FILM > We always look forward to INVERNESS FILM FESTIVAL and this year’s event, running from 06–10 NOV at EDEN COURT looks like being as much of a reason as ever for spending the duration plonked in seats at EC’s well-appointed cinemas. As always there’s such a rich array of flicks for our delectation that the real problem’s going to be deciding what to miss out in order to catch up on trivialities like eating and sleeping. You can see the full line-up on the inside back pages of this issue and read more about them at the festival website (invernessfilmfestival.com), but here are just some of the delights on offer.Scottish premiers abound, with GRAVITY 3D and DON JON opening and closing proceedings (more p10) and Jude Law returning to the big screen with DOM HEMINGWAY on 06 NOV at 8pm. The latter is blackly comic crime caper from the producer of Sexy Beast and director of The Matador about a safecracker released from prison and looking for money he’s owed.

Rather more cerebral, but probably equally wild is another Scottish premiere, KILL YOUR DARLINGS (06 NOV, 7.30pm) with Harry Potter (or Daniel Radcliffe as he tiresomely insists on being called) taking on no less a role than that of beat poet Allen Ginsberg in the true story of his murdered English teacher in 1944, a pivotal event that was to define his friendship with Kerouac, Burroughs et al and shape the creative movement to come.Kerouac reappears in BIG SUR (08 NOV, 6pm), Michael Polish’s account of the writer’s alcoholic retreat that inspired the extraordinary novel that gives the film its title. For many Kerouac aficionados, it was a better book than On The Road and this movie goes some way to explaining why.

One of the most exciting strands of the festival is that of “Reappropriated Cinema”, looking at the way old classics are being revisited, recut, referenced and remade. Whether it’s James Benning’s full-length scene-by-scene remake of EASY RIDER (08 NOV, 3pm) filmed in the same locations as the original, but using the director’s own favourite music, or shorts like Antoni Pinent’s experimental cut-up of Grease, called G/R/E/A/S/E and an 8 minute version of 2001: A Space Odyssey (both 10 NOV, from noon) there’s much to enjoy.

What else. Palme D’Or winner BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOUR (08 NOV, 8pm), Robert Redford tour de force ALL IS LOST (08 NOV, 8.15pm), magnificent performances by kids in WE ARE THE BEST (09 NOV, 8pm) and I DECLARE WAR (09 NOV, 8.15pm) - sadly both showing at almost the same time - seasons of New Scottish and Middle Eastern Cinema, Late Night Thrills and much more. Festival director PAUL TAYLOR reckons this is the best one yet and he couldwell be right. invernessfilmfestival.com

MUSIC >A host of fine gigs at IG:LU in Church Street

this month with a rustic Americana vibe, drawing on

the influence of the accompanying ADVENTURES OF

CIGARBOX DON exhibition running from 28 OCT–11 NOV.

On FRI 01 NOV it’s DUMB INSTRUMENT playing under

the banner SUFFERING FROM SCOTTISHNESS and

spreading their Michael Marra meets Ivor Cutler sound,

complete with lyrics about everything from unicorns to

Cliff Richard. Support comes from the estimable SLIM

PANATELLAS featuring the aforementioned Cigarbox Don.

A couple of days later on SUN 03 NOV it’s the turn of

RED BLUES from the “Spey Valley River Delta” to get the

joint jumping with old-time bluegrass and jug band tunes,

the audience encouraged to fill up their jug and bring their

own instruments. Again you can expect some storming

contributions from Don. More audience participation

on SUN 10 NOV when CBD (as we’ll be calling him by

then), hosts the HAND-MADE HOKUM HOE DOWN where

you’re again encouraged to bring your own instruments,

including washboards, kazoos and the like. Should be fun

and it’s free. Before that, The Slim Panatellas return on

SAT 09 NOV to support “Highland hillbilly bootleggers”

THE FEDERALS. Don will be joining both them and blues

songstress EMMA MITCHELL for what promises to be a

right old knees up.

Sounds of a slightly different stripe, but again at IG:LU

when TOBY MICHAELS ROLLING DAMNED bring their

self-avowed “rock’n’rock” are set to play their final

Inverness show of the year on on FRI 15 NOV. Support

comes from THE MANIC SHINE. Should be good.

