Editor’s letterWelcome to ICT for Education’s 2017 Norwich conference, an event that I hope will inform and inspire your teaching of computing and use of ICT across the school curriculum. Today’s conference will be led by Mikes Berry, ICT education expert and principal lecturer of computing education at the University of Roehampton.

Miles will be joined by Louise Stone, a higher level teaching assistant at Recreation Road Infant School, who will discuss the benefits of digital leaders; and Dan Leighton, Director of Education at the New School Partnership, who will consider if and when teaching and learning will be transformed by educational technology.

Our guest speaker today is Andy Hutt, an educational ICT consultant who will present an informative and entertaining session covering some of the many free and low-cost ICT tools that can enhance your work in the classroom. If you’ve seen Andy at conference before, don’t leave the room, his presentation today is full of new ideas.

If you have questions for the conference speakers, join Question Time, a session that will answer your questions and debate topical issues. Then there is ICT Reviews Live!, an independent product review session that will put suppliers to the test and give you real insight into their product capabilities. And don’t miss the exhibition hall, where you can explore products and services to support teaching and learning at your school.

The refreshments are on us today, so do take a break and have a chat with colleagues, speakers and suppliers.

I hope this brochure will help you navigate the conference and maximise your time. Have a great day and I look forward to meeting you.Best Regards,

Sarah Underwood Editor

Coding across the curriculumMiles Berry, principal lecturer, computing education, University of Roehampton

Now computing is firmly established as a subject in many schools, there is a great opportunity for pupils to apply their newly acquired programming skills in the context of some of the other subjects they study. Ranging from Monte Carlo methods for estimating π, to composing music with Sonic Pi, Miles will present a quick tour of a few ways pupils can practice programming in meaningful contexts and deepen their knowledge and understanding of other disciplines.

Ideas to challenge your childrenLouise Stone, higher level teaching assistant, Recreation Road Infant School

Children make the best teachers – so why not give them the opportunity to do this in a powerful and meaningful way? Employing student digital leaders in your school will have a positive impact, not only in the classroom, but across your whole community. Louise will give you practical ways to get the digital leader ball rolling and ideas to challenge your children (and teachers) – like running your own radio station (and it’s free!).

Stand 17: Computing At School

The Computing At School group (CAS) aims to promote the teaching of Computing at school. CAS was born out of our excitement with our discipline, combined with a serious concern that many students are being

The Computing At School group (CAS) is a grass roots organisation, whose energy, creativity, and leadership comes from its members. CAS is a collaborative partner with the BCS through the BCS Academy of Computing, and has formal support from other industry partners. Membership is open to everyone, and is very broad, including teachers, parents, governors, exam boards, industry, professional societies, and universities. We speak for the discipline of computing at school level, inc. FE, and not for any particular interest group.
