Introduction
There are 16 dogs on each team.The kind of dogs they use are the Alaskan Malamute and the Siberian Husky.There are about 1,000 dogs in the event. They also use huskies.Dogs need to wear boots to keep their feet protected.

They have different routes every other year.There are 27 checkpoints on the Southern route and 26 on the Northern route.On odd years they go on the Northern route, on even years they go on the Southern route.

The Anchorage Chrysler Dodge Official Truck Award is the award for the Iditarod winner.The Red Lantern award is given to the person who finished the Iditarod last.The PenAir Spirit of Alaska award is given to the team that gets to McGrath first.
