I'm am grateful to work for a company, First Commu-nity Credit Union, that gives me opportunity to par-ticipate with Greeters, Concerts in the Park, and our
community. I am so excited to have been chosen Grants Pass Chamber of Commerce Greeter of the Month for January. Back in the late 1990’s I started going to meet-ings when I volunteered with the March of Dimes. After about my second meeting, I was hooked. Even though at-tendance was much smaller back then, I still had a dif-ficult time talking in front of the group. Over the years that has changed as I participated in various committees of the Chamber. I am sure there are times, when I get on my soapbox about the Chamber that some people want to break out the duct tape. In past years, I have been very proud that I served on the Board for many years in officer capacities right up to and including Chamber Board Chair. In recent years, I have served, for the most part, on the Chamber Govern-ment Affairs Committee. I will always be grateful to the Chamber of Com-merce and all the participants who have and continue to add an incredible dimension to my life. I am not the same person I was back when I started. Thanks to all of you, I continue to learn and grow. Thank you, with all my heart, for this incredible honor.

Where I would like to see your department in 5 years:
I would like to see “trust” restored between the citizens
and local government. This is a huge goal, but it can happen.
The three members of the Board are elected on a non-partisan basis to serve four-year terms. At the begin-ning of each year, the Board chooses from its members
a Chairperson and a Vice-Chairperson to serve during the
ensuing year. The Chairperson presides at Board meetings and signs documents in the name of the County. The Vice-Chair-person substitutes when the Chairperson is absent.
With the exception of holidays and other planned re-cesses, the Board of Commissioners convenes the first, third and fourth Wednesdays for Weekly Business Sessions at 9:00 a.m. and the second Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. Unless otherwise stated on the agenda the Board meets at the Anne Basker Auditorium 600 NW 6th Street, Grants Pass, OR. The meetings are open to the public,
with a maximum of three minutes of comment, per person, taken during the Citizen Comment period. Administrative Workshops and General Discussions, are held in Room 154 of the Courthouse. These meetings are generally open to the public, but public comment is not taken. Matters to be presented at these meetings are listed in an agenda prepared, in advance, by Board staff.
My Advice to young people:
Get involved in your local government. Be a part of forming the policies you
want to live by. Rely on the history of your elders they provide, but govern for the
future you will live in.
My Advice to young people:
It’s all about relation-ships. Be genuine and sincere in your pursuits. Find something you en-joy and hopefully, make a career out of it. Start small, be willing.
Where I would like to see your department in 5 years:
I would like to see the County in a place of stable funding where all required
services are offered at capacity.
When I’m not working: My family is my
priority and any time I get to spend with them is
a treasure.
Grants Pass is a council-manager form of government. The mayor and councilors volunteer their time to serve our community. Elected by city residents, they serve
their respective wards.
Eight Councilors represent 4 wards and are elected at large to 4-year terms of office. The Council oversees city government and employs a City Manager who is in charge of the city staff and departments.

Going Caveman in Grants Pass
Grants Pass Active ClubAntics & Altruism
Adapted from a Jim Stratton Blog, 1/26/17
Growing up in Oregon, Caveman campers were everywhere. On week-end fishing trips with my family, my
sisters and I would laugh at the Fred Flint-stone-like logo on the front of each camper. At the time, I had no idea the caveman was from a national park site. I figured this out later in life during my first visit to Oregon Caves Nation-al Monument and Preserve. Turns out there is a decades-long connection between the town of Grants Pass, the cave-man and the caves. The monument is lo-cated in the Siskiyou Moun-tains of southern Oregon, about an hour west of Grants Pass. Elijah Davidson discov-ered the site in 1874 when he followed his dog, who was chasing a bear, into the caves. Within a decade, the first fledgling tour company was giving $1 underground tours, which included a camp-ing spot and pasture to graze your horse. Of-ficial recognition by the federal government came in 1909 when President William Taft used the Antiquities Act to create Oregon Caves National Monument.
With the advent of the automobile and construction of a road to the caves in the mid-1920s, business owners in Grants Pass began to realize the value of a booming tourism industry. A group of locals calling them-selves the Oregon Cavemen began dress-
ing in animal skins and horsehair wigs and staging themselves along the un-derground tour at Oregon Caves, posing for photos in promotional brochures, taking part in parades and public events, and hosting annual events to draw peo-ple to the area. It is easy to see why campers manufactured in Grants Pass were branded with the caveman logo that tickled my sisters to no end every time they saw one.
The Grants Pass Active Club continues to organize caveman events to help spread the word about Oregon Caves, calling them-selves “the world’s most unique booster group.”(https://www.boatnik.com/) History of the Caveman www.nps.gov/orca/learn/historyculture/oregon-caves-cavemen.htm

