Task 2-Essay Sane m Esra Koyupinar

Should factual products contain bias ?

Oxford Dictionary.com :Inclination or prejudice for or against one person or group, especially in a way considered to be unfair:there was evidence of bias agains black applicants the bias towards younger people in recruitment.A bias opinion is when someone favours another side and m akes influences what there doing based on there opinions. In m y opinion including bias opinions into factual writing is wrong and ironically does not fit into the criteria of 'Factual WritingI also believe that it is unprofessional for a journalist or a author to create a piece of factual writing with influences from their own opinions instead of actual facts and informations because by doing this it would it would also effect the audiences ideas and also mislead there ideas about the topic. It is also important that the journalist to be able to identify the difference between including actual facts rather then including their own opinions into a piece of work. The reason I think this is because by including their own opinion into a piece of factual work the audience m ay not recognise that the article is based on opinions and therefore will believe what they will read.

The topic that I have chosen to analyse to show the difference between bias and non bias articles is the legalisation of m arijuana. I have taken both articles from the internet and I have also tried to choose a article that is featured on the first page of the search engine as there is a high chance that the audience are m ore likely to pick something from the first page.

The first unbiased article I looked at was featured on a website called 'Marijuana: An Unbiased Analysis' which had been created by a 18 year old college student who is trying to explain how and why Marijuana has beco me an illegal drug and the controversy that has been brought up due to this drug. Firstly the student has included a brief description of the drug and how it is consu med following with the history of the drug which is then concluded with why the drug remains to be illegal in the m odern day. Throughout the whole article the student has remained a m utual stance and does not reflect his own opinion and frequently reference back to historical facts. By setting out his article like this he has been able to prove his point without including his own opinion but with actual and persuasive facts which m akes the over all article m ore trust worthy.

The article that I choose to analyse in this subject is a article is based on a website where the public are able to write their argu ments and sub mit on the website for further debates with other public m e mbers. In this article the language is set m ore informal and is told straight from the writers point, in this article the writer has first explains how he thinks that the use of drugs is wrong and shares some of his passed experience with drugs but then he

follows this argu ment with his opinion of how he believes m arijuana is a safer drug to consu me by saying 的 f I were to ask you whether alcohol or m arijuana was m ore harmful to the health of users, m ost of you would reply - "Alcohol is worse." Throughout the whole article the writer shares his opinion with the public to bring across the point that m arijuana is safe drug compared to the rest but whilst discussing this he does not include any genuine facts or professional information and tries to persuade the audience just based on what he is saying.

The difference between the bias and unbiased is that the unbiased article allows the reader to be able to decide on what their own opinion is about the topic whereas the bias article forces the writers opinion to the reader and tries to direct the readers opinion to be the same as theres. Another difference between the two articles are how the unbiased co mes across m ore professional and uses m uch kore ofter language which doesn 稚 see m to harsh and outgoing co mpared to the bias article which see ms m ore aggressive to read as the writer has tried to get his opinion across so passionately which has turned the over all article to a rant m ore then a article. The bias article was also very casual, whitest reading the article it was very personal and very poor quality co mpared to the unbiased article because the unbiased article had m ore structure to it and included m ainly historical facts on the subject which also m ade the article m ore educational and m ore enjoyable to read.

In conclusion I believe that factual writing should not contain any kind of bias. The reason I believe this is that when you look at the exa mples that are provided in you are able to see that when you see a the disadvantages that happen when bias opinions are included in the article and how it can be of putting for m ost audiences to read. W hen you co mpare the bias article to the unbiased article you are able to notice when that you are actually able to gain knowledge from the unbiased article and it I a m uch m ore enjoyable read for the audience.
