1926 Great Miami Hurricane• Landfall as a Category 4 Hurricane in Miami September 18th, 1926 with maximum sustained winds of 131-155 mph.• Minimum Central Pressure: 935 millibars.• Storm Surge of 8-15 Ft in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties• Most deaths in Miami occurred shortly after the passage of the hurricane’s eye as people thought that the hurricane had passed during the half-hour lull.• Muck dike protecting Moore Haven was destroyed by storm surge on Lake Okeechobee which was a prelude to the 1928 hurricane. • Second landfall along the gulf coast near Mobile, AL on September 21st after stalling along the Florida panhandle coast for nearly 24 hours. • Pensacola experiences Category 3 hurricane conditions and a storm tide of nearly 10 feet.• The University of Miami opened for classes days after the Hurricane struck the area, and their mascot was subsequently named the Hurricane in remembrance of the disaster.
