Latin Engagement Action GroupMission To propose a set of activities that IASSIST could undertake to further engage with data professionals from Ibero-american institutions

ScopeResearch data services (Social Sciences but not exclusively so) in academic environments including those involved in:

● developing data management tools ● research data support and training, data management policy● developing technical solutions such as data analysis and visualisation tools● research data repositories ingesting,or planning to ingest, research data

Members Luis Martinez & Stuart Macdonald, chairs Melanie Wright, sheperd

Methodology

● Wiki for collaboration and dissemination [http://tinyurl.com/iassistLatin]

● Phase I: Spain ● Survey as an online questionnaire

○ 13 responses○ Indicative of difficulty to reach people

● Desk research (navigating institutional websites, annual reports, mailing lists)

● Telephone interviews with a script

Page 7: IASSIST Latin Engagement Strategic Action Group

● Traditional data library role○ secondary data collections○ support and reference services

● Data management and curation○ status of research data management strategies from

an institutional perspective

● IASSIST○ awareness of the organization○ role of IASSIST○ what can IASSIST do for you?

Three main areas of interest

Traditional data library

● Only one 'traditional' data library● Data library role not seen as prominant ● Our evidence suggests that Social Science Libraries purchase

macro-indicator databases. Few purchase other types of materials such as microdata (only 2 members of ICPSR) or GIS data.

● Libraries provide training courses and support for the 'databases' they subscribe - this may include the macro-economic and social indicator-based resources.

● Not much data cataloguing!

Research data management

● Growing area of interest amongst the repository community"The Spanish Ministry of Science and Education is extremely keen to promote data sharing and is interested in exploring how IRs can assist in this process.”

● Some institutions have started to data deposit in IRs"The profile of researchers depositing data appears to be technically proficient early career scholars, and those that have been abroad and seen others sharing data.”

● Other institutions are conducting scoping and requirements gathering exercises

" interested in approaching the issue in collaborative ways …working with a close and small community in the first place capturing researcher requirements and building a prototype”

● New skills needed " there needs to be close relationships with research teams (from a repository or IT support perspective)

● Unclear where responsibilities lie in terms of providing research data management skills.

Role of IASSIST

● Half of respondents knew of IASSIST● Perceived benefits that IASSIST can offer (from respondents)

○ Background information about social science data libraries and data support ○ Basic skills to handle social science data ○ Free Social Science data resources○ Tools to assist data analysis and visualisation ○ Tools to help manage and share datasets produced by your academics○ To provide a peer to peer support network○ Access to IASSIST online facilities○ Help to raise awareness about RDM issues○ Help to not-reinvent the wheel providing guidance in RDM

Page 14: IASSIST Latin Engagement Strategic Action Group

Recommendations (1st Phase)● Multilingual key web pages● Training/Awareness raising events in Spain● Bring Ibero-american colleagues to IASSIST annual

conference via outreach committee● Continue with latin sessions in conferences● RSP for data management● Host IASSIST conference in Spain● Conduct a phase 2 exercise with institutions from Portugal

/ Latin America

Page 15: IASSIST Latin Engagement Strategic Action Group

Next steps● Conduct similar exercises in

■ Portugal■ Latin-america

● DATAIRED bid for an ibero-american network for RDM with partners from:

○ Argentina (UNR)○ Brasil (UPM)○ Chile (REUNA, UACH)○ Colombia (EAFIT, UR)○ Costa Rica (LANOTEC)○ Ecuador (FLACSO, UASB)○ Mexico (UASLP, UDALP)○ Perú (UNMSM)○ Portugal (UM)○ Spain (UNED)○ Venezuela (CECALCULA, UCV)○ CLARA, CLACSO
