Individual Development Accounts (IDA), an extremely successful national asset building tool for low to moderate income people, was developed at Washington University in St. Louis. IDA empowers people to get out of debt, receive important, appropriate and significant financial education, build personal assets in life, and pride in ownership and accountability.

Participants can apply double or triple their earned savings for 4 major areas of life improvement: 1) Home ownership or repair, 2) small business establishment or expansion, 3) post secondary education or certification for employment, and 4) purchase of a vehicle. Additional education, specific to successful application of the matched funds to the proposed asset purchase and use, is provided by Project HOPE, congregations, and community partners, including banks, businesses, and other higher education and financial institutions.

Project HOPE, working in cooperation with nationally recognized, St. Louis based Justine Petersen Housing and Reinvestment Corp, Inc. demonstrate how your donation and tax dollars benefit the community while contributing, for qualified employees, a very significant benefit – a legitimate opportunity for personal advancement and the chance to build a stabilizing asset.

IDA’s build the habit of savings and asset building, provide very necessary and significant financial education for our participants, and empower people to get out of debt. This means a more stable employee who is interested in personal, positive growth that benefits your business and the community. The MO tax credit for IDA’s allows you to focus your tax dollars on your own community.

“The IDA tax credit’s financial education portion, linked with our congregation’s mentoring, actually helped us face our major marital obstacles and saved our marriage! The IDA gave us real HOPE to purchase our new home, a dream come true!” (the Goodlucks)
