for hybrid cloud & cognitive solutions

Hybrid cloud is the platform on which cognitive solutions

are built

Data is the resource on which they all depend

IBM storage protects that data, delivering it when, where, and

how it’s needed with efficiency, agility and performance

Storage is the foundation

Interfacing cloud storage into an existing on-premises storage environment

• Preserves performance of local storage

• Preserves agility of deployment of cloud storage

• Preserves simplicity of configuration across many host types

• Uses existing SAN configuration skills

Almost 400 storage systems from IBM and others

• Full and incremental restore from cloud snapshots

• Supports volume groups for mutual consistency

• Import and export of volumes between systems

• Supported cloud providers: IBM Softlayer, Openstack Swift, Amazon S3

×

Backup

• Store copies of volume in cloud; restore to same or other volume

Archive

• Store copies of volume in cloud; delete original volume; restore volume if needed

Transfer

• Store copies of volume in cloud; connect another system to same cloud account; restore volume to new system

• Data is compressed before sending to cloud

• Connects to the cloud with secure (TLS) sockets ( using Authentication with certificates and

cloud account credentials)

• All data stored in the cloud is encrypted (Strong 256-bit AES-XTS encryption

• Audit log records all backup and restore operations

Flash Write Endurance Use !

Page 16: IBM Spectrum Storage

20

17

Flash Write Endurance Usage Rate

• In lsdrive records the rate of change of endurance.

Internally, this will be stored as a rate (days per 1% increase of DWPD), externally, this

will be displayed as a “traffic light”

Measuring: No rate information available

High: Drives will not last expected ~4.5 years

Marginal: Drives will last ~4.5-5.5 years

Low: Drives will last ~5.5 years or more

• Drives will indicate "measuring" for shorter of 8% of their life or 6 months, whichever is

shorter

• Endurance is based on the last 8% of its life

– System will take months to respond to drive load reduction

Real-time Compression: Note Real-time Compression (RtC) is supported only on the model V5030

The optional 16GB memory upgrade on each node canister is required

When the first compressed volume is created 4 of the 6 CPU cores are allocated to RtC• Of the 32GB of memory on each node canister roughly 9-10GB is allocated to RtC

The faster CPU with more cores, the extra memory and the Hyper-threading capability of the V5030 as well as improvements to RtC software results in good performance for smaller customer configurations common to the market segment this product is intended to serve

There are no hardware compression accelerators as in the V7000 Gen2• The actual LZ4 compression is done by the CPUs as was the case with the V7000 Gen1

GDPR and IBM System

Encryption of processed personal data, which calls for media-level encryption of

data at rest, besides application-level encryption

Controlled data placement and tracking of physical copies in a central inventory,

or copy data management

The main two aspects directly touch storage systems and data management software in

helping GDPR process:

For both aspects, IBM offers infrastructure/software solutions and

assistance in assessing process compliance.

Improved security with support to encryption key management software that complies with Key Management Interoperability Protocol (KMIP) standards, such as IBM Security Key Lifecycle Manager (SKLM) to help centralize, simplify, and automate the encryption key management process to help minimize risk and reduce operational costs.

Encryption for Spectrum Virtualize

Improves data security with software and hardware based encryption. It enables encryption of virtualized external storages non-encryption capable!Spectrum Virtualize takes care of applying encryption after otherwise useless data reduction measures like real-time compression.

Controlled Copies – IBM Copy Data Management

IBM Spectrum Copy Data Management offers a three-fold risk protection in the cloning/snapshot examples cited above:

Allowing application operators to trigger select cloning workflows without any access to the storage layer

Retaining an auditable history of copies that have been generated including their revocation or deletion date

Forbidding copy workflows that do not incorporate data masking for pseudonymization, (e.g. in Oracle or SAP database cloning for development testing)

Furthermore Copy Data Management provides ways to track all copies (including DR copies) that might require GPDR-compliant irrecoverable deletion for the "right to erasure". Copy Data Management combined with automatic data placement also regulates the storage selection for sensitive data copies by providing only appropriate workflows.