See www.theIG.LU or visit facebook/IGLUvenue

FILM > Another film event worth getting to this month is classic Japanese silent comedy ‘I WAS BORN BUT…’ - with LIVE piano accompaniment from FORRESTER PYKE. Inverness Film Fans’ (who host the event at Eden Court on Tue 26 Nov as part of their ‘Through A Child’s Eyes’ season) GEORGINA COBURN spoke with him - the full fascinating interview is at whatsonhighlands.com - but here’s a teaser to get you started…GC: Can you tell me a bit more about “the basic style”- what are its foundations for you as a musician? What are some of the factors, on screen or during the performance that encourage you to explore different levels of emotion in a film? Or this particular film?FP: Dramatic action lends itself to the use of diminished 7th chords, while sad emotional scenes would have the use of minor chords, happy scenes, major chords and love scenes, secondary sevenths, all used with appropriate rhythms. This particular film contains a wealth of emotions, using all these.

If you go down to INVERNESS MUSEUM AND ART GALLERY today you’re in for a big surprise. In fact there’ll be all-the-bears-that-ever-there-were related astonished delight right through until 04 JAN as IMAG hosts TEDDY BEAR STORY [1], a touring exhibition organised by the V&A Museum Of Childhood.

It’s a positively heart-warming exhibition featuring nearly 100 teddy bears, including many rare and diverse example, as well as teddies from books, fi lms and television programmes and teddy bear merchandise. Divided into themes including German Bears, British Bears and Caring Sharing Bears, the exhibition is drawn entirely from the V&A’s extensive collections. Highlights include a French mechanical bear from the 1880s, an early German bear made by the famous Steiff company from about 1905, a small English bear held in the pocket of a soldier during the First World War and a classic Paddington Bear from 1960s.This exhibition has so far been seen by over 169,000 visitors in its journey round the country and if you don’t get all wistful/claim to have something in your eye when you take in all the cuddly little fellas, then truly you have a heart of stone.

Another essential date for your diary is the STRATHPEFFER ART FAIR at STRATHPEFFER PAVILION from 21–24 NOV. This annual event is always hugely popular with over 400 pieces on sale from a hundred artists. For details of opening times see strathpefferpavilion.org

Finally a reminder to check out the excellent ADVENTURES OF CIGARBOX DON exhibition at IG:LU in CHURCH ST from 28 OCT-11 NOV, with the creative whirlwind that is Donald Jack showcasing not just art and homemade musical instruments, but even a series of live shows. George Clooney’s new fi lm, GRAVITY, is out of this world. Literally. Or at least well above the stratosphere as it tells the tale of two astronauts (Clooney and Sandra Bullock) spinning out of control in space. It took a record $55million on its opening weekend and looks set to be just as successful here, vindicating director Alfonso Cuarón’s refusal to cede to bigwigs’ demands for fl ashbacks and all sorts of other lazy plot devices. It launches on 08 NOV but you can catch the Scottish Premiere as the opening event of the 11th EDEN COURT INVERNESS FILM FESTIVAL (EDEN COURT, 06–10 NOV) which you can read more about on pages 04/46/47. They’ve even hired in special equipment to show the 3D version (which has apparently left some viewers as giddy as the actors themselves). Don’t miss.

Gravity’s record might not last long if the latest instalment of HUNGER GAMES is as successful as the fi rst one. This one’s subtitled CATCHING FIRE (EC & Vue from 21 NOV) and fi nds Katniss and Peeta returning to compete against previous victors as a result of a games rule change. And it’s a heck of a lot better than that sounds.

One of the most eagerly anticipated fi lms of the year, Ridley Scott’s new action thriller, THE COUNSELLOR (Vue from 15 NOV, EC from 29 NOV) features an all star cast in front of and behind the camera. MICHAEL FASSBENDER heads up an A-list cast including PENELOPE CRUZ, CAMERON DIAZ, BRAD PITT and JAVIER BARDEM in the story of a greedy lawyer getting caught up in the world of drug traffi cking. With a screenplay by Cormac McCarthy it looks pretty special.

After last month’s The Fifth Estate (this month at EC from 15 NOV), BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH - who never, ever seems to take a day off, can also be seen this month in director DANNY BOYLE’s NT LIVE: FRANKENSTEIN (Vue 05 NOV, EC 11 NOV), the latest National Theatre play to be seen on the big screen in celebration of the theatre’s 50th anniversary. In a groundbreaking approach to performance, he and co-star JONNY LEE MILLER swapped the roles of creator and creature on different nights. Benny plays the monster at these screenings and if you want to see Miller playing the part, it’s at Eden Court on SUN 03 NOV.

