Las aguas de esta fuente del s. XVI fueron las primerascon denominación en España. Se enviaban envasadasen jarras lacradas y selladas. Junto a la fuente aún selevantan los dos baños del s. XVII, uno para mujeres yotro para hombres.

The waters from this 16th century fountain were thefirst to be awarded a denomination of origin in Spain.They were sent in sealed and stamped pitchers. Nextto the fountain the two 17th century baths remain, onefor men and the other for women.

Declarados Bien de Interés Cultural, se localizan en lafinca veraniega del General. En ellos se aúna el gustoracionalista geométrico francés y el romanticismo deci-monónico anglosajón.

Declared a Site of Cultural Interest, they are to be foundin the summer residence of the General of the samename. They are a combination of the geometric rationa-list French style and 19th century English romanticism.

El ascenso a esta Necrópolis de la edad del Cobre,declarada Bien de Interés Cultural, se ve recompensa-do con unas extraordinarias vistas de tierras cordobe-sas, malagueñas y granadinas.

The ascent to this Copper Age necropolis, declared aSite of Cultural Interest, is well worth the effort for theextraordinary views over parts of the provinces ofCordoba, Malaga, and Granada.

This constitutes one of the principal arteries of theroutes which make up the Andalusí legacy. The routefollows the path taken in 1829 by the romanticAmerican writer who was fascinated by the exoticismand exuberance of the vestiges of the Arabic culturewhich he found in the villages and towns on his jour-ney from Seville to Granada.The legendary aspect of the route is heightened by itpassing through areas which in the 19th century werehome to famous bandoleros, and particularly thelegendary José María El Tempranillo.This route is without doubt, a perfect excuse to disco-ver the beautiful landscapes and surroundings ofLoja.

Constituye una de las arterias principales de las rutasque forman parte de El Legado Andalusí. El itinerariodiscurre por el camino que hizo en 1829 el románticoescritor norteamericano que le da nombre a la ruta, fas-cinado por el exotismo y la exuberancia de los vestigiosárabes que encontró en los pueblos que unían las des-lumbrantes ciudades de Sevilla y Granada.El tono legendario del recorrido se acentúa, además, alatravesar comarcas que en el pasado siglo destacaronpor la presencia de bandoleros, entre los que destaca elfamoso José María El Tempranillo.Esta propuesta es, sin lugar a dudas, una excusa per-fecta para descubrir los paisajes y el entorno privilegia-do que ofrece Loja.

RUTA DE LOS MIRADORES ROUTE OF THE MIRADORS

This route visits all the miradors or viewing towers in

the town of Loja itself and offers an excellent opportu-

nity to discover its rich monumental and natural herita-

ge. An interesting aspect of these miradors is that

each one is dedicated to a particular historical figure

who spent time in the municipality.

Este itinerario discurre por todos los miradores situados

dentro del casco urbano de Loja. A través de esta ruta

podremos acercarnos al rico patrimonio monumental y

natural de la ciudad. Una peculiaridad de estos miradores

es que cada uno de ellos está dedicado a algún persona-

je histórico que ha estado vinculado con el municipio.

El panorama cultural de Loja es am plio y muy completo.

Además de sus numerosas fiestas, en las que destaca su

Semana Santa, declarada de Interés Turístico Nacional

de Andalucía, la localidad cuenta con el Museo de la

Alcazaba (con valiosos fondos), el Centro de

Interpretación Histórico y el Centro de Interpretación

Ambiental en Riofrío, que ofrece una interesante perspec-

tiva sobre los recursos naturales de la población. El

Centro de Interpretación del Agua se sumará pronto a

estos espacios temáticos y en él se pondrá de relieve la

importante relación entre Loja y el agua.

La agenda cultural lojeña también contempla numerosos

eventos, conciertos y festivales, como el Festival

Internacional de Artes Escénicas “Va de Calle” o el

Palma Rock, que se celebran a lo largo del año y que se

suman a las numerosas exposiciones que tienen lugar

tanto en espacios públicos como en salas privadas.

The cultural life of Loja is varied and comprehensive.

Apart from its numerous fiestas, including, of course,

Easter Week, which has been declared an Event of

National Tourist Interest in Andalusia, the municipa-

lity contains the Alcazaba Museum (with its nume-

rous invaluable exhibits), and the Centre for

Historical Interpretation and the Environmental

Interpretation Centre in Riofrío, which provides an

interesting perspective on the area’s natural resour-

ces. A Centre for the Interpretation of Water is soon

to be opened which will demonstrate the relationship

between Loja and this important natural resource.

