Other Factors To Consider About Adult Learners

Age• Learners who have recently graduated from University of Phoenix online will already be

accustomed to self paced e-learning & the virtual classroom experience• Baby boomers who have been taught in a physical classroom their entire life are not ideal

candidates online learningLevel of Education

• What language level should training be tailored to?Experience w/technology

• You do not want to teach your warehouse employees located in a rural area important safety training with a 100% self paced e-learning course

Amount of Daily Distractions at Work• Do you have the commitment of line level managers to take employee off of daily job

responsibilities for 3 or 5 days for training?• Would a 2 day training course be better delivered over the course of (16) 1 hour Lunch & Learn

sessions spanning the course of a month?Experience w/Organization Vertical Market

• Don’t assume that your new employee knows all of the technical jargon and acronyms associated with your organization’s area of expertise

Family Commitments• Many training & certification programs require a time commitment outside of daily business hours.

You don’t want the learner to start an accelerated / boot camp style training if the learner has 8 week old twins at home!

The benefits of a “Blended Learning Approach”

What is blended learning?

Blended learning is a training approach that incorporates multiple delivery methods mixing various event-based activities e.g. live instructor-led classroom, virtual classroom, self paced e-learning, one-on-one coaching, simulations, etc… The key to blended learning is to select the right combination of media that will drive the highest business impact, increase learner satisfaction and maximize retention.

Why blended learning? The point of a blended learning approach is to offer a range of learning tools and experiences, which are tailored to the individual learning style of each participant. It is in the best interests of an organization to provide as many opportunities to facilitate the learner to ‘get’ to the educational content as efficiently as possible, and in a way that the learner can absorb the new information without finding the learning experience to be tedious and burdensome.

9 Things To Remember About Adult Learners

Adult learners need to see that the professional development learning and their day-to-day activities are related and relevant.

Adults will commit to learning when the goals and objectives are considered realistic and important to them. Application in the 'real world' is important and relevant to the adult learner's personal and professional needs

Adult learners need direct, concrete experiences in which they apply the learning in real work.

Adult learning has ego involved. Professional development must be structured to provide support from peers and to reduce the fear of judgment during learning.

Adults want to be the origin of their own learning and will resist learning activities they believe are an attack on their competence. Thus, professional development needs to give participants some control over the what, who, how, why, when, and where of their learning.

9 Things To Remember About Adult Learners

Adults need to receive feedback on how they are doing and the results of their efforts. Opportunities must be built into professional development activities that allow the learner to practice the learning and receive structured, helpful feedback.

Adults need to participate in small-group activities during the learning to move them beyond understanding to application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. Small-group activities provide an opportunity to share, reflect, and generalize their learning experiences.

Adult learners come to learning with a wide range of previous experiences, knowledge, self-direction, interests, and competencies. This diversity must be accommodated in the professional development planning.

Transfer of learning for adults is not automatic and must be facilitated. Coaching and other kinds of follow-up support are needed to help adult learners transfer learning into daily practice so that it is sustained.
