Homophobia.

WestriveattheInternaonalleveltoensurethatour

workdoesnotimposeonthebrilliantmindsof

communityadvocates.Weofferthisresourceassimplya

guideforwhatlocalgroupscouldpotenallydowiththeir

aconsheldinover70countriesaroundtheworld.

Itisthehopethatthisresourcewillgivenewmeaningandnew

lifetosomeoldideasthroughthecreaveprocessesofamazing

individualsallovertheglobe.

Wehaveidenfiedseveralthemacacviesthathavetaken

placebyacvistsallovertheworldtogivelocalleadersideas.

UtilizingMedia:Mediaisanincredibletoolforspreadingaposivemessageoutamongstthemasses.Insomecases,

italsoprovidesforsafetyforacviststobeabletosharetheirvoicewithouthavingtobefacetoface

withtheirdetractors.Mediacanbeulizedinanumberofwaystospreadamessageoftolerance

andacceptance.Bycapitalizingonthispossibility,groupshavebeenabletodemonstratesolidarity

toabroadernaonalaudience.Mediacanbeulizedinanumberofwaysaswell.Thereistradionalmediawhichcanbechallenging,especiallyinpredominatelyhomophobiccountries,

however,shouldnotbeignoredastheyusuallyhaveaviewership.Theseformsofmediainclude

television,radio,newspapersandmagazines.Don’tbeafraidtoseekoutinyourlocalcommunies

thosemediahousesthatmightbefriendlytoyourcause.

Thereisalsoanon-tradionalmediathatcanandshouldbeulizedasmuchaspossible.Withthe

increaseofinternetaccessallovertheworld,onesinglepicturecansendshockwavesthroughout

theenreglobe.Ulizethismediainanumberofways.Whetherorganizingeventsthroughsocial

networkingsiteslikeFriendster,facebook,twi]er,etc,etcorusingmediahubslikeYoutube,Vimeo,

Photobucket,andFlickr;ge_ngthewordoutaboutyoureventsinpictures,video,audioandonline

journalscanhelptodrawa]enontoyoureventandmakeitthatmuchmoreimpacul.Thustakea

lessonfromsomeofthe2010eventsfromlastyearlistbelowtocreatesomeofyourownwaysof

workingwithmedia.

WorkingwithLocal,Regional,NationalandInternationalGovernment’sManyorganizaonsthroughouttheworldwereabletomobilizethepowerofgovernmenttohighlightthe

InternaonalDayAgainstHomophobia.Acvistsinmanycaseswereabletoworkwiththeirgovernments

toofficiallyrecognizetheday,topassproclamaonstohonortheday,ortohavegovernmentofficials

parcipatedirectlyinsomeoftheiracons.Somegovernmentshaveevenofficiallyrecognizedthedayas

anaonalholiday.

Forthosecountrieswhoarenotassupporve,itishelpfultoengagewithdiplomatsfromsupporve

countries.EmbassiesoftheFrench,BrishandUSallhavebeengivenmandatesbytheirsuperiorsto

encourageopendialogueanddiscussionswithlocalgroupsincludingLGBT.Approachingtheseembassies

andothersofferawayforlocalacviststogatheranddiscusswithnaonalleaderstheseimportantissues

andtoofferdebateinasafespace.

ManyacvistsfromaroundtheworldhaveulizedthesediplomatstocommemoratetheInternaonal

DayAgainstHomophobiathroughsymbolicgestures.Whetheritisraisingarainbowflagoveranembassy,

orhonoringlocalleaders,theseagenciesshouldnotbeleuntapped,fortheycanserveaveryimportant

factorinfutureadvocacyefforts.

TheUseofArtsandCulture:Theulizaonofarscandculturalmediumswereanexpressivemeanstoarculatethedeepseeded

homophobiaandtransphobiawithincommunies.Allovertheworldacvistsfoundwaystoexpresstheir

concernsabouthomophobiaandtransphobiathroughfilm,music,anddance.Theseexpressionspaved

thewayforconversaonanddialoguetohappenaboutwhatparcipants,saw,heardandfeltaboutwhat

theyhadexperienced.

Somecounesdecidedtohostfilmfes,valsthathighlightedtwoorthreefilmsthatdiscusseddiversity,

tolerance,acceptance,sexuality,etc,etcinordertochallengeparcipantstothinkaboutvariousthemes.

Theseeventscreatedaspaceforpeopletoconsiderhowtheirliveswereimpactedbothnegavelyand

posivelybyvariousissuesrelatedtotheInternaonalDayAgainstHomophobiaandTransphobia.

o Bolivia-hostedit’sthirdedionoftheInternaonalDiversityFilmFesval.