Something rather special is an INVERNESS FILM FANS event at Eden Court on TUE 26 NOV. Part of their THROUGH THE EYES OF A CHILD season, I WAS BORN BUT… is a classic silent comedy from legendary Japanese director YASUJIRÔ OZU, made in 1932. At this performance there’ll be live piano accompaniment from FORRESTER PYKE, who is a master of the art. He’ll be doing a Q&A afterwards, but if you can’t wait until then, check out our interview elsewhere in this issue and online at www.whatsonhighlands.com

Also recommended are: DON JON (EC from 29 NOV) directed by and starring JOSEPH GORDON-LEVITT alongside SCARLETT JOHANSSON, telling the story of how real love matches up to online fantasy; talking of which, Marvel’s latest sees the return of fan-throbs CHRIS HEMSWORTH, TOM HIDDLESTON and NATALIE PORTMAN in THOR: THEDARK WORLD (Vue from 30 OCT) more at: whatsonhighlands.com

The recent outdoor production of The Tempest at Belladrum Estate was, according to those in attendance, something of a triumph. And, for some, a revelation - swept away by the energy of the performance and the dynamism of presenting it in such a bold fashion. Proof then, that The Bard’s works still possess the power and verve to impress. Perhaps that al fresco show was one that should have been required viewing for local youngsters, demonstrating that when done right the plays can be every bit as gripping and accessible as modern stories. And, importantly, ensuring that the enthusiasm for Shakespeare’s timeless melding of language and narrative is passed down to a whole new generation.

That’s much of the aim behind the SHAKESPEARE SCHOOLS FESTIVAL, an initiative which works with schools all over the UK, making it possible for them to stage abridged Shakespeare productions in their local professional theatre. In this case that’s at EDEN COURT on 04 NOV, when local youngsters will be showcasing the result of their immersion in Will’s centuries-straddling glories and hopefully showing that even today they can be inspiring for performers and audiences alike.

Elsewhere for kids it’s all about the build-up to the festive season and you can read more about the turning on of the Christmas Lights on our Specials page (28). To really get into the mood, the under fi ves might want to head along to the LITTLE ELVES CHRISTMAS PARTY at EDEN COURT on 01 DEC, a jam-packed hour of singing, dancing, games and creative play. Santa’s workshop is a busy place at this time of year, so bring your Little Elves along to help out and let off some steam. Make sure to wear red and green. CLUBBINGCLASSICAL FOLK JAZZ/WORLD ROCK

> CLUBBING > CLASSICAL > FOLK > JAZZ/WORLD > ROCK > MORE… >

Where Have You Been?Plenty of musical turns for your pleasure this month, kicking off with the welcome return of MYLO [1], the musician/producer/DJ from Skye who seems to have been hiding in a cave for the past few years. Perhaps best known for remixing the likes of Scissor Sisters and Amy Winehouse, he’ll perhaps include those when he plays a DJ set at IRONWORKS on 02 NOV.

Another face from the past putting in an appearance is none other than RICK ASTLEY [2], who’s coming to INVERNESS LEISURE on SAT 09 NOV as part of their Live In The City initiative. Pete Waterman always reckoned Astley had the best voice of anyone he ever worked with, which he’ll presumably be demonstrating alongside KATRINA (from ‘& The Waves’) and THE REAL THING, while the audience hollers incessantly for Never Gonna Give You Up.

It’s quite a month for acts that have you mumbling, “always wondered what happened to them” with another trio of bands also worthy of your attention. TRAVIS [3] at IRONWORKS on 18 NOV have confounded some of the more cynical critics with a comeback album that’s up there with their best, meaning they’ll have plenty of fi ne new songs to play alongside their huge roster of hits.

This month’s cover stars THE DARKNESS [4] have also recently released a well-received new album, but the focus of attention at IRONWORKS on 21 NOV will be on their astonishing debut, Permission To Land, which they’ll be playing in full to commemorate the tenth anniversary of its original introduction to the world. Expect something of a real life Spinal Tap, except without dead drummers and inappropriately sized stage furniture. See our Justin interview p18 >>>

THE SOUTH, who play SPECTRUM CENTRE on 23 NOV, are what remains of The Beautiful South after the departure of Paul Heaton. While he was arguably their real creative force, he left behind a fi ne body of work which Dave Hemingway and Ali Wheeler will undoubtedly be wheeling out.

More impressive back catalogue on show when BRIT FLOYD present P-U-L-S-E 2013 at EDEN COURT on 17 NOV. It’s the biggest show yet for one of the most successful tribute acts in the world, featuring note-for-note performances of fi ve full albums including Wish You Were Here, The Wall, The Division Bell and Animals, and in celebration of the 40th anniversary, Pink Floyd’s classic defi ning album The Dark Side of the Moon.

