Using Survey Money, I conducted market research using an online survey gathering information on

music video related questions. Using the response to these questions I was able to makes decisions

regarding the music video preferences.

I discovered that the most popular music genre was indie/alternative closely followed by rock –

because of this my ground and I chose to pick a song of the indie/rock genre finally deciding upon

‘Sweet Disposition’ by The Temper Trap. The song was first released in 2008 and is approximately

3:56 minutes long.

When deciding on the style of my music video, I referred back to my market research and found that

the majority of the survey participants preferred a narrative style video, followed by a conceptual

style, therefore we chose to make the music video a combination of narrative and conceptual style.

For the narrative style, the video will portray a montage edit of various clips involving a group of

teenage friends. The video will be filmed in the style of the friends filming themselves, creating

reflexivity and giving the music video an almost home-made movie quality. To help show this, the

characters will be shown passing the camera, manually focusing/moving the camera and also using a

selfie stick. The use of mobile footage will further help to convey the self-filming style we are aiming

to convey. Within the narrative, we aim to show the group of teenage friends generally having a good

time doing various activities as the meaning of Sweet Disposition is about capturing the innocence of

youth. When researching the definition of Sweet Disposition I found the quote; “When we’re young,

we act first and think later. But as adults, we rationalise everything. This song is about capturing the

innocence of youth.” The conceptual element to our video will be capturing the innocence of youth

within our video clips, showing the audience that not all teenagers are the negative stereotype that is

assumed eg. drugs, heavy drinking, theft ect. It will portray a feel-good vibe of the teens enjoying

themselves, laughing and smiling doing activities such as bowling and bike rides.

The cast for our music video will be made up of ourselves, a group of friends, made up of 2 male and

2 female teenagers. They will appear dressed casually through out the video aiming to fully relate to

the target audience (which we assume to be teenagers between 13-19). Using ourselves is also

convenient for filming as we do not have to rely on others in order to film the clips.

We have many ideas for locations to film, most of them rather local. A few of our ideas are a bike ride

either up Cadishead moss, Irlam Moss or Lymm Dam. We plan to film on bonfire night at our local

park during the bonfire/firework display, as we already planned to attend and enjoy the display. A car

trip was another idea of ours, suggesting we drive to a hill in Stockport with a fantastic view of the

cities lights, or up to Winter Hill. These locations and the journey to them would allow us to capture

the scenic aesthetically appealing shots that my market research proves most viewers enjoy. We will

also film in the Three Sisters located next to the college site to capture some candid shots of the

characters. A train journey was also suggested which would be good to capture shots of the characters

travelling as well as collecting a few scenic shot.

We are planning to film most of our music video footage on a DSLR, but also combining these clips

with footage filmed on our mobile phones. This will give the music video a home made style that we

are aiming to create in order to relate to our audience of a similar age. We also hope to capture a lot of

candid/natural looking shots to help contribute to this effect, trying to avoid setting up shots and

forcing emotions. For example, close up/mid shots of the teenagers walking, laughing, watching

doing their various activities. Aesthetically pleasing shot panning and long shots will be taken of

scenery we encounter during our little voyages to add into the music video as filler clips - such as on

the train or in the car, or stills from outside.
