Abstract—Taking the undergraduates of Chinese sports colleges and universities as research object, this paper analyzes the defects of traditional exam system of theory teaching of Chinese sports colleges and universities and explores the development mode & operational approach of intelligent exam system from the practical application of Chinese sports education. The research methods adopted include literature consultation, expert interview and mathematical statistics. This paper presents the main functions and design points of this system in details and makes empirical analysis to the application of intelligent exam system in sports teaching. The purpose of this research is to provide models and references for the establishment of intelligent exam system of sports colleges and universities.

Keywords- intelligent exam system; sports; theory teaching

I. INTRODUCTION At present, the teaching modes of Chinese sports

colleges and universities are divided into theory teaching and practice teaching. The study of theory part is mainly traditional classroom instruction while the practice teaching focuses on physical training and the learning of basic sports skills. The sports theory course plays an important role in developing learning interest, mastering skill essentials and enhancing physical training consciousness. Exam is an important approach of education evaluation. Its most important effect is to test the learning outcomes of students, which is also an important link of teaching quality assessment. Therefore, if the implementation system of exam can meet the requirements of education reform of Chinese colleges and universities is the growing trend of current education evaluation.

II. NECESSITY OF EXAM SYSTEM REFORM Compared with traditional exam mode, the intelligent

exam system has incomparable superiorities. It contracts the links of traditional exam process—building, examining approving, printing, recording, issuing, grading and filing of exam paper, into one or two links. It almost eliminates all the possibilities of direct manual interventions in the exam process which saves large manual resources, material resources and financial resources and increases the objectivity and fairness of exam results substantially. Especially PE teachers are very tired when having classes outdoors, but the traditional exam process is miscellaneous

with trifles and grading paper after theory exam is a job with large working amount, so the traditional exam mode is becoming inappropriate for requirements of current exam.

III. RESEARCH OBJECT AND METHOD

A. Research Object We chose two classes from Grade 2009 of Hunan

University of Science and Technology, Hunan Province, China, and made random allocation. The computer exam group is Class One with 52 students (45 males, 7 females) and the written exam group is Class Two with 53 students (46 males and 7 females). The average scores of the two classes in the most recent final exam is basically no difference so they have comparability (P>0.05).

B. Research Method 1)Document Literature : Getting information of

current research situation, existing problems and development tendency through relevant literature on research of computer aided system, to offer theory and practice basis for the design and implementation of this research.

2) Expert Interview : In the process of subject selection and research, seeking for advice about development tools selection and research design from experts widely through interviews and informal discussions to ensure the smooth development of the research.

3)Mathematical Statistic:Making application study statistics of intelligent exam system of sports theory course by inputting all the data gained in the software of Excel and SPSS17.0.

IV. APPLICATION OF INTELLIGENT EXAM SYSTEM OF SPORTS THEORY COURSE

A. Software Environment and Hardware Environment Intelligent exam system adopts exam on computer,

selects exam content randomly and uses close-book exam type. The hardware environment adopted is generally microcomputer network room. Because the three statistical softwares, SPSS, SAS and SYSTAT, are all based on Windows operating system, using network is

more convenient and speedy than using a single computer to transfer and collect exam papers. Therefore, this system also chooses interface setting which makes it more direct observed, more friendly and more humanized.

The software part of the exam system of sports theory course can be divided into two sections, exam system and grading system. It adopts a separate mode of exam and grading. One advantage of it is that it can avoid students obtaining answers through illegal means. Another advantage is that it makes teachers read over and grade subjective items to achieve real hommization and thus avoids the defects of computer grading.

B. Exam System 1) Design of question bank. The question bank uses

Access database with strong database and management function as the development platform to manage and store questions. The basic design principles of question bank are building a proper database by analyzing user requirements according to exam characteristics, building the question bank according to examining knowledge points to ensure a overall exam, setting question types according to standardization and standardization to make question setting and exam easy, arranging sores of knowledge points examined properly and determining score distribution of each question. The difficulty in database design is that questions should be set randomly to avoid cheating of students, i.e. the question banks in computers may be the same but their orders are different by setting serial number, sequence number and question number of questions separately.

2) Login system of examinee. Students can enter the client side of exam system through a server. The examinee should input his candidate number or student number, name and class and choose his exam paper type by selecting corresponding type in the column of “choose question”(for instance, A, B or random) and clicking “login ” with the mouse. The exam system will pop up a page table of basic information of the student for his check and verification (such as name, sex, student number, major, etc.). Teachers could design exam paper A and exam paper B accordingly to avoid cheating. The difficulty of login system design is that if the database isn’t closed in the transmission of exam paper, the database of exam paper transmitted to server will present 0 byte which means it fails to transmit the database of exam paper amounting to the transmission fails. In order to solve this problem, we set the program to make a force-close to all the databases before transmitting exam papers.

3) Answer system of examinee. The exam questions mainly include seven parts, single selection, multi-selection, filling in the blanks, short answer, term interpretation, essay type and true or false. The database adopts ADO control to realize the real-time connection which can ensure that every revise of the student can be recorded in the database. In this situation, if the system halted unexpectedly, the student can still finish his exam in his second login. The difficulty in answer system design is that the system lock is realized through the function SystemParametersInfo() of Windows API. It can block the key combinations of Ctrl+Alt+Del and Alt+Tab to ensure that the students can’t do any revise again.

