Highland Fantasy

The story of Brlgadoon begins two hundred years ago, when it vanished in the Highland miststo lift once only in every two hundred years.

On such a day two Americans, Tommy Albright and his pal Jeff Douglas, stumble on the village, and in the village square they become part of a world that had stood still for one hundred years, andwhere they meet Fiona Mac Keith and Meg Brockie.

Tommy and Fiona find in each other a deep understanding, Meg Brockie makes no pretenceof her feeling towards Jeff, who is kept constantly on his guard against her affectionate advances.

There is a wedding to be performed in Brlgadoon that very day and Fiona invites Tommy toaccompany her to her father's house while Jeff is to accompany Meg.

While Tommy and Jeff are at Fiona's house they discover an old Family Bible, and are amazedwhen they read-" Fiona, born October 10th, 1722, and Jean, April 8th, 1728."

Tommy knows Fiona to be 24, and her sister six years younger. Jeff comes to the conclusionthat these two girls have been named aft,er the ones in the Bible, but Tommy remembers that it isJean who is to be married to-day to Charles MacPherson, while in the Bible there is an entry-JeanMaclaren married to MacPherson, May 24th, 1746.

Tommy asks Fiona for an explanation, she suggests they accompany her to the house of Mr.Murdoch, the village schoolmaster, who, upon her request, agrees to tell them the wonderful storyof "Brigadoon".

Mr. Murdoch tells them: "What happened in Brigadoon was a miracle; and most folk don'tbelieve in them. Miracles require faith, and there's not much of that in the world to-day. Now, ifan outsider were to come to Brigadoon and hear the tale from the lips of a lassie or of a laddie theywould think she or he were daft, and that would be humiliating for the story teller. But if I wereto tell them, whatever they thought it wouldn't hurt me, that is why only I can tell the miracle tostrangers.

" It happened two hundred years ago when the Highlands were plagued with witches, wickedsorcerers, who were taking the Highland folk away from the teachings of God and putting the Devilin their souls. These women were not real sorcerers, there were no such things, but their influencewas very real. In Brigadoon we had an old minister of the Kirk named Mr. Forsythe, the kindestman in Scotland. No man ever loved his parish more than he did, but he was growing old, and itgrieved him that one day soon he would have to leave all those dear to him; he wanted to save hisparish from all the outside evils of the world before he died, which would require a miracle.

" He spent many days walking through the glen thinking and consulted with me, as he wantedit to be a well-organised miracle, and finally decided what he was going to pray for, and at an earlyhour on Wednesday morning he went out to a hill beyond Brigadoon and made his prayer to God."

" There in the hush of a sleeping world, he asked God that night to make Brigadoon, and allthe people in it, vanish into the Highland mist, vanish, but not for always. It would return Just asit was for one day every hundred years. The people would go on leading their customary lives, buteach day when they awakened it would be a hundred years later. Mr. Forsythe figured there wouldbe no change in the lives ofthe people, they just would not be in any century long enough to be awayfrom Brigadoon knowing if the miracle were granted he would never see it again. That was two

hundred years ago. He had intended to ask for the miracle on the Tuesday but Charlie was notexpected back from Edinburgh University 'till Tuesday late, and he didn't want anything to go wrongwith the wedding so he left it until WEldnesday. According to the contract he made, If one of theinhabitants leaves this Brigadoon the miracle is broken for ever. A stranger can stay if he loves some-one here enough to give up everything in the world outside, which is how it should be, after all, ifyou love someone deeply, anything is possible."

At the wedding celebrations Harry Ritchie, who had always loved Jean, asked permissionfrom Charlie to dance with her, Charlie consented. Harry had always been jealous of Charlie.Suddenly there was a scream from Jean and Harry tried to attack Charlie with a dirk and was preventedby Tommy. Harry, in his anger, told the people if he couldn't have what he wanted he would breakthe spell of Brigadoon by leaving, and dashed Into the forest. Poor tormented Harry Ritchie lost hislife trying to escape and happiness was turned into mourning.

Tommy broke the news to Fiona that he must return to America immediately. On his returnto America, Tommy told the girl he was engaged to, that during his absence something had happenedwhich now made it impossible for him to go through with the wedding.

Suddenly, in a New York bar he saw a vision of Fiona and decided there and then to returnto her. Jeff travelled back to the Highlands with him and as they came upon the spot where theyhad left Brigadoon for a few brief moments it once more returned out of the mists and Tommy wentinto them, the words of Mr. Murdoch ringing in his ears: "If you love someone deeply, anythingis possible."
