IDENTITY GUIDELINES
Understanding our changing planet is fundamental to our future economic prosperity and wellbeing. NERC advances the frontier of environmental science, by commissioning new research and training that deliver valuable scientific breakthroughs. We are the driving force of investment in environmental science.
This guide is intended for anyone designing or working with NERC corporate identity.
Correct and consistent use of NERC branding across all our corporate literature and materials is essential to build recognition and familiarity with our identity. These guidelines will help you use that identity correctly.
NERC-funded students, researchers and investments must display our logo on any promotional and corporate material including publications, reports, presentations, websites and stationery.
Professional designers working on corporate materials relating to NERC-funded research should also use these guidelines.
Welcome
Logo versions
The logo is a single unit made up of the NERC acronym and strapline. Approved versions are illustrated here.
The square, colour version is preferred – please use this whenever possible.
You must always use one of NERC’s own logo files, do not create your own. Do not use the acronym element or strapline separately.
Mono versions may be used on single-colour documents or where four-colour reproduction is unavailable.
A reverse version can be used on dark backgrounds or images where colour is unsuitable (see Things to avoid).

Digital use
Please apply these additional rules for digital logos.
l Do not make a larger logo from a small one: the resolution will not be good enough.
l Save logos as PNG or equivalent file format.
l Try to keep the file size to less than 10kb to speed loading.
l Ensure logos have an ‘alt’ tag giving an appropriate description, and title if needed.
l If the logo appears against a dark background image or pattern you will need a mono-negative version. These need to be custom-made to match your background colour.
Instructions for producing mono-negative logos can be found on our website: www.nerc.ac.uk/about/enquiries/logos/web/guidelines/
Logo and graphic files
NERC logos and blue flower graphic can be downloaded from our website: www.nerc.ac.uk/about/enquiries/logos/
The blue flower graphic is not a required feature or an alternative to the NERC logo, but can be used in conjunction with it for branding purposes. The curved lines visible on the cover of the Great science for a great future publication, reproduced on the following page, are another optional element of NERC branding available to designers.
EPS files are provided for all print use including large items such as signage.
All NERC logos are registered trademarks in the UK and other countries. You may not use them, electronically or in print, without written permission from the trademark owner.
NERC-funded students, researchers and investments do not have to seek permission but must adhere to these logo guidelines.
If you are unsure about any aspect of using our logo please email:[email protected] for print and trademark [email protected] for digital queries
