Why Doesn’t God Always Heal?

If God can heal us, why doesn’t he? Why isn’t it always his will to do so? One answer to this ques on is found in the spiritual discipline and training that can result from facing illness and adversity. Scripture asks, “Have you forgo en the exhorta on which addresses you as sons?—‘My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor lose cour-age when you are punished by him. For the Lord disciplines him whom he loves, and chas ses every son whom he receives’ [Prov. 3:11–12]. It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is trea ng you as sons; for what son is there whom his father does not discipline? If you are le without discipline, in which all have par cipated, then you are illegi -mate children and not sons. Besides this, we have had earthly fathers to discipline us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live? For they disciplined us for a short me at their pleasure, but he disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness. For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant; later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it” (Heb. 12:5–11).

The Value of Suffering Some mes God allows us to undergo sickness as a form of discipline and training in righteousness. God o en permits these trials for our sanc fica on, as Paul himself learned when he prayed that God would remove from him an angel of Satan who was afflic ng him: “And to keep me from being too elated by the abundance of revela ons, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger [Greek: angelos] of Satan, to harass me, to keep me from being too elated. Three mes I be-sought the Lord about this, that it should leave me; but he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weak-ness.’ I will all the more gladly boast of my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest upon me” (2 Cor. 12:7–9). Even though we must face a certain amount of suffering and afflic-

on in this life, we know God’s grace is sufficient to sustain us. All of God’s graces, including physical health, are bestowed to lead to the salva on of our souls. The Catholic Church teaches that the sacrament brings “the restora on of health, if it is conducive to the salva on of his soul” (CCC 1532). God also uses our suffering to help others. If Paul had not become ill while on his first missionary journey and been forced to stop traveling, he would not have preached to the Gala ans, for he tells them, “You know it was because of a bodily ailment that I preached the gospel to you at first” (Gal. 4:13). If he had not preached to the Gala ans, he would not have later wri en them the epistle that appears in our New Testament. God used Paul’s illness to bring salva on to the Gala ans and bring us a work of Scripture, through which we are s ll receiving benefits from God. This is just one example of how God used suffering to bring about good. Therefore, if we suffer, we should look upon it as an opportunity for good, such as by offering up our sufferings for our own sanc fica-

on and for our departed brothers and sisters in Christ. This applies also to the physical suffering of death, which will come for each of us one day. The Bible reminds us, “As for man, his days are like grass; he flourishes like a flower of the field; for the wind passes over it, and it is gone, and its place knows it no more” (Ps. 103:15–16).

The “Last Rites” Though the psalmist teaches us to ponder our mortality, he immediate-ly comforts us by saying, “But the steadfast love of the Lord is from

everlas ng to everlas ng upon those who fear him, and his righteous-ness to children’s children, to those who keep his covenant and re-member to do his commandments” (Ps. 103:17–18). In his steadfast love for us, the Lord gives us the sacraments involved in the last rites to comfort us in our final days and prepare us for the journey ahead. “These include penance (or confession), confirma on (when lacking), anoin ng of the sick . . . and Via cum (which is meant to be the last recep on of Communion for the journey from this life to eternity). . . . The present ritual orders these sacraments in two ways. The ‘con nuous rites of penance and anoin ng’ include: Introductory Rites, Liturgy of Penance, Liturgy of Confirma on, Liturgy of Anoin ng, Liturgy of Via cum, and Concluding Rites. The ‘rite for emergencies’ includes the sacrament of penance, Apostolic Pardon, Lord’s Prayer, Communion as Via cum, prayer before anoin ng, anoin ng, conclud-ing prayer, blessing, sign of peace” (Fr. Peter Stravinskas, Catholic Ency-clopedia, 572). The most important part of the last rites is the recep on of the Lord in one’s final Communion, also called “Via cum” (La n = that which you take on the road, i.e., provisions for a journey). This special Com-munion prepares us to travel with the Lord on the final part of our jour-ney. The comfort of via cum has been valued by Chris ans since the beginning of Church history. The first ecumenical council, held at Ni-caea in 325, decreed: “Concerning the depar ng, the ancient canonical law is s ll to be maintained, to wit, that, if any man be at the point of death, he must not be deprived of the last and most indispensable via cum” (canon 13). Having repented of our sins and received recon-cilia on, we travel with the Lord Jesus out of this earthly life and to eternal happiness with him in heaven. From the earliest mes, the sacrament of the anoin ng of the sick was cherished among Chris ans not only in immediate danger of death but even at the beginning sign of danger from illness or old age. A ser-mon of Caesar of Arles (c. A.D. 470–542) contains the following: “As o en as some infirmity overtakes a man, let him who is ill receive the body and blood of Christ; let him humbly and in faith ask the presbyters for blessed oil, to anoint his body, so that what was wri en may be fulfilled in him: ‘Is anyone among you sick? Let him bring in the presby-ters, and let them pray over him, anoin ng him with oil; and the prayer of faith will save the sick man, and the Lord will raise him up; and if he be in sins, they will be forgiven him. . . . See to it, brethren, that whoev-er is ill hasten to the church, both that he may receive health of body and will merit to obtain the forgiveness of his sins” (Sermons 13[325]:3).

