Global food and nutritional security is a major area of concern. With the ever-increasing demand for more food, new approaches are being tried for increasing agricultural production. The need for adoption of plant biotechnology for augmenting food quantity and quality is being felt. This is because the increase in yield for most of the crops has nearly reached a plateau, and consciousness towards health foods has increased. Moreover, it is not possible to meet these demands by traditional technologies alone. The plant biotechnology should help us through the Gene Revolution in increasing unit area productivity by improving agronomic performance, and also in developing nutritionally superior and functional foods. The best example where a single gene has revolutionized the pest management is the use of Bt gene in cotton. Today the largest area is under Roundup Ready soybean, tolerant to weedicide glyphosate. The Golden Rice rich in beta-carotene is in the pipeline. The area under transgenic crops is increasing exponentially. Similarly, development of crop varieties by using marker-assisted selection (MAS) is another option for increasing the pace of crop variety development. We do have successful examples of varieties developed through MAS. In addition, rapid advances and development in genome research in the recent past has resulted in the generation of large data set of DNA and protein sequences from different prokaryotes and eukaryotes. World over the genomes of more than 1600 species have been sequenced. The massive amount of data is being generated by genomics approaches like genome sequences, gene expression and protein structures analysis. These data will have to be used in the best possible way by using various functional genomics and bioinformatics approaches. In view of rapid advances made and expected in various areas of biotechnology, the Society for Plant Biochemistry and Biotechnology and the National Research Centre on Plant Biotechnology, in association with the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi have planned to organize the First International Conference on "Plant Biotechnology for Food Security : New Frontiers" from February 21 -24, 2012 at the National Agricultural Science Centre, New Delhi, India to bring together the best minds in the areas of Plant Biotechnology from India and abroad.

About Delhi
Delhi, the capital city of the Republic of India, is one of India's fastest growing metropolitan cities. It has
sprawled over the west bank of the river Yamuna. The city has two distinct parts, Old Delhi and New
Delhi.
Delhi has some of the finest museums in the country. Its boutiques and shopping arcades offer access
to a wealth of traditional and contemporary crafts, from all over the country. It is one of the fastest
expanding cosmopolitan cities in this part of the world. It represents a unique amalgam of ancient
history with modernity. Magnificence of the relics of ancient (5000 years old) Hindu era, glory of Mughal
Monuments and the grandeur of modern buildings and shopping centres constitute today's Delhi. The
varied cultural activities offer myriad experiences, which speak of the unity in diversity of this country.
At a short distance from Delhi, 200 km south east is the famous city of Agra where Taj Mahal, one of the
seven wonders of the modern world is located. About 260 km south west of Delhi is located the pink city
of Jaipur, the glory of various kings beautifully reflected in the magnificence of its palaces. In the north
of Delhi are picturesque ranges of the Himalayas, including the Kashmir valley, dreamland of the
tourists.
The famous Tiger Reserve, the Corbett National Park is about 6 hrs drive from Delhi. The park is located
at the hills of Kumaon and proves a unique experience of Elephant Safari. For bird watchers, the Keola
Deo Ghana Bird Sanctuary at Bharatpur is about 180 km from Delhi. The Sanctuary harbours the most
exquisite birds from all over the globe.