Finally a few essential dates for your diary if you’re into the more classical side of things. On FRI 15 NOV, BBC SCOTTISH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, conducted by Andrew Manze [5] come to EDEN COURT with a programme including pieces by Mozart, Tippett, Respighi and William Lawes, the latter once described by Charles I as the ‘father of musik’. Then, on 28 NOV, the ICM concert series continues at the TOWN HOUSE with an appearance by noted Latvian pianist ARTA ARNICANE [6]. And, of course, as Xmas approaches, no one will want to miss the HIGHLAND HOSPITALS EDEN COURT CAROL CONCERT on 24 NOV.

Love ‘em or hate ‘em, there’s no denying that The Darkness have always been fully committed to celebrating rock music’s larger-than-life majesty. So much so that the road to excess almost led to complete self-destruction. Fortunately they got themselves back on track and, over a decade after they began, reformed and released an album earlier this year, Hot Cakes, that demonstrated they still haven’t lost their affection for the grand absurdity of it all. You can expect to hear some of the latest stuff when they play Ironworks on Thu 21 Nov, but the night will be built around celebrating the tenth anniversary of their rip-roaring Permission To Land debut, with the album played in its entirety. Ahead of the gig, we caught up with frontman Justin Hawkins to fi nd out more.

It’s good to have you back. Do you feel full of renewed rock’n’roll vigour? Thank you. I feel as well as can be expected!

How different is it being in The Darkness now than when you fi rst started? Frankly it’s exactly the same, but my 28 year old angst has been replaced with 38 year old despair. It’s a similar feeling.

Take us back to the days of the pre-Darkness combo, Empire. What were they like? Great drummer, great guitarist, great bassist, terrible keyboard player!

It seems like The Darkness succeeded initially despite, rather than because of, the attitude of the big record companies. How much of what you did was inspired by proving them wrong? Proving people wrong was never the main inspiration but in some instances it was a lovely side bonus.

If The Darkness were to be played in a fi lm by real-life rock stars from history, who would take each band member’s role? David St

Hubbins would play me, Nigel Tufnel would play Dan, Derek Smalls would play Frankie and Ed would be played by Eric “Stumpy Joe” Childs.

The rock’n’roll lifestyle obviously took its toll, but there must have been times when it was all worth it. What are your favourite memories of that fi rst whirlwind of success? Smoking on private jets!

Now that those narcotic excesses are part of the past, have you found that sobriety and creativity make for good bedfellows? It’s all a bit awkward at fi rst but ultimately it’s a more rewarding experience.

What’s happening with the spin-off Hot Leg project? Absolutely nothing, say it again, huh!

This tour’s going to conclude with you playing your native Lowestoft for the fi rst time. Will it be that town’s most rock’n’roll moment ever? There hasn’t been a suitable venue for moderately successful touring rock bands in Lowestoft since... well, ages. But having said that, Ed, Dan and I grew up in Lowestoft, and wherever we go, that’s where the party is happening. Subsequently, Lowestoft is the most rock and roll town in England.

Before that though, there’s the gig in Inverness. Have you been up to the Highlands before? What are you expecting? We’ve been everywhere, but thanks to Frankie’s Highlander roots, we always anticipate a warm welcome and some mental crowd behaviour. Looking forward to it immensely.

And what should we expect? Blood sweat & sebum.

What next for The Darkness after this tour? Another lovely Christmas together!

So, Autumn comes hurtling in with the usual “you ain’t seen nothing yet” dip in temperature and you’re struck with the realisation that it’s not going to get warm again until mid-August. But, hey, at least we’ve got some of the traditional winter activities to perk us up inside.

First up is one of the real community treats in the form of the INVERNESS CIVIC BONFIRE & FIREWORKS DISPLAY at BUGHT PARK on TUE 05 NOV. Thousands of spectators always turn up for a pyrotechnic show that never disappoints and this year should be no exception. The event, which is one of the very biggest in Scotland, starts at 7pm with the bonfi re lit at 7.30pm and the fi reworks at 7.50pm.

Next on the Winter Festival agenda is the CHRISTMAS LIGHT SWITCH ON in INVERNESS CITY CENTRE on SUN 17 NOV. The Switch on itself is on the steps of the TOWN HOUSE at 6pm, but get there early to bag a good view of the Christmas Lights Show. Then it’s all off to the OLD HIGH CHURCH in Church Street for a rousing singalong with Santa and special guests in the now familiar DING DONG MERRILY OLD HIGH.