The cultural calendar also includes numerous events,

concerts and festivals which take place throughout

the year including the “Va de Calle” International

Performing Arts Festival, and Palma Rock. There

are also a whole range of exhibitions which are held

in both public and private spaces.

El histórico edificio del Caserón de los Alcaides

Cristianos, situado dentro del Recinto la Alcazaba, sirve

de sede al Museo Histórico de la ciudad. Sus fondos,

de gran valor histórico, se exhiben en dos grandes salas

divididas, a su vez, en cinco espacios temáticos.

• Bajo tus pies... la memoria. Reúne lo mejor de la

colección municipal, además de una maqueta recons-

tructiva de la ciudad andalusí y una serie de grabados

(ss. XVI-XIX) y fotografías (ss. XIX-XX) que permiten una

visión retrospectiva de la evolución urbanística de Loja.

• Con nombre y apellidos. Agrupa material escultórico,

pictórico, honorífico, heráldico y protocolario de la Casa

Consistorial de Loja, así como distintos personajes ilus-

tres vinculados con la ciudad.

• Está escrito. Se exponen algunos de los documentos

paleográficos más importantes del Archivo Histórico

Municipal, junto a otros elementos tecnológicos más

recientes, relacionados con los medios de comunicación

y difusión social.

• En olor de Santidad. Colección de enseres relaciona-

dos con la Semana Santa lojeña, además de obras pictó-

ricas y un magnífico retablo del s. XIX.

• Polvo eres. Se muestran distintos ajuares funerarios de

naturaleza arqueológica (ibéricos y visigodos), además de

la reproducción de un enterramiento prehistórico y foto-

grafías de las necrópolis de Sierra Martilla y Las Vinuesas.

The historic Caserón de los Alcaides Cristianos buil-

ding, located inside the precinct of the Alcazaba,

houses the town’s History Museum. Its collection,

which is of significant historic value, is displayed in

two large rooms which are in turn divided into five dif-

ferent themed spaces.

Ground floor

• A glimpse of the past. Features the best of the

municipal collection including a model reproducing

the original Andalusí city, as well as a series of

etchings (16th – 19th centuries) and photographs

(19th- 20th centuries) offering a retrospective view of

Loja’s urban development.

• Illustrious names. Features sculptures, paintings,

honorary titles, coats of arms and objects of Town

Hall protocol, as well as portraits of illustrious histo-

ric figures with links to the town.

First floor

• It is written. Exhibition of some of the most impor-

tant palaeographic documents of the Municipal

Historical Archive alongside other more modern tech-

nological elements related to means of communica-

tion and public information.

• A halo of Sanctity. Collection of objects related to

the local Easter celebrations, as well as paintings and

a magnificent altarpiece from the 19th century.

• Dust thou art. Display featuring a series of funerary

objects (from the Iberian and Visigoth periods) as well

as the reproduction of a prehistoric burial and photo-

graphs of the necropolises of Sierra Martilla and Las

Vinuesas

Situado en Riofrío y rodeado de un entorno natural pri-

vilegiado, este centro, sede también del Coto

Intensivo de Pesca, trata de dar a conocer, en su

exposición permanente, los ciclos del agua en Loja y

Riofrío, así como la creación de los ríos, la vegetación

y fauna típica de estos espacios. Cuenta además con

un Jardín Botánico con plantas autóctonas, un salón

de usos múltiples para charlas y ponencias medioam-

bientales y un pequeño laboratorio.

the centre, which also houses the Intensive Fishing

Reserve, has a permanent exhibition featuring infor-

mation on the water cycles in both Loja and Riofrío,

botanical garden with indigenous plants, a multipur-

pose room for lectures and environmental conferen-

ces, and a small laboratory.

se reúnen para comer y beber hasta altas horas de la

the streets and locals gather around them to eat and

drink until the early hours of the morning.

CARNAVALEs uno de los más famosos de la provincia gracias a la

larga tradición de su concurso de agrupaciones (mur-

gas, comparsas, chirigotas...) y al animado y colorido

pasacalles.

One of the most popular in the province thanks to its

long standing tradition of competitions (murgas,

SAN MARCOSFamiliares y amigos salen al campo el 25 de abril para

celebrar este día en el que se degusta el típico “hornazo”.

day by going out into the country and partaking of the

typical “hornazo”.

