Several members of the City of Katy and Waller County attended a ceremony and luncheon to join Igloo in christening the new facility. A flag raising ceremony conducted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 9182 highlighted the special day.
The new facility will serve as a warehouse and distribution center to handle Igloo’s growing sales and expanding product lines. Igloo produces approximately 20 million products out of its Katy facility each year. The site will increase Igloo’s total Katy footprint to 1.8 million square feet and will be able accommodate future expansion, provide ample trailer and automobile parking, and have cross-dock configuration with 120 dock doors.
“We’re gong to bring about 17,000 coolers in here. We’re going to be able to run about a third of our business out of here,” said Patrick Poole, Senior Director of Supply Chain.
Igloo, one of the largest employers in the City of Katy, is expected to add 250 additional employees by December 2013, some will staff the new distribution center.
“When you are adding an entire distribution center we’re going to need people to operate it,
and it’s exciting with the economy the way it is to be able to add jobs and grow as a company as well,” Poole said.”
This expansion to a new location coincides with Igloo’s increasing manufacturing capacity
and record sales growth.
“We have been e x p e r i e n c i n g double digit growth as a percentage of sales for the last three years. During this time Igloo has entered into a variety of short-term leases for warehouse and distribution space to cope with the increased level of inventory and order volume. This new distribution center is pivotal to be able to keep up with our substantial
growth and to prepare for the years to come,” commented Igloo chairman and CEO Gary Kiedaisch
Kiedaisch added that he’s never experienced a better climate for doing business than the one created by Waller County and the City of Katy.
The real estate used to have an agricultural exemption, meaning Waller County only saw tax revenues of $106 ever five years. Now the property will generate at least $250,000 over the same period.

A nn Hodge, the longtime President/CEO of the Katy Area Chamber of
Commerce, says she will enter the Republican primary for the Texas House of Representatives seat being vacated by Bill Callegari, (R) Katy. The exclusive announcement came Monday evening in a conversation with Covering Katy.
Hodge says the chamber’s board has given its blessing for her to continue working in her current
position should she win.Hodge has never held an elected
position, but she has served 5 Republican and Democratic Governors on the Texas Workforce Investment Council over a 22 year period. She chaired the organization for 12 of those years.
Prior to joining the chamber in 1999, Hodge was employed as Vice President of External Affairs for BFI Waste Management. Part of her responsibilities with BFI included
working with members of the Texas Legislature and spending time in the halls of the state house complex.
“I have a great deal of respect for what it takes to get the job done,” Hodge said.
Callegari has held the District 132 seat since 2001. He is stepping down and is not running for any other office.
Hodge says she will make a formal announcement about her candidacy “soon.”

CAP Wins $40,000 in Rachael Ray $100K Challenge
Citizens for Animal Protection (CAP) competed with 49 organizations and won Division Four in the 2013 ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge. CAP found homes for 1,807 pets during the three-month competition, an increase of 625 lives saved over the same three months last year.
CAP won four categories throughout the three-month competition this summer, winning a total of $40,000: $25,000 in their Division, $5,000 Fast Track Winner - first month for most animals adopted in their division, $5,000 - Seventh Inning Stretch Winner for winning the second month and $5,000 - Completing the Challenge by adopting the minimum required, 300 lives saved.
During the next six months, CAP will be using the funds from the ASPCA grant to hold more adoption events and place even more homeless pets with new, forever families. For more information on CAP go to www.cap4pets.org.

Tom Wilson Elementary recently hosted the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Speakers’ Committee for a full day of sessions for the students to learn about the rodeo, animals, Texas History and western life. never really seen. To block shots that look this Pixar-perfect, Cuarón and director of photography Emmanuel Lubezki, a master of the unbroken take, required exceptionally rigid choreography. You can hear the rehearsal, alas. At times, it sounds stiff, in the way that video game dialogue might, or any time you drop human faces and voices into what is, essentially, an animated movie.
The rest of the production more than compensates. Steven Price’s spare, tense score crescendos during moments of high disaster, screwing tight the tension as Cuarón lets the vacuum of space swallow any sounds that aren’t transmitted through a glove or a suit. After the punctuations of chaos, silence and emptiness move into the screen and let the tiny humans fill the remainder. Clooney’s fine here, and he serves his purpose capably, but the show belongs to Bullock, who reveals that her life on Earth makes space feel almost cuddly by comparison.
As she grapples with new despairs and old, she becomes our Odysseus, the brave and clever home-seeker, leaving a ruin of ships behind her. As she descends into her heart’s darker corners, running out of air and heat in a yawning void, your space epic finds its meaning: a single human life weighted against the oceanic heavens, a speck in a hurricane. With its utterly convincing simulation of space, “Gravity” leverages beauty to convey beauty, collapsing the immensity of the planet and the universe into that windblown speck. Somehow it achieves the sort of visceral astonishment that drew humans to space in the first place. It is, in sum, no small wonder.

