ATHENS

Ancient and modern, with equal measures of grunge and grace, bustling Athens is a heady mix of

history and edginess. Iconic monuments mingle with first-rate museums, lively cafes and al fresco

dining. The historic centre is an open-air museum, yet the city’s cultural and social life takes place

amid these ancient landmarks, merging past and present.

The average temperature throughout the month of October can reach an average high of 23°C and

an average low of 15°C.

FLIGHTS

Several major airlines serve Athens Airport (ATH) and there are daily Athens flights from Manchester,

London Gatwick and London Stansted. Airlines include EasyJet, Ryan Air and British Airways which

operate a number of flights from around the UK.

AIRPORT TRANSFERS

ARRANGED TRANSPORT

We are happy to arrange airport transfers (single or return) from Athens Airport to the Hotel

Grande Bretagne at an additional cost. Please see different options available to you when you book.

Guests will pass through both passport control and customs, and reach the arrival hall where a

uniformed escort will wait for them, holding a sign with IDF’s logo and name of the event IDF

EUROPEAN STUDY WEEKEND 2017. Guests will be escorted to their vehicle, where a driver will assist

with their luggage. Bottled mineral water is offered to all guests upon entering the vehicle. The

transfer journey will take between 40 – 50 minutes.

Group and individual transfers will be arranged according to the number of guests arriving on each

flight. We will allocate accordingly.

Please note that any transfers between 21:00 and 07:00 will incur a surcharge of up to 20%. All

transfers will include fully air-conditioned private coaches or private cars, bottled mineral water,

signage, tolls, luggage fees and all current taxes.

FRIDAY

Gourmet dinner at Dionysos Zonars. Experience fine dining with international cuisine.

Dionysos Zonars is located in a prominent position on the outskirts of the Acropolis, having a

panoramic view of the sacred rock and the Odeon of Herodes Atticus (Herodion). It combines a prime

location with stylish renovated space and the high quality Greek modern cuisine.

FRIDAY

Traditional Greek Dinner at Psaras and Elaia Taverna in the Old Town of Plaka

Located in the heart of the old town, for more than two decades, Psaras and Elaia Taverna have

been living proof that Plaka has much more to offer than the usual tourist traps. Both offer a

wonderful and cultural dining experience with open terraces and views of the city.

Serving typical authentic Greek cuisine in slightly rustic surroundings. These two restaurants typify

what a Greek Taverna should be.

Both restaurants have outside terraces so with weather permitting the welcome drink or the full

dinner will be served outside. Both have the back up of inside space.

TOURS AND ACTIVITIES

SATURDAY

Athens Walking Tour

Combine the sights of modern Athens with sites of historical importance on a three hour afternoon

walking tour. With an expert guide on hand to explain all the world known Athens attractions, the

tour passes Constitution Square and Panathenaic Stadium — home of the first modern Olympic

Games. Explore the area around the Acropolis of Athens, and discover famous monuments such as

the Herodium theatre of the Agora.

Acropolis Museum Tour

Acropolis Museum - the definite must visit. The New Acropolis Museum was designed by Swiss

architect Bernard Tschumi in co-operation with the Greek architect Michalis Photiadis. Its unique

design has incorporated the excavations which are visible under stunning glass floors. The Acropolis

masterpieces are marked out and given the prominence they deserve through the ideal interior

atmosphere conditions, the natural lighting, as well as easy visitor access, panoramic views and

excellent layout of the exhibition areas. It exhibits about 4,000 artefacts.

McArthurGlen Designer Outlet Athens is the first designer outlet in Greece where you can find your

favourite brands at up to 70% off, all year round. With more than 100 boutiques offering something

for everyone. Depending on interest, we can arrange a coach for those who wish to take themselves

off shopping for the morning. Alternatively we could include information for taxis along with an

address of the Outlet within the reading material for the conference.

Distance from the hotel to the Shopping Outlet is approximately 45 minutes by taxi and estimated cost is €30 - €35.

SUNDAY

Winery and Olive Grove Tour – please note this tour is en route to the airport

45 kilometres away from Athens busy city centre stands a small family estate of Zahaios, where you

can learn about and participate (depending on season) in all stages of vine and olive cultivation, from

grafting and transplanting to pruning and harvest. A traditional mezze style lunch will be available on

arrival at the family’s dining room, visitors will then have the opportunity to taste and explore

different varieties of extra virgin olive oil and the family’s own produced wines, before continuing

their journey to the airport.

DURATION: Up to 5.5 hours to include lunch and transport
