The aurora provides the only means of following the spatio-temporal evolution of (in this case) the ionospheric projection of the Earthward limit of strong pitch angle scattering in the CPS.

This provides a powerful complement to MHD simulations and empirical models [eg., Wanliss et al, 2000].

Other important boundaries :

The “Optical b2i” correlates very well with the inclination of the field.

This result is consistent with DMSP & GOES observationsas discussed by Sergeev & Newell.

• poleward border of the (bright) proton aurora

• 630 nm “polar cap shelf”

• equatorward boundary of the 630 nm brightness

Donovan et al. 2003.

The primary objective is to understand the causal connections between specific inner magnetosphere and mid-tail events.

Ground-based Helping THEMIS Meet Mission Objectives

Secondary & tertiary objectives relate to dayside and RB physics.

Themis provides an excellent organizing theme for a coordinated and integrated multi-instrument ground-based program that will impact THEMIS and facilitate new stand-alone science.

Figure taken without permission from Chappell.

Due to our lack of understanding of the origin of the plasma sheet, and because of the real possibility that ions of ionospheric origin play a role in destabilizing the CPS, there is significant synergy between ePoP and THEMIS. See, for example, Cully et al. [JGR 2001].