ROMERÍA DE LA AMISTADDesde hace 20 años es tradición que el 1 de mayo los

lojeños salgan en carrozas, carretas y caballos y acom-

pañen a San Isidro Labrador hasta un paraje campestre

donde pasan una jornada de diversión.

For the last 20 years, it has been the tradition on the

1st of May to accompany Saint Isidro Labrador on a

pilgrimage in carriages, carts, and on horseback to

spend the day celebrating in the countryside.

DÍA DE LA CRUZEl 3 de mayo los niños, con ayuda de los mayores, ela-

boran cruces con diversos materiales y salen con ellas

a las calles a pedir dinero. También se celebran concur-

sos para elegir las más originales.

On the 3rd of May, children, aided by adults, make

crosses from various materials and take them out into

the street to collect money. Competitions are also

held to select the most original crosses.

FERIA CHICATiene lugar la primera semana de junio y es similar a la

Feria que se celebra a finales de agosto.

Takes place during the first week of June and is simi-

lar to the Feria which is held at the end of August.

FERIA GRANDECasetas, alumbrado, atracciones infantiles, corridas de

toros, el festival flamenco de la Volaera, grandes actua-

ciones y competiciones deportivas son los ingredientes

de esta fiesta que se celebra a finales de agosto y que

tiene su día grande en la segunda jornada de feria.

Marquees, lights, fairground attractions, bullfights,

the Volaera flamenco festival, concerts, and sports

competitions are the main ingredients of this fiesta

which is held at the end of August. The second day of

the feria is considered to be the most important.

Enclavada en el estrecho valle que forma el río Genil al

abrirse paso entre la Sierra Gorda y el Monte Hacho,

Loja ha visto cómo su patrimonio medioambiental se

ha convertido en uno de sus mayores recursos turísti-

cos. Especial protagonismo cobra en su entorno el

agua, que la roca caliza filtra en la Sierra de Loja,

haciendo brotar numerosos manantiales y más de 100

fuentes en el municipio que configuran la Ruta del

Agua. A su indudable valor medioambiental hay que

unir su idoneidad como escenario para todo tipo de

actividades de turismo activo, desde el senderismo y

la escalada hasta la pesca deportiva y el vuelo libre,

actividad esta última en la que Loja es un referente

internacional.

Set in the narrow valley formed by the river Genil as it

passes through the Sierra Gorda and the Monte

Hacho, Loja’s environmental heritage has become

one of its greatest tourist assets. Of special relevance

to the natural surroundings are the waters which are

filtered through the limestone outcrops of the Sierra

de Loja, forming numerous springs and creating the

source of the more than 100 fountains in the munici-

pality, which are featured in the Water Route. As well

as its undoubted environmental value, the area provi-

des an ideal setting for a wide range of outdoor acti-

vities, from walking and climbing, to fishing or hang

gliding, the latter being particularly important since

Loja is internationally known as an ideal site.

XVIII en su naci-miento), donde el visitante podrá contemplar una pisci-factoría desde el exterior, ver una piscina con truchas yesturiones, degustar estos pescados en los restauran-tes de la zona, pescar en el Coto Intensivo de Pesca,visitar el Centro de Interpretación Ambiental y com-prar caviar con Denominación de Origen de Riofrío (pre-mio al Mejor Caviar del Mundo 2005).

A picturesque landscape crossed by the Salado andRiofrío rivers (the latter featuring 18th century water millsnear its source) where visitors can visit the fish farm andobserve the pool containing trout and sturgeon. Theycan also sample the fish in local restaurants, go anglingthemselves in the Intensive Fishing Reserve, visit theEnvironmental Interpretation Centre, or buy caviar withthe Riofrio Denomination of Origin (awarded the prizefor the Best Caviar in the World in 2005).

As well as affording magnificent panoramic views ofthe provinces of Cordoba, Malaga and Granada andthe Iznájar reservoir, this megalithic complex containsthe valuable archaeological remains of a necropolisfrom the Copper Age, with up to three types of burials:simple, in caves, and in megaron-style complexes. Allof them share the unusual aspect of being partially orcompletely excavated from the rock.

