IDENTIFY YOUR CURRENCY NOTES
$500 AND $1000
IDENTIFY YOUR CURRENCY NOTES
$500 AND $1000
If you have a note which you believe is
counterfeit, take it to the police at once.
It is a criminal offence to hold or pass on
a note which you know is counterfeit.
While there may be some counterfeit
notes about, you can protect yourself
by checking the notes when you
receive them.
Old banknotes remain legal tender.
The previous design of banknotes,
with the hummingbird watermark and
fl ower highlight, remain legal tender and
will continue to circulate alongside the
upgraded notes until the stock of older
notes is exhausted.
Information is also available on Bank of Jamaica’s website at
www.boj.org.jm
This leafl et illustrates the key security
features of the upgraded $500 and
$1000 banknotes, including the new
security features as well as the current
ones with which you are familiar.
The new security features will make
Jamaican banknotes more diffi cult
to counterfeit, and make it easier to
distinguish counterfeit from genuine
banknotes.
Look for the key security features
described in this leafl et. Do not rely on
just one single feature. If you are in doubt,
compare the note with one that you
know is genuine.

You already know about these
EXISTING security features...
Feel the banknote.
Run your fi ngers over the note for the
familiar feel of banknote paper and to
fi nd the places where the ink is thicker.
Look at the iridescent coating.
This consists of a vertical band of
colour which changes when viewed
at an angle. The image on the $500 is
a band of ‘clubs’ and on the $1000, a
band of butterfl ies.
Look and feel the feature for the visually impaired.
Each note has a different symbol on the front to aid the
partially sighted.
$500 Five Hundred
$1000 One Thousand
...Now you need to know about these
NEW features too
Look for the watermark.
Hold the banknote up to the light
and see the image of Nanny of the
Maroons on the $500 and Michael
Manley on the $1000.
Check for the watermark
highlight.
Place the banknote on a dark surface
and the shadow of a crocodile and
500 will be seen on the $500 and
a butterfl y and 1000 on the $1000.
The same images appear as a bright
highlight in the paper when the note is
held up to the light.
Check the security thread.
Tilt the banknote up and down and
the colour will change from red to
green. Hold the banknote up to the
light and the strip will appear as a
continuous line with the text ‘BOJ’
and the denomination of the note,
e.g. BOJ 500 or BOJ 1000.