“Gravity,” the worst NASA recruiting video ever conceived, transports the old-fashioned shipwreck tale to low orbit around Earth. Sandra Bullock and George Clooney are astronauts and float about as they run a bit of Hubble telescope tech support. Then, disaster strikes, and all they want is to get home, somehow. It is a story concept that dates back at least to Homeric epics, even if “Gravity” owes more to “2001: A Space Odyssey.” It is as wondrous as either. Emotionally wrenching and visually exultant, “Gravity” borders on a masterwork. Let these words be spake not lightly: This is the rare film actually worth the exorbitant splurge of an IMAX 3D ticket.
The visuals, for starters, are miraculous. Rarely in cinematic history has so convincing a lie been committed to the screen. You know, logically, that this movie was not shot in outer space, because movie budgets do not yet run into the hundreds of billions of dollars, and who could cater that set, anyway. And yet! How else to explain the weightlessness? For “Gravity,” director/producer Alfonso Cuarón (“Children of Men,” “Y Tu Mamá También”) opted not for the “Apollo 13” technique of yo-yoing his crew up and down in a free-falling Boeing. Instead he invented and appropriated, over the past five years, a system of harnesses and lights and computers and cameras and sets that could scarcely be more convincing. Even as Google Earth has dulled the awe of overhead planetary shots, the panoramas of islands and isthmuses and storms and cities and aurora borealis from space are nothing shy of mind-bending. The combination of physics and optics makes “Gravity” an instant technical touchstone, a waking dream.
To a spellbound brain, dangers seem more real, and as dangers seem real, so too do characters’ fears. Cuarón wrote the script, along with his son, Jonás, to be as austere as Hollywood conventions would permit. BAE Systems announced Tuesday the planned closing of its Sealy facility and the layoff of all 325 employees by the end of June 2014. The location has been a production site for U.S. military tactical vehicles since 1990.
“The company greatly appreciates the hard work and dedication of the entire workforce in Sealy,” said Erwin Bieber, president of BAE Systems Land & Armaments sector.
The Sealy plant is closing as BAE reduces its workforce to better compete in an environment where the military is having its budget cut.
“We explored every possible option to maintain the viability of the facility, but the decline in U.S. defense spending has made it necessary for us to continue rationalizing our business base. This was a difficult
decision, but it in no way reflects upon the hard work and commitment of the employees,” Bieber said. ”We will do all we can to assist them during this difficult transition.”
Last month, the company announced a significant reduction at the facility. Combined with this announcement, a total of approximately 325 employees that currently
support military production will be affected by the closure of the Sealy facility. It is anticipated that most of the Sealy employees will be released from the company between November and the end of June 2014.
Employees will be given the opportunity to relocate to other BAE locations where jobs are available that match their skill set.
Any remaining work that needs to be completed after the closure will be done at other BAE facilities. Some programs will transition in whole or in part, while some will be completed and final deliveries made to the customer prior to closure.
The company will continue to produce the armored cabs for Soldiers and Marines. The facility also has contracts for commercial oil and gas equipment enclosures.

