It’s causing your business damage in lost sales and missed opportunities. I’d encourage you to stop immediately and re-think your marketing and sales. Are you trying to attract everybody? It’s a common problem amongst small business marketers who haven’t defined their market. Stand on George St, Sydney or a major pedestrian street near you. Spend just 15 minutes in peak hour and have a good look around. Can your business really help everyone you see? No, of course not, then stop trying immediately. Focus on your ideal client. Yes it will close doors, but more importantly, it will open roof’s into a more profitable marketplace. Stop talking about yourself too much. Especially when you first met a client. There is nothing more boring than listens to you talk about you. Your ideal client is desperate to solve their problem. Time may be an issue, they may be attracted to your competitors, help your client by showing you can solve their problem. There is plenty of time later to tell them about you. Right now give them the confidence to move forward. Talking about you is a roadblock that will destroy the sale. Speaking industry jargon is a universal no-no. Why then do so many people do it? It’s not what your client wants to hear. Firstly, most will struggle to understand you. It can only lead to confusion, frustration and their departure to find someone else. Is that what you want? Work on connecting with your client on an emotional level. Dip deeper to find the connection. Work on a series of questions that will unravel the truth. Then and only then will you understand their needs. Stop only selling products and services. Be flexible enough to listen and determine how you can provide unique solutions that people want. Do this effectively and the price discussion is mitigated. Stop trying to make the sale. Look for a real engagement. Once formed, the client will ask you to work for them. It’s such a different relationship. One that over time will reward you fully. Lifetime relationships drive profit. Think about this next time you want more clients: Stop marketing, don’t sell.
