Why Buildings? More than 30% of
global greenhouse gas emissions are
buildings-related, and emissions could be
2x or even 3x by 2050 if we carry on
with BAU...
In India alone, more than half of the buildings that will exist in 2030 did not exist in 2010. Unless we are deliberate in the way we design, construct and renovate buildings, we could lock-in our cities to inefficient energy use for decades to come. Energy waste by buildings burdens our citizens with higher energy bills, air pollution and carbon emissions.

Green Building Council Indonesia (GBCI) is an independent (non-government) and non-profit institution that is fully committed to educating building professionals AS WELL AS the community, to apply appropriate technologies and environmental best practices in facilitating market and societal transformation towards a more sustainable Indonesian and global building industry GBCI developed the first and only Indonesian Green Building Certification specifically for the Indonesian market and the energy rating assessment tools called GREENSHIP. It is competing with LEED (US) and Greenmark (SG). More buildings in Indonesia are GREENSHIP certified

Energy Intensity Comparisons for Various Building Types (Indonesia & Japan)
Huge Energy Saving Poten@al
►Building sector energy use is (probably underestimated) at 18-25% of total energy use in Indonesia ►It has grown rapidly over the last 20 years and is considered as “low hanging fruit” for energy saving ►Improved energy efficiency of buildings could save between 15% and 40% of energy by 2025, so that official target of 15% is “do-able” especially if supported by conducive policies AND innovative private sector

Green Buildings Impact in Indonesia
GBCI is currently developing estimates of GBCI’s Greenship-Certified Green Buildings impact in terms of USD/IDR energy savings, employment, value of the green buildings compared to traditional buildings and other economic and socio-environmental indicators. We believe that producing such indicators can expand and maintain the level of “buy-in” from key stakeholders.
Objec@ve of EEB Lab 2.0 To unlock financially viable energy efficiency investments that today are not being realized because of “non-technical” reasons
Global Partners of EEB Lab 2.0 - Corporate Sponsors
What is EEB Lab 2.0? Lab 2.0 is an on-going engagement process ►Raising awareness and understanding of the multiple benefits of energy efficiency in buildings ►Workforce capacity – Training and Skills ►Financing energy efficiency solutions ►Policy and regulation
What is next after Paris-CoP21? Climate focus on Buildings: a first !
GLOBAL ALLIANCE FOR BUILDINGS AND CONSTRUCTION TO COMBAT CLIMATE CHANGE – LAUNCHED!
Why Efficiency is smarter than Renewables?
Governments offers a lot of subsidies to
expand renewable energy (and fossil fuels) Should it be doing more to subsidize Efficiency?
McKinsey Study (2009) - comparison of the costs of eliminating per ton of CO2 or emissions saved: * Wind power - $38 * Solar - $30 * Replacing incandescent lights in a home with LED - $159, and using * Energy-Efficient appliances saved about $108 per ton.
Global Green Buildings – to double by 2018, what about GBs in Indonesia?
World Green Building Trends 2016, Developing Markets Accelerate Global Green Growth a new study from Dodge Data & Analytics and United Technologies Corporation, a World Green Building Council (WorldGBC) research partner came out with the following findings: (1) Global green building continues to double every three years
(2) Percentage of companies expecting to have more than 60% of their building
projects certified green is anticipated to more than double by 2018, from 18% now to 37%.
(3) The anticipated growth will largely be driven by countries that still have developing green markets, with firms from Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, China and India reporting dramatic growth in the percentage of their projects that they expect to certify as green.
(4) Building owners report seeing a median increase of 7% in the value of their green buildings compared to traditional buildings
Given the benefits shown by the World Green Building Trends 2016 study, is there any initiative by the Indonesian government to provide banking or fiscal incentives?
Why Efficiency CAN deliver our Future today
The good news? We have new options for collaboration More channels for action and funding available from multilateral/bilateral organizations. Some examples are (1) WBCSD Low Carbon Technology Partnerships EEB Lab, RE, Cement. etc. (2) ICLEI carbonn® Climate Registry – for greater transparency & accountability of local climate actions (3) JICA-Indonesia Joint Credit Mechanism Projects and Feasibility Studies Funding (4) Global Environment Facility, World Resource Inst. & UNEP-Dec 2015 expanding the Building Efficiency Accelerator (BEA) program in 23 cities & 11 developing countries
• Need for focus not only on Energy Supply but also to the equally critical need for Energy Efficiency & Conservation
Why Innova@on CAN deliver our Future today
(1) Bali-based Synergy Efficiency Solutions recently won a “Business Plan Competition” (worth US$ 1-50 million) organized by CTI Private Financing Advisory Network (PFAN)
(2) Mission-Innovation.net & Breakthrough Energy Coalition (Bill Gates & other ICT figures) (3) GEF-UNIDO offers the “Global Cleantech Innovation Program” in Armenia, India,
Malaysia, Pakistan, South Africa, Turkey & other countries (INDONESIA can join). Winners: Reneon (MY), Tank Utility (US), Eclimo Electric Vehicles (MY) & many others
(4) Some companies in INDONESIA & ASEAN countries are offering private investment opportunities by offering Convertible Notes for “Energy Savings Performance Contract” deals worth millions of dollars with excellent returns. E.g. IDPM.com (ID-SG) & others
Other good news? New commercial financing options are now available
Why Regula@ons CAN deliver our Future today
(1) Government’s Financial Services Authority (OJK) released Sustainable/Green Financing Roadmap (2014) offers prudential, financial and other incentives (see above). Aims: (a) set the conditions needed to achieve sustainable finance in medium and long term, (b) determine and develop milestones showing improvements related to sustainable finance.
(2) This roadmap acknowledges that Indonesian economy currently still exhibits wasteful traits in terms of energy usage as well as environmental degradation & attempts to remove barriers
(3) Indonesia’s Ministry of Energy & Mineral Resources (ESDM) is seriously promoting the “Energy Savings Performance Contract” financing and “Energy Service Companies (ESCO)” business model . In April 2016, the “ESCO Core Regulation/Ministerial Decree”
will be released. Advised by Tom Dreesen, former Chair, NAESCO (US ESCO Association)
Breakthroughs? New regulatory support measures - opening financing options in 2015-24?
CONCLUSION: GBC Indonesia & GREENSHIP Impact ►EE is SMARTER than RE, EE before RE ! ! ! ►ECONOMIC PROSPERITY, SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS OF THE EXISTENCE OF GBCI & GREENSHIP CANNOT ONLY BE MEASURED IN DOLLARS & CENTS ►GBCI has obtained AND maintained the “buy-in” from corporate, government as well as professionals. Its activities have had a significant impact on the development of a more sustainable Buildings & Construction industry in Indonesia ►Help to transform mindsets and B&C market and introduce new practices around GREENSHIP and promote green technologies & programs in private, NGO as well as government sectors ►ENERGY EFFICIENCY IN BUILDINGS Program (led by GBCI with domestic and international partners) is aiming to further transform the market
