State of the Islamic Association of Raleigh AssalamuAlikum Brothers and Sisters:

The Constitution of the Islamic Association of Raleigh (IAR) requires that the General Body (GB) meeting shall be called at

least once a year to report to the community the status of IAR. I would like to welcome you to the 2015 GB Meeting.

I would like to recognize the members of the Board of Directors as chaired by Dr. Wahaj. I also would like to recognize our

newly elected Vice Chairman Br. Hassan Imam and our Secretary Sr. Tanzeel. I welcome all the members of the Shura as

well as the Chairpersons of our Standing Committees.

It is with your generous support, dedication and commitment we continue to grow and to achieve better results. So I ask you

to, please, continue your participation and to increase your support for a better IAR Inshaa Allah. I pray that Allah (SWT)

reward you and all the volunteers in abundance for your dedication and generosity.

I would like to report to you that in 2015 we have received a Total IAR Revenue of $ 4,431,059 and total Expenditures was

$4,866,538 with a deficit of $434,479. WE had general revenue of $1,260,366 in addition to the a total of $2,371,778 as a

school’s revenue. The Kitchen revenue totaled $ 361,183 and the Library $23,642. We have distributed $202,625 to needy

families and $110,292 for disaster relief through the Social and Welfare committee chaired by Br. Munir Abdallah.

$338,813 from the Kitchen. The deficit mainly was because of two main items: the Playground (about $280,000) and a loan

payment towards the International Drive property about $220,000). WE have just concluded an audit and the auditor’s report

will become available soon and it indicates that our accounts are in order.

Last year was a challenge and blessing for all of us and it was essential to stabilize our organization. Alhamdulillah, we now

have Dr. Mohamed AbuTaleb as our Imam and Br. Muamar Dahnoun as our Assistant Imam. IAR also hired a funeral

director. We have an excellent playground for our children and families, updated the landscape and the outside view of the

Center, and installed LED lighting system, built a new fence around the campus. The Management Committee lead by Br.

Amin Asfari is doing a good work and for this I thank them. IAR is pleased to announce that we have purchased a hearse for

the cemetery and the Cemetery Committee lead by Br, Taher AbuHawa continues providing a good and prompt services to

our deceased and their families.

The Imam’s office provides more counseling, new educational and religious programs like living Islam, Quranic Arabic and

Tarbiya classes for all people of different ages. Live streaming of Fridays Khutba and other programs are now offered and

good presence in the social media (Facebook, Twitter and YouTube)

IAR is and was active in fighting Islamophobia with the support of Interfaith groups. Our provided services are getting

better, but we still have a lot to accomplish. We are moving towards a better and structured organization Inshaa Allah.

Al-Iman School, An-Noor School and Al-Furqan School are doing well, and to continue providing the best of education to

our students.

We currently planning to utilize our three properties in International Drive, Page Road and Mid Pine Road for both

investment and development. So I would like to thank the Planning and Construction Committee chaired by Br. Abdul Sadat

Page 4: IAR Annual Progress Report for the year 2015

and Br, Khawar for chairing the TMC team for doing necessary work to guide and incorporate our vision and for best

utilization of the properties.

Our priorities continue to be on the Youth and on the Islamic Education. So we have added new programs for the youth, as

well as a monthly program with guest scholars for the community and the schools.

Our facilities are safe and being secured by a good Safety and Security Team chaired by Br, Rashid Salahat. We keep

providing necessary funds to ensure that our students, teachers, youth and worshippers are secure and safe.

In conclusion, I again encourage you all to come forward, get involved in various committees that offer services to us all and

all members of our Muslim Community. With our unity, with our honesty and sincerity to Allah (SWT) we, together, can

maintain and develop IAR and build the future for our and future generations Inshaa Allah

Al-Furqan School Committee

(Chairperson, Shameem Rajak) The Al Furqan Sunday School strives to provide a well-rounded and thorough Islamic education and environment

for the children of the Muslim community. Our core curriculum is based on Quran and Islamic Studies consisting

of Islamic History, Fiqh, Seerah and so on. The following are highlights from the 2015 - 2016 academic year:

• Salah Program: Al-Furqan emphasizes the importance of Salah to 3rd grade students. These students are

introduced to the concept of Salah, the role of Salah in our lives as Muslims and then spend the year learning how

to correctly perform wudu and Salah. At the end of the year, the 3rd grade class performs a Salah demonstration

for parents, signifying their ability to correctly perform this act of worship.