It has been said many a times that it is not about where you start, but where you finish. For now, the finish has not yet appeared for Morton Ranch junior cross country runner Sarah Parker. But there sure has been a start to something new.
Last season Parker was not participating at the varsity level. In fact, she was not even one of the top runners at the junior varsity level. At that time, she had a choice: either sulk and complain about not getting her chance to compete at the highest level, or work to create her own good fortune.
Parker chose the latter.“Last year I was on the lower part of JV. I was not that
good,” Parker said. “I worked really hard.”To date, not only is Parker on the varsity team, but she
is one of the top runners on the Morton Ranch team. And with the District 19-5A meet just a couple weeks away, Parker is looking to make some things happen. This is more than attainable because Parker made changes in the off season that have paid off greatly for her.
It started by identifying what needed to be done to improve. So Parker took heed to what coaches Shawn Siemers and Charlene Marsh said that she needed to work
on, which was mostly technical things like running form. Then Parker did something that successful individuals in any industry do.
“I looked at people who were faster than me. I would run close to them and work to keep up,” Parker said. “I kept pushing to get to their level. And I kept doing this until I got to where I am now. With this and listening to the coaches, I have come a long way. They (Marsh, Siemers) are the best coaches anyone could ever have. I improved a lot and along the way, my confidence has been boosted as well.”
Now it’s time for new goals, which Parker already has in place. First, she wants to perform well at the district meet so that she can make it to regionals, and possibly state. But she also wants to reach a level that will extend well beyond the high school level.
“One of my main goals is to run a 19:45. That’s a time when college coaches start to look at you,” Parker said. “I really want to reach that point because I would really love to run in college.”
Based on the work ethic, persistence and the belief, Parker seems to have all the ingredients to make everything she wants and more to happen. Now, it’s all about doing.

The Katy Tigers football team at mid-season remains undefeated, 5-0. Running backs Rodney Anderson leads the Tigers in total yards with 715 and Kyle Porter at 561. The quarterback duo of Kiley Huddleston and Garrett Doiron has added 568 yards and seven touchdowns.
The defensive secondary has really stepped up allowing only The Woodlands to cross the Katy goal line. Total points allowed in five games are a measly 20 as compared to the offensive output of 197.
In the defensive secondary, a mostly untested group before the season, has proven capable of handling what comes at them. JoVanni Stewart, cornerback, Collin Wilder, safety, and strong safety, Travis Whillock are all sophomores. “Once you step on the field you are not young
anymore,” says Head Coach Gary Joseph. “You are a varsity football player. All of the kids are performing well and will continue to get better.
“The biggest thing in playing defense is teaching how to handle the speed of the game,” continues Joseph. “They have to learn the different coverages and techniques. They have played five games now and have been through the fire. It’s always going to be a work in progress.
The Woodlands was the only team to score a touchdown, actually two touchdowns against the Tigers. Joseph attributes the defensive breakdown to inexperience and communication. “The defense probably made a couple of calls that they shouldn’t have made.”
Even good teams need to constantly improve, and the Tigers are no different. “There are a lot of things we need to
improve on,” says Joseph. “We have to improve our execution, improve our passing game and improve on our pass protection.” Huddleston has completed 23 of 42 attempts for 394 yards. Doiron has completed 12 of 25 attempts for 245 yards.
On the defensive side, Joseph would like to see improvement in the pass rush.
The biggest concern for the Tigers now is getting everyone healthy. Anderson sustained an injury in The Woodlands game that is slow to heal. Joseph preferred not to talk about what Anderson’s injury was, but the word is that it was one of his feet. His action was limited in the Mayde Creek game, substituting with Kyle Porter. He did not play at all in the Morton Ranch game. His status is listed as day-to-day.
Kiley Huddleston’s shoulder is better, but still not 100 percent. Doiron is getting
more playing time. “He is really coming along and doing well,” commented Joseph in regards to Doiron. “We are extremely pleased with him and are looking for him to continue progress.” Doiron has quarterback rating of 156.7 in five games.
Thinking about DeSoto, number two and Allen, number three in Texas: “I don’t worry about other Texas ranked schools. We have a hard enough time worrying about the teams in our district. We focus on the next game. We worry about all the other stuff at the end of the regular season.” The Tigers are ranked number seven in Texas.
Taylor, Seven Lakes, Strake Jesuit, Cinco Ranch and Memorial all present improving teams, especially Seven Lakes. The Spartans are undefeated and lead the district in team defense. “There is not an easy game left on our district schedule for the rest of the season.”
Getting Everybody Well is Main Concern for the Katy Tigers