PlaysaboutHomophobiaandTransphobiaalsowerecraedbylocalcommuniestospreadtheword

abouthate,ignoranceandviolence.TheseplayswerealsoaninteracvewayformembersoftheLGBT

communitytoengagewithissuesthatmaynotseemfitforapublicforumordebate.Creangaplayor

arscexpressionofhowHomophobiaandTransphobiaimpactthelivesofeverydaypeoplecanhave

powerfulramificaons.

CreativeCampaigns:Creavecampaignsarewaystotackleahardissuewithauniqueanddeliberateway.Thesetypesof

campaignspoppedupallthroughouttheworldwhereseriousissueswereabletobedilutedthrough

campaignsthataskedparcipantstostopandthinkabouthomophobeandtransphobiaandtheimpact

thatitwashavingonthelocalcommunity.

Campaignscantakeanumberofforms,butareusuallyaimedatstrikingapointforviewers.Driving

homehowimportanttheissueisorhelpingindividualstopauseandthinkevenforamomentcanhavea

significantimpactonchangingheartsandminds.

Campaignsareusuallywellthoughtoutandtakeabitofcreavenesstogetoffoftheground.Many

groupshadgreatcampaigns,thatinsomecases,evenwentglobal.

membersofparliament.

fesval.Thereisabigcommunityofpeoplewhoareacvelyinvestedintheirhealthandareagreatgroup

ofpeopletotapintoaspotenalpartnersorfellowadvocatesfortheInternaonalDayAgainst

HomophobiaandTransphobia.

AthlecsingeneralcanbeusedasaninternaonallanguagesimilartotheOlympics.Itisagreatspace

tosetasidedifferenceandcometogethertoenjoysportforwhatitis.Thisexperiencecanbeusedasan

impetustocreangdialoguearoundimportantissuesasdonesoby2010advocatesinCzechRepublicand

UsingPeoplePower:Formanyacvistsfromaroundtheworld,theuseofmobilizingpeopleinoneplacehasbeenaneffecve

toolfordecades.Thesemassdemonstraonscanserveasapowerfulvisualforcommuniesbothinternal

andexternaltoseethesupportbehindanyonecause.Whenseeingthesegiantgroupsofpeople,itsays

tothepublicthatthisissueissupportedbymany.

Thesemassivedisplayscantakeonmanycreaveforms.Frommarchesfromspecificpointsinacity,to

demonstraonsoutofkeylocaonsinacommunity,andrandom,coordinatedflash-mobsinacommunity

center,largegroupsofpeoplecanstrikeanimportantvisualthatacvistsfromaroundtheworldcanuse

toshowtheirsolidaritywithanissue.FortheInternaonalDayAgainstHomophobiaandTransphobia,

countriesalloverusedthistaccsuccessfullytoshowtheirsolidaritywiththeworld.

CelebratingtheLGBTCommunityanditsDiversity:MessagesofpeaceandhopethatrecognizethepoweroftheLGBTcommunityanditsdiversitycan

somemesbeawinningmessageinandofitself.Demonstrangthistoabroadercommunitycanchange

heartsandmindsinandofitselfandcapturethea]enonofthosewhomaybesi_ngonthefencein

termsoftheirsupportforpeoplewhoexperiencehomophobiaandtransphobia.Severalgroupsfrom

aroundtheworlddecidedin2010toshareamessageoftoleranceandacceptancebycreangeventsthat

peacefullyexpressedtheimportanceofloveandappreciaon.

o China-FreeHugsEventfeaturingcouplesdisguisedas“homosexualgers”inaplayful

allusiontothefacthatthisyearisChan’syearoftheTiger.

o Netherlands-CreatedtheIDAHOawardstohonorpeopleororganizaonsthatsupported

theLGBTmovement.

GatherStatisticalDataGatheringstascaldatatoreleaseincommemoraonoftheInternaonalDayAgainstHomophobiahas

beenusedbyseveralgroupstoimpartvaluableinformaontothepublicthatlocalcommunity

organizaonsserve.Dataisanimportantfactforalotofpeople,asitprovidesstascalpointsthatgive

logicalmeaningtocommonheldconceponsofhowtheworldisandoroughttobe.

GroupshavechosentogatherstascaldatabothfromtheLGBTcommunityitselfalongwiththe

surroundingcommuniesinwhichtheylive.Thismethodhashelpedinanumberofwaysthroughoutthe

worldtoenhancetheunderstandingandacceptanceofLGBTpeople.JustthinkabouthowDr.Alfred

Kinsey,anAmericanscienst,surveyedhundredsofthousandsofAmericansabouttheirsexualbehaviors

andhowthatdatawasusedtoopenthediscussionsaboutsexualitythathadnevertakenplacebeforein

thatcountry.

discriminatedagainstbytheirreligiouscommunies,90%ofLGBTpeoplesllhadstrong

neededtobedonetofixtheproblem.