• Quran Recitation Program (QRP): Al Furqan begins a focused study on learning how to read and recite the

Holy Quran in Kindergarten and continues until 5th grade. This program includes learning the alphabet and the

correct rules of reading (with an emphasis on Tajweed), and proper recitation. Our teaching staff works with

students to help them further their Quran- reading skills. The goal of this program is to ensure that by the end of

fifth grade, students are able to recite the Quran with proper tajweed. Parents are expected to work with their

children continuously in order to solidify this skill set for life.

Hajj Presentation: The High school staff, volunteers, and students work together to prepare a demonstration on

how to perform Hajj. Students from other grades are invited to watch the procedures involved in performing Hajj.

It is indeed a unique experience for the students.

Page 15: IAR Annual Progress Report for the year 2015

General Body meeting 06-19-2015 14 Islamic Association of Raleigh

• Parent Teacher Conferences: Al Furqan hosts an annual parent -.teacher conference for all grades at the end

of the Fall semester. This facilitates communication of student progress between the staff and the parents. The

parent turn-out is generally high. This is a strong indication of the increasing participation of the parent

community in our school each year.

• Security: We have hired three security guards to make sure everyone coming to Al-Furqan School is safe and

secure during the day in school and during break time. Security for everyone is our priority especially all our

students from KG to 12th Grade.

• Student Discipline and Attendance System: We have improved policies regarding classroom discipline,

behavior, and attendance. Attendance data is being tracked and absences and tardies are being followed up with

parents. We have introduced a reward system for perfect attendance with no tardies, given out per semester.

• Imam’s Program: This program focuses on Middle and High School students. Imam Abu Taleb has conducted

classes with our students twice a month. He also has a class with Al-Furqan parents twice a month.

• Teachers and Training Program: Experienced trainers assist the teachers with strategies for effective teaching

and classroom management. This helps to improve the quality of education offered to our students and to equip

our staff with full understanding of topics covered in our curriculum. Al-Furqan teacher selection is based on the

individual’s Islamic knowledge background and professional skills, as far as possible.

• External Speakers: External speakers like Sheik Okasha have been invited to present talks on important topics

for our middle and high school students.

Cemetery and Burial Committee

(Chairman, Tahir Abu-Hawa)

The Cemetery Committee plays a critical role in planning and carrying out meaningful funeral services for

the community, and support the families we are privileged to serve. Since 2015, we have become for the first

time in the history of IAR a self-sustained funeral facility: by arranging body removals, obtaining required

legal documents, preparing loved ones for viewing, arranging for final disposition, and transporting the

deceased to the cemetery.

- Last year there were more than 27 deaths in our community.

- Conducted funeral workshops for community education.

- communicated with The State Medical Examiner's office, and other hospitals.

- Communicated with the Wake county vital records in a regular basis.

- Hired a funeral coordinator (in the process of taking classes to become a licensed funeral director)

- Teamed up with other funeral homes for the purpose of apprenticeship, continuous improvement

and professional development.

- Obtained our own transport permit from The NC Board of Funeral Service.

- Purchased a hearse.

- Planned building of a multipurpose hall and a bathroom in the cemetery to accommodate the needs

of visitors.

- Concrete surfaced most of the graves in both burial sections.

Planning and Construction Committee

(Chairman, Abdul Ahad Sadat)

The Planning and Construction Committee started, completed and continues work on several projects.

The P&CC teamed up with Management Committee and Al-Iman school Committee and established

the new playground.

The P&CC started and completed retaining wall and draining improvement for playground area. The

drainage improvement in the parking area still needs some minor modifications to be done.

The P&CC teamed up with IAR appointed Ad Hoc Committee to establish a Musallah on the Page

Road Property for the purpose of tax exemption; however, the P&CC cannot approve the current

developed plans. The current plan is not part of the master plan and the expected cost is too high to

justify the tax exemption purpose, which was the sole reason for establishing a Musallah; therefore, it

Page 25: IAR Annual Progress Report for the year 2015

General Body meeting 06-19-2015 24 Islamic Association of Raleigh

will be a total waste of funds. The P&CC is proposing alternative plans to be presented to Shura and

the Shura will make the final decision.

The P&CC planned and executed renovation tasks for Al-Iman School such as addition of a

bathroom, removing and replacing of fire-escape staircases in the red brick building and addition of

partitions in the computer labs in both buildings.
