Focus and intensity are two factors that an athlete can’t live without. The ability to

stay in control of one’s ability, despite outside stimulus coming against you is extremely valuable. While you are maintaining this controlled positive thought pattern you must also bring your best to the table in everything you do. To tackle the task with unrelenting passion and fervor and leaving nothing in the tank. It’s one of the greatest of accomplishments, to give all that you are towards a goal without regret. These attributes are very important in the gym and for the game of hockey. If an athlete cannot focus on his workouts he will most likely not complete them or take breaks which would affect the quality of the workout. In even a worst case a lifter could get hurt by not performing a lift correctly or not being aware of the world around him. If an athlete

does not work hard and bring intensity he can only receive results equal to the level output. It is not good enough to be good, it is not even good enough to show up, and you actually have to perform every task with excellence in order to achieve a most excellent result. On the Ice lack of focus leads to mistakes. A lack of intensity leads to lost battles, missed opportunities and ultimately losses. Desire is the root of success because in order to have something you have to want it. If you don’t want something you won’t take on steps to achieve it. Sometimes just wanting it more can make you do things you may have not thought achievable. Peter Twist has a stellar quote in his facilities …. “Today I will give everything I have, what I keep inside I will lose forever.”■

Cosmo’s Tip of the MonthGroin StrainsBy Cosmo Clarke

Groin injuries are pretty common in ice hockey because the diagonal stride used in skating puts the groin (adductor) muscles under strain. This injury usually occurs

with sudden changes in direction. It is acute in nature but can develop into a chronic issue.

RICE(Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation)Early stretching should be avoided, but usually 3-4 days after the injury should be taken off prior to trying any stretching or strengthening. This does not mean you cannot try gentle range of motion exercises (but within your pain free range only). Example of this would be riding a stationary bike.

Prevention:

1) Proper Dynamic Warm Up consisting of light jog, high knees, lateral shuffles, back-pedaling, forward walking lunges w/half twist, reverse walking lunges.

2) Light Static Stretches going to the point of tension and not pain. Hold stretch for a count of 10-15 seconds while breathing regularly to ensure body is relaxing.

3) Strengthening should be performed every other day as strengthening exercises cause muscles to tighten. Some strengthening exercises to consider are ball/pillow squeezes whether lying down or standing, slide board from side to side push, simultaneous leg adduction on slide board bring feet together lateral lunges with 5 second hold, forward lunge with 5 second hold, reverse lunge with 5 second hold, cable or elastic band hip adduction and abduction.

Players have to take some responsibility in this by preparing off-season and in-season maintenance by strengthening these muscles using some of the exercises listed above. ■