John Chrysostom “The priests of Judaism had power to cleanse the body from leprosy—or rather, not to cleanse it at all, but to declare a person as having been cleansed. . . . Our priests have received the power not of trea ng with the leprosy of the body, but with spiritual uncleanness; not of declaring cleansed, but of actually cleansing. . . . Priests accomplish this not only by teaching and admonishing, but also by the help of prayer. Not only at the me of our regenera on [in bap sm], but even a erward, they have the authority to forgive sins: ‘Is there anyone among you sick? Let him call in the priests of the church, and let them pray over him, anoin ng him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith shall save the sick man, and the Lord shall raise him up, and if he has commi ed sins, he shall be forgiven’” (On the Priesthood 3:6:190ff [A.D. 387]). ¿Por qué Dios no sana siempre? Si Dios puede sanarnos, ¿por qué él no? ¿Por qué no es siempre su voluntad hacerlo? Una respuesta a esta pregunta se encuentra en la disciplina espiritual y el entrenamiento que puede resultar de enfrentar la enfermedad y la adversidad. La Escritura pregunta: "¿Han olvidado la exhortación que se dirige a ustedes como hijos?" "Hijo mío, no tengas en poco la disciplina del Señor, ni pierdas valor cuando eres cas gado por él. Porque el Señor lo disciplina a quien ama, y cas ga a cada hijo que recibe "[Prov. 3: 11-12]. Es por la disciplina que debes soportar. Dios te trata como a hijos; porque ¿qué hijo hay allí a quien su padre no disciplina? Si te dejan sin disciplina, en la que todos han par cipado, entonces eres un hijo ilegí mo y no un hijo. Además de esto, hemos tenido padres terrenales para disciplinarnos y los respetamos. ¿No deberíamos estar mucho más sujetos al Padre de los espíritus y vivir? Porque ellos nos disciplinaban por un corto empo a su gusto, pero él nos disciplina para nuestro bien, para que podamos compar r su san-

dad. Por el momento, toda disciplina parece dolorosa en lugar de placentera; luego da el fruto pacífico de la jus cia a los que han sido entrenados por ella "(Hebreos 12: 5-11).