Details have also been released of what’s planned for the RED HOT HIGHLAND FLING on Hogmanay. As always, it’s in Northern Meeting Park Arena, with the familiar face of CRAIG HILL as host. Music comes from DOREC-A-BELLE, The RED HOT CHILLI PIPERS and SKERRYVORE. There’s also a children’s event, THE WEE HOT HIGHLAND FLING in the afternoon. More about all that next month.

Ken Kelman: Concerning language

Just a couple of points this month in a to-whom-it-may-concern sort of way, well maybe three, but certainly no more than four. When a play or a book or whatever is adapted for the big screen - in the vernacular “made into a movie” - said movie is an adaptation of the original play/book/poem etc. “Adaption” is not a word. Indeed it is underlined in red as I type this document and, if he were still around, the wee paper-clip guy would be saying something along the lines of “I see you’re trying to write ‘adaptation’ would you like me to spell it for you?” Why do people, for example a

certain Dawn French in a car insurance commercial, say “that’s concerning”? The word “concerning” means ‘about or regarding or involving’. That fuel costs are set to rise this winter is of concern to me it is not of itself “concerning”… though it may be concerning me in that it’s causing me some concern. I hope that clears up that one. A fi lm about someone’s life is called a biopic… that’s to say a bi-opic. It is not a bio-pic .. hint: it’s generally based on a bi-ography not a bio-graphy. And fi nally… dates. Christmas Day is December the twenty-fi fth… or, if you prefer, the twenty-fi fth

of December. It is not December twenty-fi ve. So why do fi lm trailers tell us that the new Stephen Spielberg, or whoever, blockbuster is in cinemas ‘October two’? - it’s bad enough that we have to read text speak in text messages without having to hear it spoken too. In summary (for example): Michael Douglas starred in the biopic “Behind the Candelabra” – a fi lm adaptation of a biography of Liberace. It’s a fi lm concerning itself with the life story of a fl amboyant pianist. It opened in cinemas on June the seventh.

SPORTBALLATHLETIC COMBAT EXTREME RACING

INVERNESS CALEDONIAN THISTLE and ROSS COUNTY have had contrasting starts to the season though prior to the international break, both teams immediately did the opposite of what had gone before, ICT getting thumped by St Johnstone and County securing a well-deserved win against Aberdeen that fi nally seemed to be kicking their season into gear. Now’s the time for both teams to consolidate especially as for ICT, with Terry Butcher, Maurice Malpas and Richie Foran all due to renegotiate contracts in the summer, the future of all three and indeed the club itself could be shaped by what happens in the next few months.ICT get a chance for revenge against ST JOHNSTONE with a home match on 23 NOV, while before that there’s another match at the Caledonian Stadium, this time against KILMARNOCK on 02 NOV. An away game against Hibs in between means they’ll be expecting nine points from November…County meanwhile will be looking to beat CELTIC when the league leaders come to Dingwall on 09 NOV for a televised lunchtime game, memories still relatively fresh of how they came so close to taking all three points in the corresponding early season fi xture last time round. Their two away games in the month against Hearts and St Mirren look defi nitely winnable if they can maintain the sort of effort they showed against Aberdeen.

The recent Loch Ness Marathon showed what a gorgeous backdrop the area can be for sporting events so it’s good to see the organisers taking advantage of the fact with the announcement that next year there’ll be a special cycle race around the water - ETAPE LOCH NESS - starting and ending in Inverness. The 67 mile route (with 900m of ascent) will take place on closed roads on SUN 04 MAY next year and is bound to attract loads of competitors, especially with cycling’s recent boom in popularity. You’d be well advised to get your name down for proceedings as soon as possible, so for more details see www.etapelochness.com

THEATRECultural Creation

33

Sometimes it’s easy to forget just how geographically isolated we are up here, although just a few years back when Eden Court was being redeveloped and Ironworks was a mere twinkle in the developers’ eye, there was certainly a sense of just how much of a cultural desert we could become. All the more reason to give thanks for both of those venues then, with EDEN COURT particularly important in providing a wealth of shows that previously would have required a long hike to Aberdeen or the Central Belt.

Now it’s taking things further with a plan to produce shows with other companies, showing them fi rst here then touring them throughout the country. It’s a bold plan and the fi rst of the projects to see the light of day is a co-production with DUNDEE REP ENSEMBLE of Douglas Maxwell’s, PROMISES, PROMISES – a powerful play about a schoolteacher losing control. Dundee Rep’s most recent visit up here was with Sunshine On Leith which turned out quite well apparently, so expect this to be just as good when it comes to EC on 11&12 NOV as well as touring throughout the Highlands. This could be the start of something very special for the theatrical initiative up here.

