Back In the Day 8

In December of 2018 I had my second knee replacement surgery that ended up with

complicaons and another emergency surgery. During this me, I couldn’t do physical therapy

so the boredom and spare me caused me to browse the internet. Since 2016 I have wanted a

Shelby GT350, and was searching for a used one so I would-

n’t have to pay the $5000.00 dealer premium.

While searching, I stumbled on 2 new ones, one in

Sea+le and one in Montana that seemed reasonably priced.

I called Sea+le on Saturday and got their best price. The

dealer in Montana wasn’t open on Saturday so we called on

Monday.

The dealer was in Fairfield, Montana, a town of 700

people. The dealership has been in the same family for 80

years and might be the smallest Ford dealer in the country.

The car is a 2017 Shelby GT350 with 5 miles on it and a full

new car warranty. We made the deal to buy the car and

offered to put money on it and he said no, a handshake

over the phone was good enough for him.

Barry, Dave and I decided to head over the next

Sunday, January 27, and pick the car up on Monday the

28th. The weather looked pre+y good when we le4 Sunday

at 9:00am. We got to Lincoln, Mt and it started snowing hard through Rodgers Pass, enough to

cover the road. We got to Fairfield, which is about 40 miles northwest of Great Falls, at about

4:00pm and it stopped snowing. We stayed at a small bed and breakfast that was an old railway

staon that had been moved there in 1890 by using logs and horses. It was very nice and deco-

rated nicely too. We went to dinner at a pizza place and the waitress there was the wife of the

parts manager at the Ford dealer. Small town.

‘Stang of the Month (cont.)

We saw the car and it was beauful. I signed the papers

and backed the trailer up to the door. We had a li+le bit of

difficulty because the curb height and how low the car is, and

the 10 degree weather didn’t help either. We were loaded and

on the way home by 9:45am. The roads were compact snow

and ice all the way to Missoula, but it was clear and sunny.

We got to Missoula at about noon and there was about

2” of ice and road grime on the front and back of the trailer. We

ate lunch at Famous Daves Barbecue and then got home about

4:30pm. We stopped at a carwash plaza to clean the ice and

crud off of the truck and trailer.

It was on fantasc trip with my friends Barry and Dave.

Since then, I didn’t care for the black wheels so I have replaced

them with silver Shelby wheels. I have put 150 miles on it and it

is a dream to drive for being such an animal.

Club Members Take Trophies at

Spokane Speed and Custom Show

Five cars, five awards. It was a clean sweep for the

IEMC at the recent Spokane Speed and Custom Show, at least

as far as individual car entries is concerned. On the other hand,

there was great disappointment as the IEMC did not come

away with the Best Club Display Award despite a fantastic

“Garage Theme” display. The display included many details and

interesting items such as a gas pump, gumball machine, traffic

light, parking meter, a mock-up building complete with a

uniformed and helmeted mannequin peering out if the window,

numerous metal signs, tires and tools.

The club displayed Bruce Stirn’s ’87 GT, Kim Frank’s

’02 Roush Stage 2, Denis Hill’s ’06 GT, Brian Grennell’s ’08 Roush 427R, and Doug Pickett’s ’18 GT. The cars and the display

received many compliments from passers-by and the club made several contacts with potential future members who stopped

by the table to gather information and chat about Mustang matters.

The show featured over 180 cars covering the whole gamut of classes from conservative to rat-rod. A few

nationally-touring cars made the show especially interesting. One such example, The Copper Caddy, was truly a masterpiece

in design, craftsmanship and beauty. It gave hope for the future for automotive hobbyists and enthusiasts. Despite the car

trends that the manufactures try to inflict on us, replete with countless SUV’s and cars that drive themselves, there will always

be someone who can look at the ordinary run-of-the-mill production piece and imagine and build a custom one-of-a-kind

show winner.

Back In The Day

Here’s a look back at May 1982 and an article from the

now-defunct Super Ford Magazine about buying new cars

… “All good sales ideas must come to an end. The new models are no longer a secret. Anybody who reads an automotive publication knows what they will look like six months before they are introduced. For that matter, who knows when the new models come out anyway. Some show up mid-year, some are never introduced until the year is well underway. Then you never know if you can buy one even though they’ve been shown to the public. It’s not the same anymore. When you saw a car at the dealer extravaganza, you could be sure it could be ordered for immediate delivery. You didn’t think those dealers would order all those doughnuts if they didn’t ex-pect to sell the cars that were on display.”

“Why is the auto industry in such a mess today? If you ask me, they don’t know what the American driver wants. We don’t want foreign cars. We don’t want cars that drive themselves. We don't want seats that are more plush than our living room furniture. We don’t want cars that tell us when to change gears. We don’t want cars that look just like the competitors! We don’t want cars that get 300 miles per gallon. And we sure don’t want to pay the price to have all these things that we don’t want! What we want is a good variety of doughnuts to munch on while we are trying to decide if we should buy the Fordoor for family convenience of throw all caution to the wind and buy the two-door hardtop with four barrel carburetor and overdrive. Of course, with this model one’ll automatically get the deluxe interior (simulated leather as opposed to cloth).”

“NEED MEMBERS HELP”

We’ve decided to help the Veterans

Home again this year. We need your help by

donating things needed by the Veterans. We

will be doing a collection on May 25th at the

Gus Johnson car show.

We are letting you know early so if you

can’t make the car show you could drop off

items at the May meeting. Below is a list of

items they said would be of benefit to them:

• Electric razors

• Large body wash bottles

• Spray deodorant

• Sox and undies

• Spray cologne

• Head phones (wired) for their TV

use

• Older I-Pads

• Nail polish for the ladies

• Clothing for men and women (4-5--6

X in sizes)

Please give us a hand and bring what

you can to the meeting or car show.

These guys will love you for it.

Who Am I?

Can you guess which IEMC Member this is? If

you can your name will be entered into a drawing for

the “Hershey Award” at the May monthly meeng.

Submit your guess to the Newsle"er Editor at

[email protected].

Hints: she is approximately one year old in this

picture. According to some sources, in early US

history, 100% of the immigrant cizens with her

Germanic last name were carpenters by occupaon.

Other sources say that by the late 1800’s the majority

were farmers.