El valor del sufrimiento Algunas veces Dios nos permite experimentar la enfermedad como una forma de disciplina y entrenamiento en jus cia. Dios a menudo permite estas pruebas para nuestra san ficación, como el mismo Pablo aprendió cuando oró para que Dios le quitara a un ángel de Satanás que lo estaba afligiendo: "Y para evitar que me deslumbrara la abun-dancia de revelaciones, se me dio una espina yo en la carne, un men-sajero [griego: angelos] de Satanás, para hos garme, para evitar que yo esté demasiado eufórico. Tres veces le supliqué al Señor acerca de esto, que debería dejarme; pero él me dijo: "Mi gracia es suficiente para , porque mi poder se perfecciona en la debilidad." Con mayor alegría me jactaré de mis debilidades, para que el poder de Cristo descanse sobre mí "(2 Corin os 12) : 7-9). Aunque debemos enfrentar una cierta can dad de sufrimiento y aflicción en esta vida, sabemos que la gracia de Dios es suficiente para sostenernos. Todas las gracias de Dios, incluida la salud sica, se otor-gan para conducir a la salvación de nuestras almas. La Iglesia Católica enseña que el sacramento trae "la restauración de la salud, si es con-ducente a la salvación de su alma" (CIC 1532). Dios también usa nuestro sufrimiento para ayudar a otros. Si no hubiera predicado a los Gálatas, no habría escrito más tarde la epístola que aparece en nuestro Nuevo Testamento. Los "santos Oleos" Aunque el salmista nos enseña a reflexionar sobre nuestra mortalidad, inmediatamente nos consuela diciendo: "Pero el amor firme del Señor es desde siempre y para siempre sobre los que le temen, y su jus cia para los hijos de los hijos, para los que guardan su pacto y recuerda hacer sus mandamientos "(Sal 103: 17-18). En su amor constante por nosotros, el Señor nos da los sacramentos involucrados en los Santos Oleospara consolarnos en nuestros días finales y prepararnos para el viaje que tenemos por delante. "Estos incluyen penitencia (o confesión), confirmación (cuando falta), unción de los enfermos. . . y el Viá co (que debe ser la úl ma recepción de la Comunión para el viaje de esta vida a la eternidad). . . . Habiéndose arrepen do de nuestros pecados y recibido la reconciliación, viajamos con el Señor Jesús fuera de esta vida terrenal y a la felicidad eterna con él en el cie-lo. Desde los primeros empos, el sacramento de la unción de los enfermos era apreciado entre los cris anos no solo en peligro inmedi-ato de muerte, sino incluso al principio, como señal de peligro por enfermedad o vejez. Un sermón de César de Arles (c.A.D. 470-542) con ene lo siguiente: "Cada vez que una enfermedad alcance al hom-bre, el que está enfermo recibirá el cuerpo y la sangre de Cristo; que humildemente y con fe pida a los presbíteros aceite bendito, que unge su cuerpo, para que lo que está escrito se cumpla en él: '¿Hay alguno entre vosotros que esté enfermo? Deje que traiga a los presbíteros, y que oren por él, ungiéndole con aceite; y la oración de fe salvará al enfermo, y el Señor lo levantará; y si él está en pecados, se le perdona-rá. . . . Mirad, hermanos, que el que está enfermo se apresure a ir a la iglesia, tanto para recibir salud del cuerpo como para merecer el perdón de sus pecados "(Sermones 13 [325]: 3).

Juan Crisóstomo "Los sacerdotes del judaísmo tenían poder para limpiar el cuerpo de la lepra, o más bien, no para limpiarlo en absoluto, sino para declarar a una persona como limpiada. . . . Nuestros sacerdotes han recibido el poder de no tratar con la lepra del cuerpo, sino con la impureza espir-itual; no de declarar limpiado, sino de limpieza en realidad. . . . Come learn about St. John Paul II’s theology of the Body

The Theology of the Body is perhaps Pope St John Paul II’s most endearing work. In it he uses his years of expe-rience working with young couples, and Scripture, to elevate human love to the supernatural, thereby enrich-ing such pressing topics as Marriage, Celibacy, Chas ty and Da ng. To explore his teachings Sacred Heart/St Benedict’s Re-spect life Commi ee is offering a 10 week study Thurs-day evenings at 7pm at St Benedict’s Hall from Sept 20th to November 29th. WINGS about to start this year Women In God's Spirit (WINGS) will begin their Fall session Monday 8/27, 9:30 AM at St Benedict Hall. You are invited to join us for fellowship and guest speakers.
