is where donated food is
received. There are approximately 60 warehouse workers on 2 shifts and there are 30
trucks owned by Second Harvest Heartland for use in pickup and delivery of the food.
On April 11, IIE volunteered to provide an Industrial Engineering-themed experiment during SWE
Minnesota’s Annual WOW! That’s Engineering event, held at Normandale Community College in
Bloomington. WOW! That’s Engineering is designed to provide young girls with early exposure to
science and engineering concepts.

What is IIE?
IIE is the world’s largest professional society dedicated solely to the support of the industrial engineering
profession and individuals involved with improving quality and productivity. Founded in 1948, IIE is an international, non-profit association that provides leadership for the application, education, training,
research and development of industrial engineering.
With approximately 15,000 members and 280 chapters worldwide, IIE’s primary mission is to meet the ever-
changing needs of industrial engineers, which includes undergraduate and graduate students, engineering
practitioners and consultants in all industries, engineering managers, and engineers in education,
research and government.
What is IIE Twin Cities?
The IIE Twin Cities Chapter 38 provides a network for individuals within Minnesota and surrounding areas to
collaborate about industrial engineering. Our members include professionals with industrial engineering degrees, both working in IE and non-IE roles and
professionals working in IE related functions.
We provide monthly events which include topics in professional development, Lean, Six Sigma, Quality,
process improvement and tours at distribution centers, manufacturing facilities, hospitals and consulting firms. We also promote the industrial engineering profession by providing scholarships to IE students and becoming
involved with several student IIE chapters.