4) Grading system. The grading system is composed by three parts, making standard answer, login system of grading and development & making of grading interface. The standard answer is also designed through Access database witch can go hand-in–hand with the design of question bank or made separately accordingly. We only need to bring the serial number of standard answer into correspondence with the serial number in question bank and then we can find the corresponding answer of each question. The login system of grading is build for the purpose of finding the designated exam paper. The file path on the left can be used to find the exam papers proposed to be graded. On the right there is some information which can be filled with grading person or question types needed grading and correcting. There are two approaches for selection. The first approach is grading according to given candidate number range. The second approach is automatic searching which needs a database of students for searching and the system will make grading exam papers one by one according to the candidate numbers provided by the student database. As to the subjective questions, when the keywords of the answer input by the student are inconsistent with the standard answer, the software will “discuss with” the grading teacher besides “weighing” and “comparison” the answer with the one in answer bank. For instance, as to the question type of filling in the banks, it gives the answers in corresponding blanks, while for the question types of term interpretation and short-answer question, their answers are generally longer. But the database has a limitation to the text length that the longest text has 255 bytes, so this text selects and uses text files to keep answers. In which situation, students can input answers according to their abilities without the limitation of database. It has achieved good effect. Therefore, transferring text answer into grading system to execute grading is a characteristic of the grading system. As to the grading interfaces of short answer question and term interpretation, the answer keys are on the left for the teacher’s reference and student’ s answer is on the right for the teacher to grade. The teacher should grade according to answer of the student and fill the sore directly in the score column which can avoid the dogmatism of direct computer grading and realize hommization of grading. The teacher should analyze the exam results when the exam is over so that he can take different measures to improve his teaching quality according to different situations. This function is mainly outputting the information like exam scores in bulk to assist teachers to analyze exam results. The difficulty in grading system design is using Jet database engine SQL of Microsoft. The structured query language (SQL) is the standard language when visiting the database. We could complete complex database operations through SQL without considering how to deal with the low-level details of the physical database. Meanwhile, SQL is an optimized language which can increase access speed to database through specialized database technology and mathematical algorithm.

V. TEST AND ANALYSIS OF TEACHING EXPERIMENT OF INTELLIGENT EXAM SYSTEM

In order to check the effect of this system, we randomly chose two classes from grade 2009 of Hunan University of Science and Technology, Hunan Province, China, and made random allocation. The computer exam group was Class One with 52 students (45 males, 7 females) and the written exam group was Class Two with 53 students (46 males and 7 females). The average scores of the two classes in the most recent final exam were basically the same so they have comparability (P>0.05). Computer exam group got familiar with computer operating system in one week before the exam and they could make practice by using the computers offered by the teacher at any time. The unified exam on computer was taken when the whole group was familiar with relevant operations. The written exam group used exam paper to complete the exam. The exam content and exam time of two groups are the same (120 minutes). Statistic method: Grading the scores into the excellent (over 85), the good (70-84), the pass (60-69) and the fail (under 60). We used the statistical software SPSS17.0 to analyze the data and the Wilcoxon rank sum test to compare the exam scores of two groups. Considering that it has a statistical significance with the difference of P<0.05. Table 1 and fig.1 presents the results.

Table 1 Results Distribution of Exams of Different Methods

Grouping Score

TotalExcellent Good Pass Fail

Computer exam 35 15 1 1 52

Written exam 25 24 3 1 53

Total 60 39 4 2 105

The result of computer exam group is better than that

of written exam group and the comparative difference between two groups has statistical significance (P=0.038). The excellent percentage of computer exam group is 67.30% with four people more than that of the written exam group whose excellent percentage is only 53.00%. In the score rage of good (70 一 84), the number of people in written exam group is 22 which is a little more than 16 of computer exam group. In the score range of pass(60 一69), the number of people of computer exam group is 3 and the number of written exam group is 2. In the fail range (under 60), only one student in the computer group failed the exam.

From the comparison above and overall evaluation we can see that, first, the development tools of theory intelligent exam system of sports major are advanced with the characteristics of simple operation, good interface and comprehensive design, but in the combination with sports professional theory they can’t change the answer ways used in traditional exam completely. For instance it can’t realize the answer ways of choosing according to pictures, analyzing according to pictures, drawing and analyzing and analyzing according to video. This field needs further

development and research. Second, the score proportions of each part of exam paper analysis in computer exam and written exam are basically the same. It indicates that it’s feasible to used this research result directly in sports theory exam of regular institutions of higher learning though the five question types designed by this system can’t meet the high level requirements of professional sports colleges and universities completely. Third, from the process between early training and later exam on computer, we can see that students can answer questions through computer smoothly and the man-machine communication pattern basically agrees well with the behavioral habits and communication pattern of the adolescent which can cause students’ enthusiastic participations. It also indicates that the system with reasonable design and perfect operation is suitable for promotion and applications in colleges and universities. Fourth, from the unique characteristics of this system we can see that teachers don’t need many training when use it. The one ever used office tools like Windows and Excel can use any function of serve-side (teacher management part) of this system through self-study. It also indicates that this system is suitable for promotion and application in colleges and universities.

In short, the teaching experiment of the teaching and research group has achieved the anticipated effect. The intelligent exam system has a simple interface which is easy to operate and even the students not familiar with computer can handle it easily. Now the senior school students begin to have computer class so they can handle the system only need to know the basic Windows operation and typewriting. Meanwhile, the operation system achieves good effects in practical application, such as convenient exam, rapid paper building, easy grading and high efficiency. The scores directly output can be easily handled or recorded by computer. This scientific design reduces teacher’s work load of setting questions, grading and correcting exam papers and recording scores and then improves exam efficiency substantially, saves resources like paper, and enhances the fairness and justice of exams. It enables teachers to spend more time and energy on designs of classroom teaching and exam content. It improves teaching quality greatly, makes it possible to check students’ ability of absorbing knowledge more objectively and promotes educational reform of sports major of our school. Therefore it has significant practical meanings and reference values.