More drama worth checking out comes in the form of the two-woman show LIFEBOAT [1] at EDEN COURT on 13 &14 NOV. Presented by the excellent Catherine Wheels Company, it’s the true story of two 15 year old girls adrift in said lifeboat after a ship from Liverpool bound for Canada was torpedoed and sank in 1940.

There’s no end to the regular stream of stand-ups making their way here and we’re particularly well served this month with visits from ARDAL O’HANLON [2] (EC, 14 NOV), DANIEL SLOSS [3] (15 NOV) and CRAIG CAMPBELL [4] (IRONWORKS, 16 NOV), all heartily recommended. More laughs at THE HITCHHIKER’S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY RADIO SHOW LIVE [5] (EC, 10 NOV) providing a fresh take on Douglas Adams’ classic creation. The humour is supplemented with a live band, HD projections and Lord Of The Rings star Billy Boyd as the Voice Of The Book.

There are also a couple of treats in store at EDEN COURT for fans of the dancing thing. On 20 NOV hip hop theatre pioneer JONZI D [6] comes from Sadler’s Wells with LYRIKAL FEARTA: THE LETTER & BROKEN LINEAGE which uses “choreopoetry” to explore his response to being offered an OBE. Old skool meets new in what’s bound to be an entertaining show.

If you enjoyed Mathew Bourne’s Highland Fling recently, you’ll be wanting to check out another of his creations, Spitfi re, which is being performed as part of a mixed bill of ballet, modern dance and storytelling by DAVID HUGHES DANCE under the banner SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW [7]. It’s at EC on 19 NOV.

Meet the ÜbergadgetWhy you need a ThermomixI will confess to being a bit of a kitchen gadget fanatic and my cupboards are bursting at the seams with machines I was convinced would change my life: fresh bread every morning from my cumbersome bread maker (I lasted a week), a blender for fresh soups and smoothies (so much washing up) a juicer (too time consuming), a food processor, a steamer, chocolate fountain (remember that kids party?) oh my, the list goes on and I made a vow that I would buy no more.

Until I met the Thermomix. A gadget to beat all gadgets. In fact, it is the gadget that can replace all gadgets because the makers claim it is at least 10 machines in one ‒ heck you can even throw your weighing scales away.

The list of what it can do is endless and the fact it has been a bit of a trade secret for many years now - Heston Blumenthal apparently swears by them - makes it quite an intriguing prospect. So what does the Thermomix do exactly? Well it:• Weighs - with built-in electronic scales• Grates - nuts, cheese, chocolate, parmesan• Mills - rice, grains and pulses to fl our• Purées - vegetables, fruits, baby food• Grinds - coff ee beans, sugar to icing sugar, wet or dry spices• Blends - soups, smoothies, milkshakes and sauces• Cooks, Boils & Simmers - soups, sauces, preserves, pulses, complete meals• Steams - vegetables, meat, fi sh, fruits, rice, pasta• Crushes - ice, cocktails, ice creams, sorbet• Whisks - egg whites, cappuccino-style foam on soups and milk• Emulsifi es - salad dressings, mayonnaise, batters, cream• Kneads - bread dough, pizza dough, pasta dough, pastry, scones• Chops & Minces - nuts, herbs, vegetables, salads, meats• Heats baby food to 37OC• Holds chocolate at 37OC

Add some water and a dash of washing up liquid and it will even wash itself up!All of this with one bowl and one blade and in a fraction of the time it takes other gadgets. So what is the downside with this space saving, time saving unit? Well it’s the price, I’m afraid. A fairly hefty £885. I may just have to sell off all my other gadgets and invest the money in this magical device.

the best form of motivation. Look for small local races to keep you focussed and ensure you keep your ‘get up and go’ through the cold winter months. However simply living in a part of the world that becomes even more beautiful throughout the winter helps too. I find the Inverness Park run on Saturday mornings at Bought Park very helpful to keep you keen. Just meeting up and being around other like minded running enthusiasts is a great aid in motivation throughout the winter.

Hopefully we’ll see you competing in the Loch Ness Marathon again next year, in the mean time what races do you have lined up and what are your goals for 2014? All being well I hope to be back again next year as i enjoy this race so much, but I’m also looking for some new challenges and experiences for the next year.

Finally which charity will you be donating the £1000 prize money to? This year I would like to nominate the Hampstead Marie Curie Hospice in memory of Clare Chadwick. Her sister is collecting to show our family’s gratitude and thanks for all of their wonderful care and support shown earlier this year and to help them continue with their fantastic work in support of other families who may find themselves in similar difficult circumstances. Thank you.