The Chamber's Business Retention & Expansion (BR&E) Committee began in 1998. The pur-pose of BR&E is to help existing local businesses grow, expand and overcome obstacles. Formal face-to-face business surveys are conducted every three years to gather vital information to better provide assistance to local firms. We then develop strategies to aid them based on the data that we gather. From time to time, we coordinate or help to coordinate special events and projects based on the needs of the business community. New committee members and survey volunteers are appreciated.
The current BR&E committee chair is Lowell Gibson - NiceBadge. BR&E Committee meetings are held the second Tuesday of each month at 7:30 a.m. for one hour.
Meetings are held at the Chamber of Commerce boardroom1995 NW Vine St, Grants Pass.

On Saturday January 14th, 2017 students of the Josephine County Foundation (JCF) served 170 residents in the com-munity by providing them with a free eye exam. All five of the high schools from Josephine County (New Hope Christian School, North Valley High, Grants Pass High, Hidden Valley High, and Illinois Valley High) were involved; along with three doctors from the Med-ford area. The residents who came to the clinic that day were over-joyed and appreciative of all the work that the students were doing. . In addition to re-ceiving a full eye exam, pa-tients were also screened for preexisting conditions and diseases including: cataracts, macular degen-eration, hypertensive reti-nopathy, diabetic retinopa-thy, and amblyopia. Blood pressure was also checked in order to screen for diabetes and hypertension which can
be detrimental to one’s health. The patients get the free exami-nation and new eye glasses and the stu-dents learn new skills, gain confidence and leave with impactful patient stories that the students will carry with
them. Thanks to the JCF students from
New Hope Christian School for plan-ning this year’s clinic and putting all the pieces together. They spent many long hours during and after school, just because they wanted to serve their community.

Spotlight on Chamber Members: AWARDS!
Redwood Terrace Assisted LivingReceives Two Awards
For the third year in a row, Redwood Terrace Assisted Living, located near the RCC campus, was select-
ed to receive TWO Excellence in Action Awards by National Research Corpora-tion. The awards recognize long term care and senior living organizations that achieve exceptionally high levels of ex-cellence. The requirements for one of the awards are met by having overall custom-er satisfaction and the other by having overall workforce satisfaction. Redwood Terrace is only one of two communities is Oregon that was awarded both awards. The requirements for the two awards are met by having overall customer and workforce satisfac-tion levels that fall within the top 10% of qualifying organizations nationally. Redwood Terrace’s Executive Di-rector, Jim Thompson, commented “We are very proud of these results, which we reflect well on the dedication of our em-ployees, as well as our company’s com-
mitment to p r o v i d i n g quality as-sisted living services. This feedback al-lows us to identify our s t r e n g t h s and im-p r ov e m e nt oppor tuni-ties so we can continue to provide a safe, positive, and caring environment for our residents.” Redwood Terrace celebrated the awards in January with the Happy Em-ployee contest, inviting members of the Grants Pass community to drop by and take a "selfie" with any one of the workers on staff. Redwood Terrace is an assisted living community located on Canal Av-enue and has 45 individual studio and one-bedroom apartments.
