SYMPTOMS AND CHARACTERISTICS APPEARANCE ONE OR BOTH EYES CAUSED BY Eye Allergies 4,5 Infected eyes 6,7 • Sore, gritty, irritated or red eyes • Can worsen as the day goes on • Eyes may be watery • Cannot be cured but symptoms can be controlled. • Itchy and eyes may also be red and burning • May have mild light sensitivity and swollen eyelids • Can be seasonal or year round • Eyes may have a clear watery discharge. • Red and watery eyes • Burning and gritty eyes • Usually lasts 1-2 weeks, but some can take months • Sticky, gunky discharge on lashes. Normally in both eyes. Normally in both eyes unless caused by local allergen or irritant. May start in one eye and spreads to the other. Most commonly, a disruption to the outer lipid layer of the tear film. Pollen and other allergens such as dust mites and animal dander. Bacterial or viral infection.