team is tied for first place with Memorial HS in District 19-5A. The Lady Mustangs lost to Cinco Ranch, 25-21, 25-17, 22-25, leaving both Katy and Memorial with 6-1 records. The Tigers defeated Morton Ranch 25-19, 25-18, 25-19. Madison McConnell led the Tigers with 14 kills.
Coach Karen Paxton describes her team as hard working. “We are a strong passing and defensive team, and we worked really hard on creating more offensive plays throughout the offseason, preseason and district. Players came together in the off season and agreed on what they wanted to accomplish this year.”
Madison McConnell, Channing Hankins and Zoe Hodges have had a significant part in getting the Lady Tigers to where they are at now. “They are our top three kill leaders every night,” says Paxton. “Amy Miller and Bailey McFarland set our offense.
“Zoe, a senior, has a lot of court experience, a very consistent player, and sees the floor really well. She is the kind
of player that can calm everyone down on the court.
“Madison McConnell is definitely an impact player.” She is a sophomore this year and played varsity last year as a freshman. “Not only being our cheerleader every night, she is a powerful player, brings a lot of intensity to the court.”
Paxton describes McConnell as 5’ 11” tall and physically strong. “Height can be an advantage but not always. Her speed, her quickness, her vertical, are all assets. She is just a smart player.”
Hodges and McConnell were Pre-season Greater Houston picks.
“We were young last year and had quite a few players returning from last year’s team,” said Paxton. The Lady Tigers added seven new players. “The players we added bring not only some depth in certain positions but challenge some of our players. The kids who joined the team this year are hard working kids and overall team players.”

Cinco Ranch Cougars defeated the Mayde Creek Rams, 30-0 Saturday evening at Rhodes Stadium. Head Coach Don Clayton in a post game interview praised his players for their perseverance and noted some of their weaknesses
“We had some uncharacteristic mistakes,” said Coach Clayton. “We just didn’t hit our receivers when we needed to, receivers that were open. Early on we missed a few tackles here and there that extended drives for Mayde Creek.”
Luke Klingler started the game as quarterback for the Cougars, quickly taking the team in for the first Cinco Ranch touchdown on an 8 yard pass to Denzell Bates. PAT by Jared Barrera put the Cougars on top, 7-0.
On the next two Cinco Ranch possessions Klingler’s magic passing touch was missing in action. Six of his next attempts were off target. Coach Clayton sent David Coffman in to reignite the Cougar offense.
“After that first drive I didn’t have anything going for me and coach took me out,” said Klingler. “David did a great job.” Under the direction of Coffman the Cougars added a Barrera field goal. At 2:54 in the second quarter Clayton put Klingler back into the game. At 2:53 Klingler connected on 16 yard pass to Sam Straughan for a TD; at 01:06 he connected with Blake Hirsch for another TD. “We caught fire a little bit right before the end of the first half,” said Clayton, “took advantage of a couple mistakes, had a good drive down field in about a minute or so and scored.” In the third quarter, Klingler hit Sam Straughan for 30 yards for Klingler’s third passing touchdown of the evening.
“We struggled a little bit with our run game last week and we decided we were going to pick it back up with the pass,” said Coffman. “We came out with full confidence in our guys. They got open and we got them the ball.”
Mayde Creek could have made the game much closer if they hadn’t ruined drives with fumbles and penalties. In the first quarter on 14 plays the Rams were penalized twice and fumbled three times. Several times in the game the Rams sustained long drives only to erase their work through fumbles. In the fourth quarter the rams blocked a fourth down Cinco Ranch punt and returned the ball to Cougar six yard line. After four attempts the Rams were unable to push the ball across the goal line.
“The kids (Cougars) responded when we had our back against the wall,” said Clayton, “did a good job of keeping them out of the end zone.”
“Mayde Creek is a good solid team,” continued Clayton. “They have a lot of young kids, they are coached well, and the kids played extremely hard. They made us work for everything we got.”
Cinco Ranch has four remaining games on their regular season schedule – Taylor, Seven Lakes, Katy and Strake Jesuit. Providing the Cougars play like they are capable of doing, they should be in the playoffs.
Will the next game against Taylor be an easy game? “We would like to say that,” said Klingler. “Two years ago we blew them out and last year was a real close game that we won at the end. We just have to take it week by week; you never know what’s going to happen.”

The Mayde Creek High School Martinette Drill Team began the year with a community service project benefitting Special Pals, a low cost shot, spay and neuter clinic and animal shelter. They are very crowded with animals needing forever homes and often times are lacking in supplies to take care of these future pets.
