JULY 2011

IOn Sunday, May 29, members of ICEJ Canada’s Grafted group joined in the

UJA Federation of Toronto’s Walk With Israel. The annual walk is one of the largest Israeli solidarity events in the world. This year, approximately 12,000 people participated, raising almost $500,000 for charitable projects, such as helping Ethiopian immigrants in Bat Yam and victims of rocket attacks in Sderot.

Proudly sporting our red ICEJ Canada t-shirts and caps, we arrived early

in the morning and joined the crowds of eager walkers at registration. The day kicked off with a high-energy performance by pop singer Shawn Desman. We acquired front-row spots by the stage and cheered

enthusiastically during the opening ceremonies. The walk wound through downtown Toronto, with more musical performances, giveaways of food and other items and joyful camaraderie along the way.

We joined the masses of walkers, carrying an ICEJ banner and

large Israeli and Canadian flags. Our enthusiasm prompted questions from other walkers, who were touched to find out that a Christian group had come to support Israel and Toronto’s Jewish community.

At the end of the walk, our tired but happy group enjoyed the UJA’s

celebratory BBQ and festival. It had been a heartwarming, exciting and just

plain fun experience. We had shown that Christians not only stand with Israel—but walk with Israel as well.

ICEJ Canada was pleased to participate in Israel Day at Mel Lastman Square on June 5 and had an information table well-staffed with Grafted Director Christine Uy, Intercession for Israel co-leaders Jackie Clarke and Peter Kuskis and ICEJ members Jean Singh and Carrie Taylor.

The weather was sunny and warm for this outdoor event as our team fielded an array of questions from curious passers-by inquiring about ICEJ’s activities in Israel, perspectives on Zionism and the history of the modern state of Israel. A film crew recording a documentary about the

Israeli-Palestinian conflict interviewed Peter, who responded with an affirmation of the Jewish people’s historical ties to the land of Israel rooted in the Abrahamic Covenant described in Genesis 17.

Many other conversations occurred throughout the day as team members spoke from an evangelical Christian perspective as friends of Israel fulfilling ICEJ’s mandate to comfort the Jewish people in preparing the way of the Lord (Isaiah 40:1-3). Many thanks to those who stopped by our booth to say hello and ask questions. Shalom!