We also caught up with Dawn Cooper and asked how she had enjoyed the day: “The Baxter’s Loch Ness Marathon and Festival of Running is a wonderful event of which the Highlands can be truly proud. From the youngest child taking part in his first fun run to the veteran marathon competitor completing a life-long ambition, everyone has their own motivation for running the race and each one sets out to do his best; whether that’s achieving a personal best time or simply managing to cross the finish line!

Although I have been involved with the event for several years, each year I am taken aback by the atmosphere. Runners of all ages and abilities challenge themselves whilst supporters cheer and clap along the route, and event officials and volunteers work hard to make it all happen. I personally think that the finish line by the side of the river Ness is the place to be. Here you can see the exhaustion, determination and then delight on each runner’s face. It’s wonderful to watch in amazement as some race to the line while others limp to the finish! What I most enjoy is hearing the roar of the crowd, watching the happy expressions of families and friends and witnessing the emotion of those taking part in memory of a loved one and raising funds for a charity close to their heart.”

The Cup is awarded to the first Highland resident to finish the Loch Ness Marathon. We caught up with him:

Hi Terry, congratulations on being the first person to retain the HSPC Gerald Cooper Memorial Cup! Wow!! I didnt realise that I was the first person to do so until now, So that’s a great feeling in itself. The Baxters Loch Ness Marathon is a magnificent event and one of the big highlights of the running calander so to do well is always very special.

It seems you missed the presentation of the trophy again this year?! I was there but unfortunately technology let us down on the day as my postcode was not flagged up by the timing provider as a Highland postcode at the time of the prize giving. After querying the result the organisers were very helpful and eventualy revised it.

This is your fifth time running the Loch Ness Marathon, on the four previous races you’ve run a personal best time, did you manage to make it five out of five? Yes i’m delighted to say that I did just manage to shave off another minute and a half to gain my

5th consecutive PB at the Loch Ness Marathon. It is a fantastic race with magnificent support all along the route and despite all of the hills it appears to be a great course for a PB.

What have you been up to running wise in the past year? The past 12 months have been my best yet thanks largely to joining my first running

club at the start of the year. The Cairngorm Runners are a friendly club that welcomes runners of all abilities and offers wonderful support towards development of runners through their own high levels of enthusiasm and dedication to running.

What gets you out of bed in the winter for those cold weather training runs? Setting yourself targets and chasing regular goals is

The perfect shaveWe would not want to be accused of ignoring the needs of the more delicate sex, men ‒ who have to endure something us ladies (mostly) escape ‒ the daily face shave. So, lets have a look at what makes for the perfect shave:

1: Steam ‒ Softening the bristles before a shave reduces the cutting force required to slice through the hairs. A steamy environment is the best softener of bristles. So a sink full of hot water should steam up the bathroom nicely.

2: Massage ‒ if you start by using a facial wash you not only degrease the skin but also the massaging action of your fi ngertips will lift the hairs and free any trapped hairs.

3: Go Softly ‒ most modern razors are designed to glide through the bristles so require very little pressure. If you are having to put in too much eff ort then it is time to replace your blade.

4: Protect Your Blade ‒ how long your blade lasts will depend on the density of your stubble and how often you shave but you should look to change the blade after around 14 shaves. To keep the blade in tip top condition you should not tap it out in the sink or clean it with an old toothbrush, simply rinse the razor thoroughly under a warm tap and store in an upright position.

5: Moisture, moisture, moisture ‒ the drier your skin the more ridges the razor will have to fi ght against. A well moisturised face will be much smoother and therefore easier to shave. Moisturising your face twice a day, after a shave and before bed, will have a noticeable and long-term benefi t on your shaving regime.

So there you go guys - don’t say we don’t do anything for you!

The Filling Station8‒10 Academy Street, Inverness 01463 663360The Filling StationThe Filling Station8‒10 Academy Street, Inverness 01463 663360

I tend to think of The Filling Station as a ‘family restaurant’ rather than a place for grown ups to go for a quiet meal, but au contraire. Though I went in the the early evening and the food on off er is quite family friendly the place was fairly peaceable and there was not a sticky surface in sight. I don’t mean for that to sound derogatory to restaurants that appeal to families, I just mean that sometimes I think those large family chains could do more to make their establishments more acceptable to the adults who are paying the bill (sorry, bad experience at a well known pizza joint recently).

