Then they abandoned their nets and followed Jesus. Every contact we have with another person is an invitation. A co-worker pops into the room and says: “Do you have a minute?” Someone arrives on the doorstep wanting you to take part in a survey. A friend texts you with an offer of tickets for a movie tonight. An email initiates a conversation with a long-lost acquaintance. Maybe a stranger speaks to you on the train. In all of these overtures, a choice needs to be made. Are we available to this relationship, or not? When Jesus walks along the shore of the Galilee, he finds what one would expect to see: fishermen plying their trade. Jesus issues an invitation that goes much deeper than the average one. It’s not “Got a minute?” but more like “What are you doing with the rest of your life?” Four men that day made an astonishing reply: “We’re not doing anything that we wouldn’t trade for the grand adventure of life with you.” How many other people received the invitation to follow, and how many replied: “No, thanks”? Imagine Jesus walking into the place where you are and inviting you to follow. What might you cheerfully abandon, and what would hold you back?