LOS INFIERNOS DE LOJA

LAS CHORRERAS

Este Monumento Natural tiene su origen en los acuíferosde naturaleza kárstica de las sierras de Loja y el Hacho,los cuales acaban en el río Genil desde los manantiales delManzanil y el Frontil. Si espectacular resulta admirar por labarriada de La Esperanza la llamada Cola del Caballo,cascada en la que el agua salva un desnivel de 8 m. de altu-ra, no lo es menos pasear por los Infiernos desde abajocontemplando, por Los Molinillos, los travertinos de capri-chosas formas.

The origins of this Natural Monument lie in the kars-tic aquifers of the sierras of Loja and El Hacho whichrun into the Genil from springs in Manzanil and elFrontil. The Cola del Caballo, a waterfall with an 8metre drop in the Barrio of La Esperanza is spectacu-lar, but equally breathtaking is the walk beneath theInfiernos to see the strange shapes of the travertineterraces near Los Molinillos.

This karstic formation with vantage points affordingpanoramic views of the whole area is a home to birdsof prey, mountain goats and wild cats, as well as theSpanish ribbed newt, an endemic species which canbe spotted in the Charco del Negro. Its numerouscavities, fractures and vertical caves (such as the wellknown Cueva Horadada) are ideal for practisingpotholing, an adventure sport which can be comple-mented with other outdoor activities such as walkingor gliding (from either of the two take-off sites). It isalso possible to visit the Wind Farm.

Loja es una ciudad rica en manantiales, ríos, arroyos ylagunas, repartiéndose por su término municipal más deun centenar de fuentes. Las más emblemáticas tanto delcasco urbano como de fuera de él protagonizan este iti-nerario turístico-natural. En el centro histórico existen42 fuentes, siendo la más destacada la Fuente de laMora o de los 25 Caños, en el barrio de la Alfaguara yjunto al nacimiento del Borbollote (El lavadero). En elentorno la ruta discurre por el Manantial del Frontil, laFuente de San Pedro, la Fuente del Paraíso, la FuenteSanta y Las Chorreras.

The town of Loja has numerous springs, rivers, streamsand pools, and there are more than one hundred foun-tains distributed throughout the municipality and thetown’s more emblematic examples are the main theme ofthis nature-tourist itinerary. In the historic centre thereare 42 fountains, including the well known Fuente de laMora or the 25 Caños, which is located in the Barrio dela Alfaguara, next to the source of the Borbollote (theWashouse). In the outskirts, the route visits the El Frontilspring, as well as the fountains of San Pedro, DelParaíso, Santa, and Las Chorreras.

This route is dedicated to the memory of the anony-

mous people who devoted a great part of their lives to

the thankless task of supplying fish to the town.

Negotiating the sierra they walked back and forth

along the paths which linked Loja and Torre del Mar,

although sometimes they used to meet halfway

(Ventas de Zafarraya). Leading their mules at a slow

pace along the hard tracks, they transported their

loads in the early hours of the morning to avoid the

heat. Today this tourist route aims at highlighting the

natural riches of both the municipality itself and the

Sierra de Loja as a whole.

Esta ruta pretende recuperar la memoria de aquellas per-

sonas anónimas que dedicaron buena parte de su vida a

la ardua tarea de abastecer de pescado a la ciudad loje-

ña. Recorrían a través de la sierra los caminos que unían

Loja y Torre del Mar en ambos sentidos, aunque en

ocasiones los encuentros se producían a mitad de cami-

no (Ventas de Zafarraya). A lomos de mulos y con paso

ligero por duros caminos, la carga era transportada apro-

vechando las horas frescas del día. Hoy este itinerario

lúdico pretende dar a conocer las excelencias naturales

que ofrecen el municipio y la Sierra de Loja.

El caudal de aguas frías y cristalinas del Riofrío reúne lascaracterísticas óptimas para la supervivencia de la tru-cha ya sea en libertad (protegida por las vedas) o bienen zonas destinadas a la pesca. A diferencia de otroscotos, el Coto Intensivo de Pesca de Riofrío está abier-to los 365 días del año (excepto los lunes no festivos).Para convalidar los permisos de pesca españoles oeuropeos en Andalucía, podrán contactar con elPatronato Municipal de Turismo de Loja y les informaránsobre el trámite a seguir.

The cold crystalline waters of the river Riofrío have theideal characteristics for the survival of trout, whether inthe wild (protected by periods when fishing is prohibi-ted) or in designated fishing areas. Unlike other fishingreserves, Riofrío’s Intensive Fishing Reserve is open allyear round (except on Mondays unless they coincidewith a Bank Holiday).
