OPTIMIZING VIRTUAL ENVIRONMENTS
Axibase Enterprise Reporter for IBM Power™ Systems (pSystems) provides a
comprehensive solution for managing performance in pSystems environments
supporting enterprise-scale applications such as DB2, SAP, Oracle DB, Oracle
Applications, and J2EE servers.
By correlating historical utilization with detailed configuration data at the
PowerVM™ hypervisor layer and analyzing contentions across shared CPU,
memory, storage, network resources, AER recommends optimized
entitlements for each logical partition based on its business priority.
ENTERPRISE CAPACITY SUMMARY
BENEFITS
AER delivers a proven foundation for minimizing performance bottlenecks
in Tier-1 applications while increasing server consolidation ratio (LPARs
per allocated CPU) by up to 30% and frame utilization to 60-70%.
Continuously right-sizes the virtual infrastructure by reclaiming capacity
from over-allocated partitions toward expanding production workloads.
For customers with hundreds of LPARs, AER automates capacity planning
process that previously required allocation of highly-trained resources.
AER is deployed in production in some of the world's largest AIX
environments and is validated by IBM for ITM integration since 2008.

CONTINOUS INFRASTRUCTURE RIGHT-SIZING AER continuously analyzes large volumes of historical data to
recommend optimal settings for each partition based on
priority of hosted applications.
As a result, the frames are always balanced avoiding costly
upgrades for as long as capacity can be re-allocated internally
without any impact on application response times.
Customers can establish capacity buffers (e.g. extra 25% for
production LPARs) to ensure sufficient lead time for expansion.
STATISTICAL APPROACH TO CAPACITY PLANNING AER utilizes a concept of LPAR application profile for capacity
planning. Each profile encapsulates a set of rules for computing
optimal CPU entitlement and virtual CPU count based on
historical CPU utilization.
For example, an 'SAP Production' profile can compute the right
settings for particular SIDs in the SAP environment so that
these LPARs have guaranteed CPU to process 75% of peaks and
enough vCPUs to process 100% of peaks during business hours.
By leveraging statistics, production profiles minimize
unnecessary over-allocation whereas development profiles
prevent workload 'starvation'.
Further tuning is possible by targeting profiles at particular
days of week and peak/off-peak business hours.
Ability to exclude partitions from optimization analysis in order
to meet sizing requirements established by application vendors.
Profiles can be assigned to multiple LPARs or entire frames to
minimize ongoing configuration efforts.
FORECASTS AND TRENDING Weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly capacity forecasts at the
frame, LPAR, WPAR and files system level.
Ability to filter forecasts by application such as SAP SID or by
environment: Production, Staging, Development.
AXIBASE ENTERPRISE REPORTER
VIO SERVER INTROSPECTION Discovers detailed VIO server configuration: virtual ethernet
adapters, shared ethernet adapters, etherchannels, physical
adapters, default and additional VLAN IDs.
Maps LPAR network interfaces to VIO adapters using VLAN IDs
and identifies top-5 partitions by traffic for each adapter.
Correlates sent/received statistics between VIOS and LPARs.
E-TOPAS (ENTERPRISE TOPAS) Cross-frame visualization of LPAR utilization statistics in near
real-time without overhead of polling individual LPARs.
Scales to 1000s of LPARs at up to 15 second polling interval.
Allows pSystems administrators to instantly identify top-N
over-utilized partitions across the entire IT landscape.
MULTI-PARTITION ROLL-UPS Reports resource utilization for LPARs supporting a particular
application or for a user-defined subset of LPARs, even if the
LPARs are hosted on different frames.
Computes rolled up averages, maximums, minimums, and totals
for LPAR subsets. Supports expressions to filter LPARs
dynamically.
PRE-DEFINED REMOTE COMMANDS Allows end-users to lookup detailed configuration information
for each LPAR using pre-defined remote commands such as
prtconf or lparstat –i.
The list of commands can be extended by administrators and
can be disabled in locked-down environments.
Doesn't require direct connectivity to LPARs. Commands are
routed and executed using ITM servers.
AXIBASE ENTERPRISE REPORTER
WPAR DRILL-DOWN Continuously scans system- and user-defined workload
partitions (WPARs) while analyzing WPAR resource
consumption within each LPAR.
Identifies top-3 WPAR consumers in each LPAR and computes
their resource utilization shares.
CEC & ITM RUNTIME AUDIT Identifies 'grey' capacity to ensure complete performance
monitoring coverage:
- Running partitions that are not monitored by CEC.
- Running partitions without an ITM OS agents.
- Running partition with an offline ITM OS agent.
CONSOLIDATION ACROSS MULTIPLE ENVIRONMENTS Provides enterprise-level rollup of pSystems capacity and
utilizations across multiple environments managed by isolated
ITM installations.
Ability to drill-down from the Enterprise Level into production,
staging, and development frames within the same interface.
