Advanced technical details
Recording TV VideoLAN
This can be done by manually entering the URL for the relevant channel (as noted in the table above) and enabling the stream/save feature of VLC.
The methods to do this are slightly different depending on the operating system you are on.
Ensure you save the file as “MPEG TS” format. Disable transcoding as this will take up processor resources and may deliver a file which does not play.
NOTE: Recording a TV program takes up a substantial amount of disk space – i.e around 2GB for an hour of standard-‐definition recording.
Recording TV under Windows 1. Right click the TV station you wish to save in the channel list and click
‘save’.
Version 1.1 – 21/12/2012
2. Enter a filename to save the recording to – using the extension “.ts” is recommended
3. If this is the first time you have attempted to record TV, you need to create a new profile.
a. Under “Settings – Profile”, press the create new profile button – the furthest on the right (see picture below)
b. Name the profile – i.e “Network TV Record” c. In the encapsulation tab, select MPEG-‐TS d. In the video codec tab, tick the “video” checkbox and select “keep
original video track” (as seen below) e. In the audio codec tab, tick the “audio” checkbox, and select “keep
original audio track”
f. Save the profile g. Select this new profile from the drop down h. If you wish to view the program as it is being recorded, tick the
“Display the output” checkbox WARNING: The volume mute function of VLC will not work while simultaneously viewing and recording using this option. i. Click “Start” to start the recording j. To stop recording, simply hit the stop button. You can now open
the file in VLC to play it back
Recording TV under Mac OS X The process with the Mac version is a bit different:
1. From the File menu in VLC, select “Open Network” (or use the Command-‐N shortcut keys)
2. Enter the URL of the TV channel you wish to record (from the list below) Ensure the URL has ‘@’ added after udp://, i.e ‘udp://@224.2.0.2:1234’ for ABC1
Version 1.1 – 21/12/2012
3. On the bottom of the open stream, tick ‘Streaming/Saving’ and click ‘Settings’ to open the settings menu
4. Enter/Select a file to save to (using the file extension “.ts” is recommended)
5. Select the MPEG-‐TS encapsulation method If you wish to view the program at the same time, tick “Display the stream locally” WARNING: The volume mute function of VLC will not work while simultaneously viewing and recording using this option.
6. Press ‘OK’ to close the streaming options stream, and ‘Open’ to start the recording
7. To stop the recording, simple press the stop button
DVBLink (Windows Media Center, iOS, Android, others)
Using the DVBLink server and the IPTV addon (paid addon, € 21.01 with 20 day free trial), it is possible to stream TV into various clients – such as Windows Media Center (included with Windows 7) and clients on Android and iOS phones/tablets. DVBLink also makes it possible to schedule recordings.
• DVBLink does not use the Electronic Program Guide (EPG) data provided over the air. To use this data, a separate data feed (XMLTV) needs to be obtained. One source of this data is the XMLTV feed from www.oztivo.net, and using XMLTV:Download ( http://epgstream.net/xmltv-‐download/ ), configuring XMLTV:Download to save the XMLTV data to C:\ProgramData\DVBLogic\DVBLink\XMLTV\XMLTV.xml . Then, create a XMLTV Program Source in DVBLink and link them together in the channels screen (under ‘EPG Sources’)
• Use the m3u playlist file on Nexus to initialize the channel list.
Version 1.1 – 21/12/2012
ProgDVB (Windows)
ProgDVB (http://www.progdvb.com/download_progdvb.html) is another client that is capable of accessing network TV. A free basic version is available, as well as a paid version with recording and other features.
To use network TV with ProgDVB, enter the URL of the playlist file from Nexus as a new “IPTV Service” and press ‘Update’. The channels will appear in the “IPTV client” tab in the left hand pane of ProgDVB.
• AC3Filter (http://ac3filter.net/wiki/Download_AC3Filter) is required to obtain audio on high definition (News24, 7mate, GEM, ONE, SBS HD) channels.
Manually accessing TV channels
The SAP announcement mechanism provides a way for the list of TV channels to be provided on demand. However, should you need to enter in the URL of the TV channel manually, here is the list of TV channels on the network:
