IDp Lab/Co-operative | Assignment One | Jan 27th 2010
Why precedents?
● Examples of designed projects or design processes that have a relevance for the type of design one is beginning to address.
Precedents can also be drawn from a wider range of examples of similar processes or functions.

IDp Lab/Co-operative | Assignment One | Jan 27th 2010
What to look for?
This could include ● design projects and methods —service design, an architecture
studio project, a product design ● something in the everyday that functions collaboratively — a
newspaper, community garden, the kitchen in a restaurant.
The goal is to look at the nature and shape of the collaboration and what it creates, or doesn’t create.
Find a precedent for collaborative practices and/or collaborative solutions.

Outcomes
A slide presentation summarizing:
● The precedent (what is the collaborative process or solution?) ● How does it work?● Who is involved?● What technologies does it use or are necessary to make it work?● What are the benefits of the practice or solution?● What are the challenges?● And - make a concluding analysis of your own about the precedent
( > a critique that takes into consideration the stated goals of the collaboration, the process, the outcome(s), and your observations about any questions you have about it )

Rules of the game
1 minute presentation in class, WITHOUT TALKING
(pecha-kucha alike)
> Powerpoint or PDF slideshow at 4 seconds per slide (roughly) , auto-playing
Goal: to summarize the precedent and your analysis in a compact, clear form. You should have no more than 14 slides (2 per point above), with a mix of image and text slides to tell your story, or a recorded voice over. (> videoclip)
> "database of cases" of the course
