Patent tutorial

Jim’s topic was “Patenting your inven-tion on a limited budget”. A title that was sure to catch the attention of all inventors. He shared with us that Coke and KFC don't have a patent. They are just good at keeping secrets.

Jim has a PhD in organic chemistry which means he is extremely qualified to give patent advice on products such as drugs, herbal medicines, soaps and detergents. He has also done many patents which have been mechanical. His company is well suited to creating patents in Asia as they have offices in both Singapore and Malaysia.

Message from the President….

C ould all those wanting a ticket for the Inventor of the Year cum Christmas party on 4th December please call Peter on

and with ABC Radio National the following day. In both in-stances Peter gave a big thank you to the IAA and all those involved and he said it was a fantastic day.

At the “Bendigo Inventors Awards” (below) we had 2 final-ists Rod Sheppard and Len Williams and at the Henty Field Days inventor competition last month Rod Sheppard came runner up there as well!

Main meeting

We had a record 10 visitors at the main meeting which-started with a video of an amazing 240 years old mechani-cal device (automaton) — http://www.chonday.com/Videos/the-writer-automaton

IAA (Vic) annual general meeting (AGM)

The following were elected as committee members unop-posed for 2013/14. Peter O’Shannessy President/Treasurer Rob Wallace Vice President Frank Bishop Public Officer Buzz Cousins Past Federal & IAAVic President Peter Barrett Secretary Len Williams Bendigo Ideas Club Chris Kirby Committee Member/Front Desk

Peter also gave the treasurer’s report for 2012/13 to the end of July 2013. Receipts $9,130 plus equipment $2,956. Expenses $15,040. This was a loss of $2,054 which was put down to a drop in membership however since July an in-crease has been noted in membership resulting in around $2,000 added to the bank.

Inventor of the year competition 2013.

Sam Spataro - Perpetual Motion

Sam has patented a valve entry system for floats to enter a water column. Buoyancy is free energy and causes the floats to rise in the water column. At the top they are pushed out by floats underneath and roll into a vertical stack of floats so that gravity which is also free energy takes the floats to the bottom again ready for re-entry.

Sam claims that this is a perpetual motion machine that has the potential to produce loads of electricity, (but that

is not yet proven in practice). If you used a heavy weight to run a generator you would be using free gravity to pro-duce energy, if you use wind to turn turbines that would be free energy, also machines that use the ocean currents or tides. Solar power is also free energy, but none of them are consistent , and how do you store it?

This is a form of free energy that would not suffer from the limitations of the other systems because it could oper-ate continuously and it would be cheap to install almost anywhere. Unlike the wind turbines that stop when the wind drops, or the solar panels that only work properly when the sun is shining and directly at them, or the weight using gravity that requires energy to lift it again, Sam has used another form of free energy which is the

and moving away from oil dependency. The Victorian government then set up meetings with Sheikh Moham-med via a trade mission .

The founder of Acme fuels was encouraged to export his refinery technology to Victoria with Victorian govern-ment assistance for customized grants to encourage com-mitment and negotiation with McDonald’s Australia.

In order to fast track the new facility in Victoria the gov-ernment found a suitable site for the refinery operation

“free of charge”, engaged with the EPA to ensure all certi-fication proceeded without a hitch and the building that was chosen that had a recycling covenant on it granted by the local council was able to be removed by the Victo-rian government so deployment could proceed.

After the establishment of the new facility in Victoria more assistance was granted, such as

Providing smart-resources-smarter-business grants to companies running bio diesel feasibility studies.

Providing funds to companies to implement findings of feasibility study

Providing skills grants to assist in developing procedures and organ-

isational change requirements (OH&S) for bio diesel take up

Providing B2B business connec-tions to potential fleet operators to expand Acme’s customer diversity

Identifying local bio diesel tank manufacturer to replace importing supplier—custom designs now made more suitable, with reduced pricing.

“Having met Gary previously he is just as good one-to-one as he was giving his great presentation to the IAA

power of a float ris-ing through water combined with grav-ity to drop the float down again outside the water column and an ingenious way of reentering the float into the water tank again. The figures show that three times as much energy can be generated as is con-sumed in the proc-ess, but Sam has not been able to get to the stage of proving this.

If this all sounds a little confusing you can visit his youtube

video at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ytaTbMKZtY

The real power is from larger floats which could be 5 me-ters long and 1 meter in diameter. When they reach the top of the 30 meter column the idea is that the float will turn a paddle that will act like a turbine and create elec-tricity.

Rob Wallace (Vice President IAA (Vic)) remains sceptical about claims regarding perpetual motion and feels that the “energy of buoyancy” is likely to be negated by un-avoidable inputs and inevitable losses.

Guest Speaker—Gary Lowe

“Just when you thought the Government couldn't help”.

Gary Lowe is a Business Development Manager for Dept State Development, Business & Innovation. His role is to act as an advocate and to facilitate State Government assistance through a range of government services and programs. Before joining government late last year, Gary held senior management positions with: Optus Communications, Pri-mus Telecom, Adecco, Skilled Engineering and NEC Aus-tralia.

G ary took away many inventors’ fears of dealing with the government, by taking us through a case study of a Dubai company ACME Fuels that was able to turn waste cooking oil from

McDonalds into bio diesel. The waste oil is collected from restaurants free of charge then recycled into bio diesel fuel which is sold back to McDonald’s to use in their trucks. The fuel is emission free, and attracts no carbon tax. The first refinery was formed in Dubai with encouragement from Sheikh Mohammed who put a huge emphasis on recycling

Problem Corner

This is a regular session at each meeting where we ask for members who have a problem sourcing a product or ser-vice to ask the meeting if anyone can help.

When someone thinks they can help, the person and that member get together during the supper period that fol-lows.

One inventor did have a problem of his own concerning product liability insurance and whether it should it be dif-ferent for each individual product or can there be just one insurance policy that covers liability across the entire prod-uct range? Our President felt you had to take out individ-ual insurances and our committee are looking into this.

In 1972, Buzz Invented a “Letter Bomb” Detector and joined the Victorian branch of the Inventors Association to seek advice on patents, production and marketing. He had to quickly produce products to P.M.G orders. His early models have saved nine lives, are used world wide, by Aus-tralian and Foreign Embassies, Federal & State Govern-ments, Multinational & commercial companies & are still in production.

Buzz had us in fits of laughter as he told us about a govern-ment security agent accusing him of encouraging the Black

September terrorist movement to make and send letter bombs to prominent Zionists in Australia in order to im-prove sales of his product. You can enjoy this very interest-ing short session on Youtube by clicking here.

Crowd funding workshop for inventors

Bryan Vadas of iPledg promised to hold a workshop to teach inventors how to raise funds through crowd funding and true to his word that is now a reality. He has set up a webpage for this event which you can visit by clicking here.

The venue is Alvie Hall, corner of Hight Street Road and Alvie Road Mount Waverley on Saturday November 23rd starting at 8.30am, cost $20 for the day.

To show us how it works he has set up a crowd funding site about the workshop. We actually pledge our money for the event on the site. Very clever. If you want the actual inter-net address it is http://ipledg.com/l/crowd-funding-melbourne

Silly Invention competition is still on. If you’ve got one like this pasta cooler let us know about it.

Buzz Cousins (life member IAA (Vic)) was this month’s pre-

senter of Problem Corner and kept us amused by talking

about a few inventing problems of his own!
