    International Plumbing Code

The 2006 International Plumbing Code (IPC

) continues to emphasize both prescriptive andperformance-related provisions. The code change cycles have made many improvements to the 2006IPC that provide clarity of content and resolve common interpretation issues.

ScopeThe scope of the 2006 IPC continues toencompass the initial design of the plumbingsystem, the installation and construction ofplumbing systems and the maintenance ofoperating systems. All plumbing systems that areprovided for utilization by and for the generalsafety and well-being of the occupants of abuilding are intended to be governed by the code.

Standard UseAs both a prescriptive and performance-basedcode, the IPC contains numerous references tostandards that are used to regulate materials andmethods of construction. A standard that isincorporated into the code through the codedevelopment process is an enforceable part of thecode. Standards are referenced throughout thecode and are listed in Chapter 14.

    202 202 Definitions

Branch Interval is further defined by referring to the distance betweenconnections of horizontal branches to a drainage stack. Measurements are

taken down the stack from the highest horizontal branch connection. [SeeFigures 202(1) and 202(2)].

    202 202 Definitions

New definitions for Flow Control (vented) and Grease Removal Device,Automatic are added. These new definitions correlate with the revisedrequirements for grease removal devices and rate of flow controls found inChapter 10. The definition for grease trap was deleted because all greasetraps are now called grease interceptors. [See Figure 202(3)].

    403.1 403.1

    Outdoor seating area

    occupant load

A new footnote is added to Table 403.1 and requires outdoor seating area

occupant loads to be added to indoor occupant loads for A-1, A-2 and A-3occupancies for the purpose of determining the required number of fixtures.

    403.4 403.6Required public toiletfacilities

Public toilet facilities cannot be accessed through kitchens and storagespaces. (See Figure 403.6).

    406.3 406.3Clothes washer wasteconnection

The required text recognizes that gravity draining clothes washing machinesneed to discharge to a waste receptor such as a trench drain. (See Figure406.3).

    408.3 NEW Bidet water temperature

An ICC appointed Ad Hoc Committee on Water Temperature and Controlevaluated the types of hazards and applications where scalding and thermalshock can occur, identifying plumbing fixtures and equipment that requiretemperature control limits and the appropriate standards for control devices. The code requires a maximum discharge water temperature from bidetfittings of 110NF to be provided by a water temperature limiting device

conforming to ASSE 1070. [See Figures 408.3(1) and (2)].

416.5 NEWTempered water for publichand-washing facilities

The code requires that tempered water be delivered from public hand-washing facilities. Tempered water must be provided by an approved watertemperature limiting device that conforms to ASSE 1070. [See Figures416.5(1) and (2)].

419.1 419.1 UrinalsWaterless urinals are distinguished from water-supplied urinals. [SeeFigures 419.1(1) and (2)].

    419.2 419.2Substitution for waterclosets

Substitution allowance is reduced to 50% maximum for occupancies otherthan A and E (remains 67% for A and E).

421.5 NEW Access to pumpA new section is added to address the access requirements for whirlpooltub circulation pumps. [See Figures 421.5(1) and (2)].

    424.4 NEW Multiple (gang) showers

Water temperature limiting devices for gang showers supplied with a single-tempered water supply pipe must comply with ASSE 1069 or CSA B125.The option of using an individually controlled balanced-pressure,thermostatic or combination balanced-pressure/thermostatic valve for eachshower head requires that such controls conform to ASSE 1016 or CSAB125. [See Figures 424.4(1) and (2)].

    424.5 NEWBathtub and whirlpoolbathtub valves

Bathtubs and whirlpool bathtubs must be provided with a water temperaturelimiting device that conforms to ASSE 1070, except where such protectionis otherwise provided by a combination tub/shower valve that conforms toASSE 1016 or CSA B125. The maximum setting of such devices is limitedto 120

    N

    F. [See Figures 424.5(1) and (2)].

Where tempered water is supplied in nonresidential occupancies for bathingand washing purposes, it must be tempered by a device conforming toASSE 1070. The tempered water is limited to a maximum temperature of

    110F.

    608.16.10 NEWCoffee machines andnoncarbonated beveragedispensers

New requirements address backflow protection for the water supplyconnection to coffee machines and noncarbonated beverage dispensers. The connections must be protected against backflow by a deviceconforming to ASSE 1022 or by an air gap.

906.1 906.1 Distance of trap from ventWater closets are now exempt from the trap to vent distance rule. [SeeFigure 906.1(1)].

906.2 906.2 Venting of fixture drainsNew language states that the total fall in a fixture drain resulting from pipeslope must not exceed the inside diameter of the fixture drain. (See Figure906.2).

910.2 910.2 Stack installationThe text has been clarified regarding offsets in the stack both above thehighest fixture drain connection and below the lowest fixture drainconnection. (See Figure 910.2).

910.3 910.3 Stack ventThe revised text makes it apparent that the stack vent for waste-stack ventsystems can connect to vent headers with other vents. (See Figure 910.3).

912.2 912.2 InstallationAs revised, this section now allows a vertical pipe component for all fixturesthat are permitted to connect to a combination drain and vent system, including floor drains. (See Figure 912.2).