Anyway, back to The Filling Station with it’s elevated position off the road, booth seating and proximity to the railway station giving it a slightly Brief Encounter feel (that could just be me though). The atmosphere is all well and good but the food has to live up to it, so it is time to dive in.

My starter was Loaded Potato Skins. A generous sized portion for one, the potatoes were creamy and the cheddar cheese fi lling had not been skimped. An excellent sour cream dip on the side was also a good sized amount and of nice thick consistency. My partners starter of Goats Cheese Bruschetta was the real star of the two though. Four pieces of crispy bruschetta, again I think that is a very decent sized portion. Each piece loaded with Goats cheese, a delicious nut pesto, tomato, red onion and all served on a fresh rocket salad. I know you can say it is a simple dish and therefore hard to get wrong, but you would be surprised at how many restaurants do just that. I was delighted to fi nd a complexity of fl avours, textures and ingredients in this dish. So we were off to a good, if slightly full start.

We didn’t need to worry about being full however as there was

quite a wait in between courses and by the time my main course arrived I was ravenous again. Mine was the Premium Veggie Burger and Straw Chips. This was a pretty impressive attempt to make the veggie burger look as exciting as its Aberdeen Angus counterpart. Firstly, this was no generic, meat substitute burger, nor was it mashed vegetables covered in breadcrumbs and shaped like a burger. It was a very tasty patty with red peppers, olives, sun-dried tomatoes and mozzarella, full of fl avour and with a great biting texture. It also came with the all the trimmings - mayonnaise, rocket, fresh tomato, red onion and dill pickle, etc... so the smallish burger was not dwarfed by the huge bun. I would say this was maybe the 2nd best veggie burger I’ve had in Inverness (the fi rst being 1st Pizza’s, which is hands-down the biggest and tastiest meat-like veggie burger from any 4343

I would say this was maybe the 2nd best veggie burger I’ve had in Inverness (the fi rst being 1st Pizza’s, which is hands-down the biggest and tastiest meat-like veggie burger from any 4343

town). On the side were some fairly standard, but fresh, skinny fries - if I get a choice I always choose fat fries though - also a red cabbage cream salad. I was expecting a spicy ketchup dip but the red cabbage was an added interest to the dish, so I was happy.

My partner’s main course was a rather marvellous New York Style Calzone (the old ‘inside out’ pizza). They do 4 diff erent fi llings, each more tempting than the next. He ordered the Californian and it arrived looking like a resplendent Cornish Pasty but was every bit the Italian/American classic. As promised it was stuff ed full of ingredients and the dough was soft with just enough bite to the outer shell. So no complaints from him, but I would have liked to see some salad with it.I feel I would not be doing the restaurant justice if I didn’t mention the extensive menu - all based on an American theme but does off er plenty of variety. Aside from the range of burgers and pizzas on off er, they also have a range of pasta dishes, fajitas, hot wraps and a tempting-sounding ‘Grills ‘n Thrills’ section with all the Ribeyes, Sirloins and Cajun or Piri Piri Chickens you could wish for.

What they don’t have however is a dessert menu. Don’t panic though, because they do serve a small, (and presumably ever changing?), selection of desserts which your server will be happy to relay to you. I chose the uninspired Chocolate Brownie, but it came with enough extras to give it a bit of pizzazz. The soft-rather-than-chewy brownie was covered in a chocolate sauce and sprinkled with chocolate covered honeycomb pieces, complimented by the honeycomb ice cream served on the side - a very nice touch - and the bowl of whipped cream did not go amiss either. So I felt justifi ed

in my slightly boring choice. My partner went for the more ‘out there’ Peanut Butter Cheesecake, also served with honeycomb ice cream and whipped cream, but he felt maybe a tad bit less rewarded than me. The cheesecake was just a little bland, tasting neither of peanut butter or anything much else. It was very creamy, but not very sweet, so certainly not to everyone’s taste.

The servers were a small but hard working, friendly, bunch and we were well looked after. I would describe the pace of service as leisurely rather than slow and I am aware that most diners like to take time over their meals, so I am not complaining.

They do a 2 course menu for £10.95 - available after 5pm Sun- Fri, which is good value - and you can add a dessert for just £3.

It certainly does what it says on the tin, as I was indeed full, but also pleasantly surprised. The Pleasantly Surprised Filling Station isn’t as catchy I suppose.

As early evening turned to night the lighting in the restaurant dimmed, giving it much more of a cosy, intimate ambiance and as I studied the fabulous cocktail menu on off er I could quite easily have settled in for a night of Sex on the Beach (it’s a cocktail people!)

Price for 2: £31.95 (exc. drinks)
