I’ve wanted to farm since I was 12 years old.

Few people can say that they go to work every day with their best friend, but Warren McCutcheon can. Warren farms with his father, Shawn, near Homewood, Manitoba. He and his wife, Meghan, raise their daughter, Charlotte, on the same land that his grandfather started farming when he came back from World War 2. “I’ve wanted to farm since I was 12 years old,” Warren says with a smile. After playing professional hockey and then attending the University of Manitoba, Warren found his way back to the farm in 2006. After tough growing conditions in 2004 and 2005, Warren’s professors didn’t want to talk about his management plan; they only wanted to talk about why on earth he still wanted to be a farmer. It’s those early days that clearly fostered Warren’s farming philosophy of trying to get the most out of every acre on the farm.

The McCutcheon farm grows soybeans for seed production, edible beans, corn and other crops. Corn is a long-standing crop, as Shawn started growing corn in the 1970s. When it comes to choosing a corn hybrid today, the McCutcheons make decisions with a close eye on corn trial plots. “Ideally, we should have 3 or 4 of the strip trials across the farm,” explains Warren. The McCutcheons have put in Market Development trials with DEKALB® going on 10 years, evaluating the newest DEKALB® corn hybrids against the leading competitive products.

Candidly, Warren looks back and says 10 years ago the DEKALB® corn genetics were not meeting his expectations but now he thinks DEKALB® has the best corn hybrid for his farm. Warren says that DKB33-78RIB is a “game changer” on their farm. They got a taste of it in plots in 2015 and his only regret is that they didn’t grow more last year. The 2016 corn trial was even more convincing;

“After major winds in June and July, some of the hybrids had been sawed off just above the cob,” recalls Warren. Last year, he saw that DKC33-78RIB withstood the wind and other stress and still delivered high yields.

“I can’t risk growing something that can get damaged,” Warren explained.

Warren is eager to see what DKC33-78RIB can do this year. He’s also optimistic about future corn genetics from DEKALB® as Monsanto continues to focus on early corn breeding for Western Canada. He’s asking for a new 80-day corn hybrid with all the attributes that he needs to keep helping him get the very most out of their land. Challenge accepted!

We thank the McCutcheon family for choosing DEKALB® brand seed for their farm and wish them a safe and successful harvest this year and for many generations to come. Check out the results of the McCutcheon corn trial and other farmer-managed Market Development trials on DEKALB.ca this fall.
