ENGINE PARTS
![Page 16: IC Engines Introduction](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022081720/552b203d4a7959b7588b45c0/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
Cylinder Block
• Basic frame of gasoline engine.
• Contains the cylinder.
![Page 17: IC Engines Introduction](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022081720/552b203d4a7959b7588b45c0/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
Piston
• A sliding plug that harnesses the force of the burning gases in the cylinder.
![Page 18: IC Engines Introduction](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022081720/552b203d4a7959b7588b45c0/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
Piston Rings
• The rings seal the compression gases above the piston keep the oil below the piston rings.
![Page 19: IC Engines Introduction](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022081720/552b203d4a7959b7588b45c0/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
Piston Pins
• Also known as the wrist pin/gudgeon pin, it connects the piston to the small end of the connecting rod.
• It transfers the force and allows the rod to swing back and forth.
![Page 20: IC Engines Introduction](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022081720/552b203d4a7959b7588b45c0/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
Connecting Rod
• Connects the piston and piston pin to the crankshaft.
![Page 21: IC Engines Introduction](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022081720/552b203d4a7959b7588b45c0/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
Crankshaft
• Along the piston pin and connecting rod it converts the up and down motion (reciprocating) of the engine to spinning (rotary) motion.
![Page 22: IC Engines Introduction](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022081720/552b203d4a7959b7588b45c0/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
Flywheel
• Carries the inertia when there is no power stroke.
![Page 23: IC Engines Introduction](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022081720/552b203d4a7959b7588b45c0/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
Cylinder Head
• Forms the top of the combustion chamber.• Contains the valves, the passageways for
the fuel mixture to move in and out of the engine.
![Page 24: IC Engines Introduction](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022081720/552b203d4a7959b7588b45c0/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
Intake and Exhaust Valves
• Doorway that lets the gases in and out of the engine.
![Page 25: IC Engines Introduction](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022081720/552b203d4a7959b7588b45c0/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
Camshaft
• Through the use of an eccentric the cam lobes push the valves open.
• The valve springs close them.
![Page 26: IC Engines Introduction](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022081720/552b203d4a7959b7588b45c0/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
Timing Gears
• These gears drive the camshaft from the crankshaft.
![Page 27: IC Engines Introduction](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022081720/552b203d4a7959b7588b45c0/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
Spark Plug
• Electric match used to begin the combustion process of burning air and gasoline to create heat.
