IB LEARNER PROFILE OF THE MONTH: RISK TAKERS As Term 2 is now well underway, and a new month is upon us, it is time to roll out our new Learner Profile of the month. The month of February will be focused on the trait of being a ‘Risk Taker’. IB defines the trait as students, ‘approaching unfamiliar situations and uncertainty with courage and forethought, and having the independence of spirit to explore new roles, ideas and strategies. They are brave and articulate in defending their beliefs.’ As students begin to develop and embrace being a risk taker, they not only succeed as students, athletes, and peers, but also transition well to challenging university settings and show resilience and determination in their work. In academics, they have the confidence to approach new or unfamiliar subjects or material. As risk takers, BIS wants to continue to see our students o Be willing to make mistakes o Be confident when learning new ideas and skills o Have the courage to try new things o Explore the unexplored This trait particularly suits the month of February, as BIS’ annual Science Fair will be hosted on the 22 nd of this month. Our students will be using scientific methods to investigate and explore the unknown, willing to make mistakes to learn and deepen their understanding. This willingness to experiment and confidence to explore the uncertain, demonstrates the value of being a risk-taker. MYP1 have produced this poster to illustrate what it means to them to be a risk-taker. We look forward to seeing our students continue to be courageous learners, willing to take risks to deepen their understanding of the world around them. IB LEARNER PROFILE OF THE MONTH: RISK TAKERS

As Term 2 is now well underway, and a new month is upon us, it is time to roll out our new Learner Profile of the month.

The month of February will be focused on the trait of being a ‘Risk Taker’. IB defines the trait as students, ‘approaching

unfamiliar situations and uncertainty with courage and forethought, and having the independence of spirit to explore

new roles, ideas and strategies. They are brave and articulate in defending their beliefs.’

As students begin to develop and embrace being a risk taker, they not only succeed as students, athletes, and peers, but

also transition well to challenging university settings and show resilience and determination in their work. In academics,

they have the confidence to approach new or unfamiliar subjects or material.

As risk takers, BIS wants to continue to see our students

o Be willing to make mistakes

o Be confident when learning new ideas and skills

o Have the courage to try new things

o Explore the unexplored

This trait particularly suits the month of February, as BIS’ annual Science Fair will be hosted on the 22nd of this month.

Our students will be using scientific

methods to investigate and explore

the unknown, willing to make

mistakes to learn and deepen their

understanding. This willingness to

experiment and confidence to explore

the uncertain, demonstrates the value

of being a risk-taker. MYP1 have

produced this poster to illustrate what

it means to them to be a risk-taker.

We look forward to seeing our

students continue to be courageous

learners, willing to take risks to

deepen their understanding of the

world around them.

WINTER CLOTHING DONATIONS

On Tuesday, 30 January, six volunteers and two staff

members visited the Belovodsk Village Orphanage for

children aged between 4-16 with neuropsychiatric

disorders. The purpose of this visit was to deliver the

clothes collected during the Winter Donation Drive.

After an hour's drive, we were greeted with a warm

welcome from the director of the orphanage. She was so

kind to take us on a tour of their impressive facilities and

to meet with some of the children at the orphanage in

their classes. Our learners were also impressed with the

level of care given to the orphanage's 230 children and

the size of the orphanage.

We were also quite moved to see that the children have a wide variety of activities to keep themselves busy and that all

the learners are attended to in equal amounts.

I would like to personally thank all the volunteers as well as the parents and students at ESCA for all their donations that

made this day possible.

Mr. Jacques, Houses Coordinator

RUBE GOLDBERG MACHINE

Primary 6 has been studying Physics during our Unit of Inquiry. Last week, the whole class worked together to solve a

problem. Their task was to turn off a light, using many simple machines and small parts. Students followed all steps of

the Scientific process - asking questions, making predictions, testing, recording information in their science journal, and

rebuilding again and again - until they found success. The finished project was a 10 step complex Rube Goldberg

Machine and it worked! Click here to see a video of their machine in action!

PRESCHOOL 1

This week in preschool 1 was devoted to the theme of

community helpers. We learned that firefighters rescue people,

spray the flames, have fire trucks, red uniforms and hoses for

water. We also practiced the “Stop, Drop, Roll” fire safety

technique to be aware how to minimize injury if our clothes catch

fire. To understand better how to stop the fire, we had fire

sensory play; we squirted a toy building with some shaving cream,

further, added yellow and red paint to make it look like flames.

Finally, we pretended to be firefighters and put out the flames

with water. That allowed us to reinforce our new firefighter

vocabulary. We also learned about the job of a doctor. We visited

our school doctor, Asel, who showed us how to take care of sick

people.

PRESCHOOL 2

This week preschool 2 started a new theme, “How we

organize ourselves”. The central idea is “Food is a basic

necessity that sustains people everywhere.” The

children learned about veggies and fruits, and now they

can sort them by groups. We learned that vegetables

and fruits provide us with many vitamins and minerals

that make us grow, be strong and healthy.

PRESCHOOL 3

This week our preschool 3 students had a great time. The friends learned about

the letter 'u'. We learned that the letter 'u' is for unique, upside down,

umbrella and under. We enjoyed listening to "upside down silly Sally" and

playing a game named "silly Sally says". The preschool friends also learned how

to do a dot to dot number activity. Next week, we will learn about the letter "l"

and continue learning how to do dot to dot number activities. We will also look

at stories and telling stories using story puppets and shadow puppets.
