Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world (John 1: 29).”

Words from John the Baptist as he rec-ognized Jesus as the Messiah, the Anointed one who came to save the people of Israel. A “title” meant for Jesus since He is the Son of God and the savior of the world. This sentence speaks of Jesus being the paschal lamb who will save Israel. Which parallels the lambs were lead to slaughter during the Passover celebration and Jesus will mirror the same sacrifice with His death on the cross. And John recognizes that sacrifice when he speaks about Jesus. Because Jesus' mission is to save the world from sin. We have just concluded our Christmas cele-bration remembering that Jesus came as a Child, both God and man to make our salvation possible. And these words of John should have meaning to us dur-ing the Ordinary Time in the Church. We hear these words every time we come to the liturgy of the Eu-charist, Mass. These words are spoken by the priest as he elevates the Body and Blood of Jesus together after we sing the Lamb of God. Where all of us are invited, as a community, to the banquet of Christ and these words are an act of humility referring to this gospel of John (General Instruction of the Roman Missal 84). This sentence is a statement of recognition of who Jesus is when we receive Him in the Eucharist. But, do these words really impact our lives every time we hear and say them in Mass? Or are we just following the motions and obligations at Mass. Jesus came to save all of us and to sacrifice himself for our sins so that we can have eternal life and be united with the Father again. These words of John have great meaning in our lives of faith and need to im-pact our entire Being: mind, body and soul. These words are a recognition of Jesus as God and should help us grow in our understanding of Jesus. Jesus is the Lamb of God who has taken away our sins. Do we trust in Him like John the Baptist or are we still searching for Him? Blessings, Fr. Frank Hernandez

Bendiciones, Fr. Frank Hernandez
